Treatment of Phlebitis
Treatment for phlebitis and what to do to conquer this disease.
Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis in the most general of terms means (inflamation of a vein), but refers to clots that form in the vein. The most common plebitis occurs in veins close to the skins's surface, often found in the legs. We also call this spider veins. Although annoying, this type of inflamation is usually harmless and typically goes away after a few days. A more serious form of phlebitis ocurs in the deeper interior veins of the legs. This type of phlebitis is more dangerous but less common. Interior veins are larger, clots tend to be bigger as well and are more likely to break free, traveling to the lungs. Most people with Deep Phlebitis don't even know they have it and don't seek medical help until it becomes a medical emergency. bodyOffer(23700) Symptoms of superficial Phlebitis include: A red, visible vein in your leg. Usually the vein feels hard to the touch, warm and tender. A throbbing sensation will sometimes ocur and the skin tissue surrounding the vein may become swollen and itchy. Also there might be a burning sensation beneath the skin's surface. There is also pain and heaviness when lowering the leg. Some sufferers report leg cramps or a pulling sensation. Symptoms of deep Phlebitis incluse: An abscence of symptoms. Pain and swelling in the whole leg. Slight fever, skin ulcers and a swelling in the leg that stays indented when pressed. Because Deep Phlebitis is rare most people don't recognize it. Usually someone affected ends up in the hospital before treatment begins.

Thrombus Phlebitis.
"Thrombus" is a partial closing up of the veins, often resulting from severe blows
or strains. It slows up the passage of blood through the veins and where this slow-
ing up occurs, the veins swell up into knots, these knots appearing over the legs
as protusions as the result of weakened vein walls. It would have been a very serious thing if any one of these protrusions should
happen to burst. In order to prevent this, the legs at all times the legs at all times
had to be bound with heavy rubber bandages in order to give support to the veak-
ened parts. "Phlebitis" is an inflammation of the vein. This was probably caused by the four
infected teeth that Rockne had removed earlier. However, the poison from them
had gone through the blood stream which caused great pain and tenderness along
the area of the affected blood vessels. Back to the illness page Back to the Rockne tribute page

A LONGER LIFE FOR HEART ATTACK VICTIMS
by: Dianne Partie Lange The chance of surviving for years after a heart attack appears to be improving significantly. Researchers have studied 25 years of data for 2,000 people whose lives were saved by resuscitation after their hearts had stopped and who were then released from the hospital. They found a nearly 60 percent reduction in death from heart disease during the most recent six years (1995 through 2001) compared with the first five-year period (1976 through 1980). During each successive five-year period since 1976, deaths from all causes dropped about 13 percent and heart-related deaths dropped 21 percent.

Phlebitis
Phlebitis is inflammation of the veins. It is most common in the legs and almost always takes place in varicose veins. The complications that can occur may be serious, so it is important to know a bit about the condition. To understand phlebitis, it is helpful to remember that arteries bring the blood from the heart into the head, arms, and legs and end in the network of small capillaries which then pass on into the veins that take the blood back to the heart and lungs. Blood flows more slowly through the veins and especially in varicose veins where they become dilated and more torturous. When added pressure is put on the veins by a lot of standing and squatting, by crossing the legs and by getting bumped, an inflammation takes place. This causes the area to become swollen, painful, red, and tender to touch. Once it begins, it can extend up and down the leg and may cause fever. At this point, it becomes urgent to be checked by the doctor and start immediate treatment. It is at this time that blood clots can develop and, if dislodged, circulate into the heart or lungs with fatal results.

Or search the encyclopaedia: phlebitis Inflammation of the wall of a vein. It is sometimes associated with varicose veins or with a blockage by a blood clot ( thrombosis ), in which case it is more accurately described as thrombophlebitis. Phlebitis may occur as a result of the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, or due to long-term use of contraceptive pills, or following prolonged immobility (which is why patients are mobilized as soon as possible after surgery). If a major vein is involved, nearly always in a leg, the part beyond the blockage swells and may remain engorged for weeks. It is very painful. Treatment is with anticoagulant drugs and sometimes surgery, depending on the cause.

PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Inflammation of the lining of a vein usually due to formation of a thrombus producing pain and tenderness along the course of the vein with edema of surrounding tissues, discoloration of overlying skin, and often various systemic symptoms.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Venous thrombosis usually begins with clot formation in a muscle vein of the calf or foot due to some defect in the clotting mechanism. Blood clots often form following trauma or surgery and, if a vein is blocked, back pressure causes the vein to swell, impedes circulation and the dead cells which rapidly form on the vein wall are replaced with fibrous, inelastic scar tissue.

    Peripheral Vascular Disease
(En español) Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) involves damage to or blockage in the blood vessels distant from your heart—the peripheral arteries and veins . Your peripheral arteries and veins carry blood to and from your arm and leg muscles and the organs in and below your stomach area. PVD may also affect the arteries leading to your head (see Carotid Artery Disease ). The main forms that PVD may take include blood clots, swelling (inflammation), or narrowing and blockage of the blood vessels. Diseases of the arteries may lead to Disease of the veins may lead to Arterial Blockage Much like the coronary arteries, the peripheral arteries can be blocked by plaque.
