The Austin History Center's Photograph Collection contains over one million images, ranging in date from the mid-19th century to the present. These images illustrate the changes in the people, events, and natural and built environment that Austin has seen over the past century and a half. Word has traveled, and our photos are used by researchers, educators, authors, artists, journalists, and of course, by those who simply want to enjoy looking at an Austin scene from the past. A number of photos from the History Center's collection have been published in books or videotaped for broadcast in newscasts or documentaries. Exhibits produced by the Austin History Center and by other institutions use photos from the History Center's collection. Photographic reprints of our images are available at a very reasonable cost. General Photo Collection

Biography File . The Austin File Biography (AF Biography) photographs contain images of citizens of Austin who have made an impact on their community and are arranged by the names of the individuals or the name of their family.
House Building File . This photograph file has images of structures located around the city, although the heaviest concentration of photos documents the central part of town. These photos are arranged by street address.

A Perspective on Accessibility in Museums
By Anthony G. Hirschel, Director and CEO, Indianapolis Museum of Art
The Indianapolis Museum of Art is engaged in a substantial expansion and renovation project that will increase its gallery space by 50 percent, significantly enhance the quality and scale of visitor amenities, and expand the range of offerings it provides on its spacious and handsomely landscaped 152-acre campus. In many ways, this is not unusual for museums in the last few years, as many of them chose to pursue ambitious plans for expansion. One feature that distinguishes the effort in Indianapolis is the stated commitment to accessibility. This concept was articulated in the strategic plan, completed in 1996, that underlies the planning for the expanded facility. That concept remained uppermost when I joined the IMA staff two years ago, and continued to be cited when major construction began in mid-2002. But what did we mean by accessibility? How did it shape our thinking, and how has it affected our plans? more...

The Peter Reddaway Collection
I n May 2001 the Andrei Sakharov Archives received from Professor Peter Reddaway a gift of his photographic collection. Professor Reddaway holds BA and MS degrees from Cambridge University and did graduate work at Harvard University and the London School of Economics and Political Science. He received his Ph.D. in Soviet Politics at the London School. Before joining the George Washington University (Washington, DC) in January 1989, he taught at the London School (1965-1986) and directed the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies (1986-1889). At the GWU Professor Reddaway chairs the Committee of the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies and is on the Editorial Board of the Institute's journal Problems of Post-Communism. He teaches courses on Soviet and post-Soviet government and politics, on Russian regional politics and government, and on human rights, and a multi-disciplinary introduction to Russia and Eastern Europe.
P rofessor Reddaway is, perhaps, the first Western scholar to treat and study the early documents of Soviet human rights movement as precious historic material. He is one of those scholars who recognized both the historic value and historic perspective of the scarce information related to moral and political challenge posed to the regimes by human rights movements in Eastern Europe and the USSR. Professor Reddaway published extensively on these subjects:
