Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind
Wilfrid Sellars, Richard Rorty
Study Guide by Robert B. Brandom The most important work by one of America's greatest twentieth-century philosophers, Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind is both the epitome of Wilfrid Sellars' entire philosophical system and a key document in the history of philosophy. First published in essay form in 1956, it helped bring about a sea change in analytic philosophy. It broke the link, which had bound Russell and Ayer to Locke and Humethe doctrine of "knowledge by acquaintance." Sellars' attack on the Myth of the Given in Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind was a decisive move in turning analytic philosophy away from the foundationalist motives of the logical empiricists and raised doubts about the very idea of "epistemology."

Edited Volume on Economics and Philosophy of Mind Mark D. White (CUNY-CSI, Economics) and Barbara Montero (CUNY-CSI and The Graduate Center, Philosophy) are soliciting contributions to an edited volume on the intersection between economics and philosophy of mind. This is a very new field of inquiry to which this book stands to make an early and significant contribution, and we already have interest from a publisher (Routledge). We encourage any scholars (economists and philosophers) interested in exploring a topic between these two areas to submit a paper and/or abstract by May 1st, 2004.

Book Series: STUDIES IN COGNITIVE SYSTEMS Volume 9
Connectionism, the most exciting recent development in cognitive science, suggests an alternative to the conception of the mind as a computer, which has dominated work within this field virtually since the advent of artificial intelligence in the 1950s. Connectionism invites a strikingly different conception of the nature of the brain and especially of how the brain might be related to the mind. It promises new answers to old questions about the nature of perception, recognition, memory, consciousness, understanding, and even knowledge itself.
Most philosophical discussion of connectionism has focused upon the issue of whether it can replace, in whole or in part, the classic computational conception of the mind. The problems that have been of central concern include: what are, or what should be, the assumptions that are fundamental to the connectionist approach? about the nature of the mind and the structure of mental states? about the character of cognitive processes? The papers in this collection range from the earliest reflections by philosophers on issues of this kind to the latest developments in this ongoing debate. They are crucial to an understanding of this important alternative to computational models of the mind.
