A Piper PA-30 Twin Commanche, known as NASA 808, was used at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center as a rugged workhorse in a variety of research projects associated with both general aviation and military projects. DFRC Photo # Photo Date Image Description PA-30 Twin Comanche Photo Collection Contact Sheet ECN-2845 PA-30 Twin Comanche - NASA 808 in flight E-37135 PA-30 Twin Comanche - NASA 808 in hangar Additional Information After being purchased in 1967, NASA 808 was used as a testbed for general aviation flight control research. NASA's first project with the aircraft was the determination of its stability and control characterisitics in the Langley full-scale wind tunnel. The wind tunnel measurements were then correlated with in-flight measurements of the stability and control characteristics at Dryden. This was the first time full-scale wind tunnel measurements of a general aviation aircraft had been made since the late 1930s. As a result of the studies, several changes were made by the contractor to the aircraft to improve its flying qualities. These changes are manifested in later models of the airplance. Another project involving general aviation was the PA-30 program to define the operating techniques necessary to enable curved landing approaches as a part of routine operation at major airports. The program, in support of NASA's Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) project, was designed to facilitate large and small, STOL and conventional aircraft using the same runway.

INTRODUCTION
Although the League of Nations ceased to exist in 1946, its archives and historical collections survive as invaluable resources for historical research. In 1957, the Archives of the League of Nations was created. The Archives includes official records as well as portraits, paintings, caricatures, original artworks and unique objects d'art. In June 2000 Robert Goehlert led a research team to the League of Nations Archives, which included Jian Liu and Kris Bell, to start a digital library project dedicated to digitizing one of the League of Nations Archives’ photograph collections. In the summer of 2001, Bob and Jian returned to Geneva to continue work on the project. This time they were accompanied by Fenton Martin, Kenneth Steuer and Sarah Hammill. The League of Nations Overview of Photo Collections includes photos of: Personalities, Assemblies, Councils, Delegations, Commissions, Conferences, the Secretariat, the Permanent Court of International Justice, the Bureau International du Travail, and miscellaneous photos. The originals of the photos are held with the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) Library, League of Nations Archives Sub-Unit and are its property. Any other use of the photos on this website, including but not limited to commercial or scholarly reproductions, redistribution, publication or transmission, whether by electronic means or otherwise, without prior written permission and authorization from the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) Library is strictly prohibited.

Gisborne Photo News Collection The Photo News was a local photographic news magazine, a monthly publication that was hugely popular from its first appearance on 1 June 1954. A locally produced community magazine, it cost 2 shillings and its 56 pages were packed with photographs of the region’s people and events. Its popularity continued for more than 20 years. The final issue of 5 November 1975 cost 40c. and was 66 pages long. In June 1993 another local group restarted the Photo News; costing $3.00 it consisted of 64 pages. Like its predecessor the first few issues were filled with black and white photos but by November 1993 all pictures were in colour. It looked wonderful -but the price had to rise to $5.00. In 1995 the publishers changed the format to a larger size with fewer pages. Sales did not keep pace with costs and the magazine was discontinued in 1996. Tairawhiti Museum’s Research Centre holds a complete set of it, in which people of all ages delight in looking at.
