The first level recreates a late 19th-century general store. The building s second story contains collections of medical equipment, tools and furnishings
http://www.shelburnemuseum.org/htm/museum/buildings_collections/buildings/genera
The General Store was constructed in 1840 in nearby Shelburne Center, where it served as the village post office for years. Its primary Greek Revival feature is its front-gable orientation, emphasized by a multi-paned triangular window above the second story.
In 1952, the building was moved intact to the Museum on a specially laid railroad track. The first level re-creates a late 19th-century general store. Fully stocked shelves display the variety of goods formerly available for purchase, while smaller adjoining rooms offer a variety of community services. These include a post office, barber shop and a tap room. A 19th-century apothecary shop is housed in a wing added to the building after it was moved to the Museum grounds.
The building's second story contains collections of medical equipment, tools and furnishings spanning the first half of the 20th-century. Re-created settings include a dentist's laboratory and examining room and the offices of an eye, ear, nose and throat physician.

James Hardie Library of Australian Fine Arts
Special Visual Arts Collections As well as the general collection of visual arts materials, the Library houses two special Visual Arts collections, devoted to particular themes in the visual arts including: The James Hardie Library of Australian Fine Arts was donated by James Hardie Industries Limited to the State Library as a Bicentennial gift to the nation in 1988. Valued at $3 million at the time, it was one of the most significant gifts ever made to an Australian library. The material was originally from the private collection of Mr Patrick Corrigan, an association which has continued, with Mr Corrigan donating material valued at more than $2.3 million to the Hardie and Lindsay Collections since 1988. Together with donations from many other sources, and resources dedicated by the State Library, the collection has doubled in size and value, making it the finest collection of its type in the world.
The Collection
The core of the James Hardie Library is its collection of over 12,000 titles including a breathtaking array of first editions and foundation firsts in Australian art publishing, such as the first Australian art book on an Australian artist with colour plates, the first Australian art magazine, and the first book on an Australian photographer. It also holds limited and deluxe editions of illustrated art books, and archival and manuscript material relating to the visual arts.

Searching Tips
General
  • Type a word or phrase in one or more of the search boxes.
  • Use a slash (/) between words if you want either word to be present.
  • Use an asterisk (*) to truncate your search terms (e.g. swim* will retrieve swimming and swimmers). Note: many of the descriptive search terms are entered as plurals (airplanes, buildings, churches, hats, stores, streets, theaters).
  • A space can serve as a substitute for a comma or a period (e.g. Bromley Edward is the same as Bromley, Edward).
  • When searching names, use "Lastname, Firstname" or "Lastname Firstname" format.
  • Use the abbreviations for streets (St) and avenues (Ave); i.e. 3rd St, 24th Ave, Portland Ave. Usually directions of the street aren't critical to the search.
  • Capitalization will not affect the results of the search.
  • Follow this link for examples of Year/Decade formats.
By Keyword
A keyword query searches all fields in the record. Enter one or more words or a phrase. Examples of keyword searches:
  • Ames Ames A A Automobiles Basilica 4th St 7th Ave Hennepin Ave Hennepin Avenue Bridge Orpheum Streetcars
Note: When searching for streets and avenues, and use the ordinal number for the numbered streets and avenues (e.g. 2nd, 3rd, 10th), and use the abreviations of St or Ave unless it is a formal name for a structure (e.g. Hennepin Avenue Bridge).

... Conducting Research Research Library Overview The Research Library at the Getty Research Institute focuses on the history of art, architecture, and archaeology with relevant materials in the humanities and social sciences. The range of the collections begins with prehistory and extends to contemporary art. Presently, the collections are strongest in the history of western European art and culture in Europe and North America; however, in recent years, they have expanded to include other areas, such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, and selected regions of Asia. The general library collections (secondary sources) include more than 800,000 volumes of books, periodicals, and auction catalogs. The literature of art history, the methods and materials of artistic production, and conservation are core areas of the holdings in classical antiquities, medieval and Renaissance art, sculpture and the decorative arts, prints and drawings, and photography. The special collections contain rare books, prints, maps, photographs, optical devices, manuscripts, and archival collections. The thematic collecting priorities for primary research materials are Historiography of Art, Architecture, and Archaeology; The Modern Period; The History of Collecting and Display; and Visual Sources. Primarily works on paper, these collections include artists' journals, letters, sketchbooks, and teaching materials, architectural drawings, artistic biographies and treatises, early guidebooks and travel literature, emblem books, festival books and prints, reproductive prints, and the archives of art dealers and galleries.
