Kimball Prince, Sandia's General Attorney from 1955 to 1959.
We received a new collection from retiree Arthur McMullen, who now resides in Durango, CO. He was a Sandia employee for 30 years, retiring in 1980. The collection includes materials on McMullen's work in antenna development; he worked on many projects including telemetry antennas for the Redstone and the Honest John rockets. During the Readiness Program in the 1960s, McMullen was responsible for the many antenna systems required for data acquisition in Sandia's C135 aircraft. In another project, McMullen helped design a microwave system that successfully linked a classroom serving Sandia California and Lawrence Livermore with the University of California Davis. This Educational Television System allowed many of the Labs' employees to earn graduate degrees.
Art McMullen checks out an antenna set-up at Barber's Point, Hawaii (circa 1964). Retiree Robert O. Woods donated two models-a Strypi rocket (an egret illustration decorating its nose) and a Nike missile. We plan to use these models in a future exhibit. Woods retired in 1997 with over 30 years of service. During his career at Sandia, Woods designed instruments for upper air research, fielded air pollution experiments, designed optical and mechanical instrumentation for military satellites, designed X-Ray instrumentation for satellite astronomy, and designed robotic high-precision tooling for production.

General Motors FM-2 "Wildcat" fighters
In 1942, automobile manufacturer General Motors converted several of its east coast factories to aircraft production under the name Eastern Aircraft Division. Eastern received contracts to build F4F-4 "Wildcat" fighters and TBF-1 "Avenger" torpedo planes, allowing Grumman to gradually reconcentrate its energies on the new, urgently-needed F6F "Hellcat" fighter. The GM F4F-4s, redesignated FM-1s, had only four .50 caliber machine guns, but were otherwise little changed from the original model. Well over a thousand FM-1 fighters were delivered in 1942-43, including some three hundred for the British Royal Navy. Meanwhile, Grumman had prototyped a new "Wildcat" under the designation XF4F-8, which was to be produced by Eastern Aircraft as the FM-2. With lightened structure and a more powerful Wright R-1820 radial engine, the FM-2 was notably quicker, faster climbing, longer ranged and more maneuverable than its predecessor. To help control the increased power, the new plane had a distinctive, taller vertical tail. All-in-all, it was a great improvement, and more than four thousand FM-2s were built in 1943-45. Of those, over three hundred went to the British.

The Colonnade Photo Collection 1991-1997
Abstract
Note on Arrangement
The photographs in The Colonnade Photo Collection were, for the most part, unorganized when they arrived in the University Archives. The photographs from February 1991 to May 1992, and from January 1995 to May 1996 were organized by the date the Colonnade published them. There were piles of photographs, however, that were unorganized, unlabeled, and apparently unpublished. In order to create some order, the processing archivist arranged the 1991-1992 and 1995-1997? unorganized photographs into the following groups: Activities, General; Fraternities; People; Places; Sports; Student Activities; and Things. The basic arrangement of the collection as is follows: BSA 1991?

1993-1994 Issue Photographs People Places Sports Student Activities Things 1995-1996 Colonnade Issue Photographs
While the photographs span from 1991 to 1997, the most consistent set of photographs are found from February 1991 to May 1992 and January 1995 to May 1996. There are scattered photographs from issues in 1993 and 1994 and only a few from 1997. Many of the photographs have corresponding negatives and the later sets of photographs have some corresponding paperwork which may provide additional information to researchers.
