The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece as a salute to mythological gods. The Games eventually evolved into a group of sporting events that take place every fourth summer and winter seasons and involve athletes from most countries throughout the world. Although the games were eliminated during the early Christian era, they were resurrected in 1896 and have been staged for 2 weeks every fourth year since then. The modern Olympic Games have adhered to this agenda, except during times of such international conflicts as World War I and II. DECISIONS MADE FOR SBC APPEALS
    By Kara Hull

    May 04, 2004
With 22 letters revealing the outcome of appeals for funding from the Student Budget Committee in the mail, the long wait is almost over for student organizations on campus. "It's just been really frustrating in waiting for the letter," said Steven Collins, treasurer of Vision, one of 22 groups who appealed SBC's original funding decision. "We don't really expect to get much out of the appeal [process], we're just waiting to get it." Groups will most likely be disappointed by the results, given that in a year where more than $1 million was requested with a $610, 862 budget for SBC approximately $10,000 was available for appeals, Overland said. Student organizations who appealed include: University Activities Organization, Graduate Student Senate, Vision, WFAL, WBGU, Dry Dock, the Black Student Union and University Ambassadors. "I used all the money available for appeals, but it certainly was not enough to fit the requests," Overland said.

International Society for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC)
ICOHTEC was founded as the Cold War was being waged with particular bitterness between the nations of the Eastern and Western Worlds. The intent was to provide a forum where scholars of both sides might meet and communicate about matters of mutual interest in the history of technology. The rapid political changes that transformed the world since 1991 led to a restructuring of ICOHTEC as a society of individual members rather than national delegations. Members pay annual dues of $25 and institutions $100. The subscription includes a newsletter appearing two or three times a year.
Society for the History of Technology (SHOT)
SHOT was formed in 1958 to encourage the study of the development of technology and its relations with society and culture. An interdisciplinary organization, SHOT is concerned not only with the history of technological devices and processes, but also with the relations of technology to science, politics, social change, the arts and humanities, and economics. A membership in SHOT connects you with almost 2000 individual members and 1500 institutions around the world. In addition to professional historians and museum curators, SHOT members include practicing scientists and engineers, anthropologists, librarians, political scientists, and economists.
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT)
SSIT of the IEEE has about 2000 members worldwide. The scope of the society includes such issues as environmental, health and safety implications of technology; engineering ethics and professional responsibility; history of electrotechnology; technical expertise and public policy; peace technology; and social issues related to energy, information technology and telecommunications. SSIT publishes a quarterly journal, IEEE Technology and Society Magazine, and sponsors periodic conferences entitled The International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS). Membership in SSIT is open to all IEEE members and student members. Affiliate membership in SSIT is available to persons who are not members of IEEE.
