Recent works in the philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and on consciousness in the sciences

Contemporary Philosophy of Mind: An Annotated Bibliography
Compiled by David Chalmers , Department of Philosophy, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721. E-mail: chalmers@arizona.edu . (c) 2001 David J. Chalmers. Last updated: July 15, 2001. This is a bibliography of recent work in the philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and on consciousness in the sciences. It consists of 5702 entries, and is divided into six parts, each of which is further divided by topic and subtopic. Many of the entries are annotated with a brief summary. (I don't necessarily take responsibility for these annotations, many of which I wrote in the distant past.) The bibliography consists mostly of papers and books from the last few decades, with density of coverage increasing with proximity to the present. Most of the core areas of contemporary philosophy of mind are covered, but some areas (e.g. (philosophy of perception, philosophy of action, propositional attitude semantics, moral psychology) receive less coverage than others. A fuller table of contents is below. Part 6 is relatively new and is not annotated. It's not strictly "philosophy of mind", but I've put it here for convenience. Of course the division between parts is inexact. There is plenty of material by philosophers in part 6, and plenty of material by scientists in the other parts (especially parts 1, 4, and 5).

Aims and Scope: Philosophical Explorations aims to provide a forum for analytically minded philosophers interested in genuine dialogue with continental philosophy and the (social) sciences. The editors believe that a comprehensive understanding of mind and action requires insights of philosophers working in both traditions and of scientists working in the field. One issue a year is devoted to a special topic. The journal consists of substantial papers and also provides critical discussions. Contributions are welcomed in the area of the philosophy of mind and action and related disciplines such as moral psychology, ethics, philosophical anthropology, social philosophy, political philosophy and philosophy of the social sciences. The journal also welcomes contributions of an interdisciplinary kind, establishing bridges between philosophy and, for example, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, psychology, and political science.

Life and Influences Donald Davidson, one of the most significant philosophers of the XX century, was born 6 March, 1917 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He studied English, Comparative Literature and Classics in his undergraduate years at Harvard. In his sophomore year at Harvard, Davidson attended two classes that made a lasting impression on him. These two classes on philosophy were taught by Alfred North Whitehead in the last year of his career. Davidson was then accepted to graduate studies in philosophy at Harvard, where his teacher was Willard Van Orman Quine. Quine set Davidson on a course in philosophy quite different from that of Whitehead. Subsequently, Davidson did his dissertation on Plato's Philebus According to Davidson, "The central thesis that emerged was that when Plato had reworked the theory of ideas as a consequence of the explorations and criticisms of the Parmenides, Sophist, Theaetetus

Overview
The philosophy of mind is that area of philosophy connected with questions about mind, its nature, its operation, and its connections with the rest of the universe. Classical problems in the area involve the relationship between the mind and the body, paradoxes concerning personal identity, and questions about the existence and nature of free will. Philosophy of mind has deep connections not only with philosophical research in metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of science, ethics, and the like, but also (and increasingly) with work outside philosophy in linguistics, artificial intelligence, and psychology, to name a few important examples. I hope that, by presenting some of the major questions and considering some of the proposed programs in the field, I can introduce you to the issues and whet your philosophical appetites.
Course Requirements
Those taking the class for credit are expected to hand in three short (5-7) page papers (one for each of the course segments). I shall hand out a list of topics for the papers before each is due. Grades will be determined on the basis of the three papers, and I'll use class participation as a way of deciding borderline cases.

Blockheads and Other Brutes
Years ago Ned Block defined a system known today as a Blockhead ("Troubles with Functionalism", Minnesota Studies in the Philosophy of Science ) to illustrate a problem that look-up tables pose for the Turing test. Blockhead is a "stupid" machine that stores all possible conversations within some limited duration and, thus, passes the Turing Test . This is, of course physically impossible, as Frank Tipler argues with back of the envelope calculations in The Physics of Immortality In typical philosophical fashion we suspend the laws of physics and look to conceivability and logical possibility to analyze this scenario. Given that Blockheads are logically possible, what does it say about the Turing Test? Should we not attribute intelligence to Blockhead merely because he uses brute-force methods? It is difficult to know how to respond to this. When we are trying to break a candidate program for the Turing test we ask it questions that, while coherent, have high surprisal. This is used to defeat look-up tables/canned responses, which are the hallmarks of poorly designed AI. However, in this case it is stipulated that the table has all of the possible answers, so such a strategy is useless. So, we have a system that passes the Turing Test with abhorrent methods. Is this really a problem? zombie arguments seriously and succumb to the quagmire of privileged access.

77. Functionalism [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Theory in the philosophy of mind which holds that mental states are functional states.
http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/f/function.htm
Functionalism
Functionalism may be contrasted both to behaviorism and identity theory in its account of mental events. Behaviorism defines mental events solely in relation to sensory input and behavioral output. Unfortunately, this includes any input/output device, such as a mousetrap, to which we would not want to attribute mental states. However, in addition to input and output relations, functionalism also acknowledges causal relations with other internal mental states, which mousetraps do not exhibit (such as the mental state of worry). Identity theory restricts mental events to brain activity. Functionalism, by contrast, acknowledges that mental events may be instantiated in systems or machines other than brains. There are several different types of functionalism, each based on different models; these include Turing machine functionalism, causal theory of mind, and teleological (homuncular) functionalism. Turing machine functionalism, proposed by Hilary Putnam, uses as its model a special theoretical mechanical device (the Turing machine). Most succinctly, the machine (a) receives input, (b) carries out the instructions of the input program, (c) changes its internal state, and (d) produces an appropriate output based on the input and instructions. A pop machine, for example, shows these features insofar as it has instructions on various acceptable inputs with various associated behavioral outputs. Based on this model, Putnam argues that humans are probablistic automatons.

Philosophy of mind
Philosophy of mind is the philosophical study of the nature of the mind mental events mental functions , and consciousness . These areas give rise to some very difficult problems and questions; there are many opinions as to their solutions and answers, if any. This article attempts to suggest the scope of the philosophy of mind and indicate some of the important questions, but does not provide answers. Table of contents 1 What is the mind?

What is the mind?
Is the mind nothing more than a series of particular thoughts, feelings, and so forth, or is it something over and above those particular thoughts, feelings, and so forth? When we ask that, we are simply asking what the relation is between the mind and mental events. In other words, we could simply restate the question in terms of mental events, like this: Is the mind nothing more than a series of mental events, or is it something over and above the mental events that we say occur "in" it? This isn't a question we are going to try to answer. But of course there are other questions we could ask about what the mind is; we might raise the

Phenomenal Consciousness

Peter Carruthers This study of consciousness develops and defends a novel account in terms of higher-order thought. ‘Carruthers’ book is a marvellous and wide-ranging critical introduction to the problem of conciousness from a representational theory point of view … Carruthers also develops and defends a highly original version of the representational theory of consciousness which boasts a remarkable degree of depth and precision … an intriguing and original addition to the growing range of representational theories of consciousness, which is the most exciting area in consciousness studies at the moment … Carruthers’ book is now an essential part of the literature in this area.’ William Seager, University of Toronto Hardback ( Paperback
