Introduction: Conceptual and Theoretical Matters
Classical Chinese theory of mind is similar to Western "folk psychology" in that both mirror their respective background view of language. They differ in ways that fit those folk theories of language. The core Chinese concept is xin (the heart-mind). As the translation suggests, Chinese folk psychology lacked a contrast between cognitive and affective states ([representative ideas, cognition, reason, beliefs] versus [desires, motives, emotions, feelings]). The xin guides action, but not via beliefs and desires. It takes input from the world and guides action in light of it. Most thinkers share those core beliefs. Herbert Fingarette argued that Chinese (Confucius at least) had no psychological theory. Along with the absence of belief-desire explanation of action, they do not offer psychological (inner mental representation) explanations of language (meaning). We find neither the focus on an inner world populated with mental objects nor any preoccupation with questions of the correspondence of the subjective and objective worlds. Fingarette explained this as reflecting an appreciation of the deep conventional nature of both linguistic and moral meaning. He saw this reflected in the Confucian focus on li (ritual) and its emphasis on sociology and history rather than psychology. The meaning, the very existence, of a handshake depends on a historical convention. It rests on no mental acts such as sincerity or intent. The latter may accompany the conventional act and give it a kind of aesthetic grace, but they do not explain it.

What is the mind?
Is the mind nothing more than a series of particular thoughts, feelings, and so forth, or is it something over and above those particular thoughts, feelings, and so forth? When we ask that, we are simply asking what the relation is between the mind and mental events. In other words, we could simply restate the question in terms of mental events, like this: Is the mind nothing more than a series of mental events, or is it something over and above the mental events that we say occur "in" it? This article does not try to answer this question. But of course there are other questions we could ask about what the mind is; we might raise the

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Server will be down for maintenance on 2004-06-11 from about 18:00 to 18:30 UTC. In philosophy of mind dualism is a set of beliefs which begin with the claim that mental events and physical events are totally different kinds of events. It is constrasted with varying kinds of monism , including materialism and phenomenalism . Dualism is one answer to the mind-body problem Pluralism holds that there are even more kinds of events or "stuff" in the world. Note that other fields have their own meanings for "dualism". See dualism Table of contents 1 Types of dualism 2 Arguments for dualism 3 Arguments against dualism 4 Biological Naturalism ... edit
Types of dualism
Various kinds of dualism are distinguished based on if and how mind and matter are thought to causally interact. In dualistic interactionism (also Cartesian dualism , as it was Descartes ' position), arguably the most popular and widespread version, mind events can cause physical events and vice versa. Thus when Johnny touches a hot stove and burns his skin (physical events), he experiences pain (a mental event). Conversely, when Jessica decides her dog needs exercise (a mental event), she takes it for a walk (a physical event). This is arguably most people's common sense view of the relationship between mind and matter.

    (a) At first I develop a general conception of holism that is intended to be applicable to candidates for holism in any area. My purpose is to show that holism is not opposed to rational analysis. It can be captured by the conceptual tools of analytic philosophy.

Entry by Daniel Barbiero from the Dictionary of philosophy of mind. Reviews key aspects of this thinker's doctrine.

Searle, John - (b. 1932, Denver, CO; Ph.D. philosophy, Oxford; currently Professor of Philosophy, UC Berkeley.) In philosophy of mind, Searle is known for his critique of computationalism, his theory of intentionality, and his work on the problem of consciousness. See Chinese room intentionality ; intention-in- action; aspectual shape ; prior intention; The Background Critique of Computationalism and Strong AI The Theory of Intentionality The Theory of Consciousness ... References Searle took his Ph.D. in philosophy at Oxford, where he studied under John Austin and later became Lecturer in Philosophy at Christ Church from 1957-1959. Subsequently he went to UC Berkeley, where he became Professor of Philosophy. Searle's early work was in speech act theory, culminating in (1969) and (1979). He is credited with having elaborated the theory of speech acts associated with Austin, and with having introduced into the theory original elements of his own, most notably regarding the role played by speakers' and receivers' intentions in constituting the meaning of speech acts. Consistent with the focus on intentionality, his interest turned to philosophy of mind, where his major work can be seen as consisting in three main efforts: a critique of computationalism and strong Artificial Intelligence (AI); the development of a theory of intentionality; and the formulation of a naturalized theory of consciousness. The Critique of Computationalism and Strong AI The best known example of Searle's critique of computationalism and strong AI is his Chinese Room Argument (see separate entry). The main thrust of this thought experiment was to show that the syntactic manipulation of formal symbols does not by itself constitute a semantics. The implications for computationalism and strong AI were held to be the following: first, computationalism fails because the formal syntax of a computer program has been shown not to be intrinsically semantic, and second, strong AI fails because a system's behaving as if it had mental states is insufficient to establish that it does in fact have these states. Interestingly, Searle's assertion that syntax is insufficient to establish semantics predates the Chinese Room Argument and in fact represents one of the main objections to the generative grammar program that he voiced back in the early 1970s (e.g., 1972).

Summary of Hegel's Philosophy of Mind
      Paul Trejo, August 1993
For over 180 years students have complained that Hegel's best-known book of philosophy, the PHENOMENOLOGY OF MIND (alias PHENOMENOLOGY OF SPIRIT), is too difficult to read. A few have tried to summarize Hegel's book, and often their summaries were longer than the original, and just as difficult to read. Today, right here on the INTERNET, I give to you a twelve page summary of this famous book, a book that inspired generations of European philosophers since it first appeared in 1807. This summary is meant for the beginner in phenomenological philosophy, to encourage more students to struggle with the book for themselves. This book has a colorful history, and is well praised by thinkers as David Strauss, Bruno Bauer, Marx, Engels, Ortega y Gasset, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Lacan, Camus, and many more. I hope some will try again to read this masterpiece. If you do, please find the translation by Miller (1971) and avoid the translation by Baillie (1907). And watch this space for more exciting Hegelian philosophy, right here on the INTERNET.

‘Philosophy of mind’, and ‘philosophy of psychology’ are two terms for the same general area of philosophical inquiry: the nature of mental phenomena and their connection with behaviour and, in more recent discussions, the brain. Much work in this area reflects a revolution in psychology that began mid-century. Before then, largely in reaction to traditional claims about the mind being non-physical (see Dualism Descartes ), many thought that a scientific psychology should avoid talk of ‘private’ mental states. Investigation of such states had seemed to be based on unreliable introspection (see Introspection, psychology of ), not subject to independent checking (see Private language argument ), and to invite dubious ideas of telepathy (see Parapsychology ). Consequently, psychologists like B.F. Skinner and J.B. Watson, and philosophers like W.V. Quine and Gilbert Ryle argued that scientific psychology should confine itself to studying publicly observable relations between stimuli and responses (see Behaviourism, methodological and scientific
