Institute of Foreign Philosophy, Peking University Brief Introduction Institute of Foreign Philosophy at Peking University was founded in 1964, and was then the only research base for foreign philosophy in Mainland China. Through construction of almost 40 years, at the present the institute has gradually evolved into a specific teaching and researching institution in foreign philosophy, with its own competent faculty members and complete areas of specification. A lot of distinguished scholars, for example, Tscha Hung, Xiong Wei, Huang Xin-Chuan, Ren Hua, Qi Liang-Ji, Wang Tai-Qing, and Zhang Shi-Ying, have ever taught and studied in the Institute. Now, in addition to such famous scholars as Chen Qi-Wei and Lou Yu-Lie, the Institute has assembled a team of scholars whose influences on the philosophical community are being rapidly increased. The Institute consists of four specific research departments (Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, Modern Western Philosophy, Contemporary Continental Philosophy, and Oriental Philosophy) and two centers (Peking Center for Phenomenological Research and Center for the Studies of Analytical Philosophy at Peking University). Among its faculty members are 21 full-time research fellows (11 professors, 8 associate professors, and 2 assistant professors) and 11 part-time visiting professors from some leading universities in China , all of whom are full professors.

School of Humanities "The School of Humanities is an open, friendly, stimulating and welcoming environment that brings together a group of related disciplines - American studies, art history, cinema, English, history, modern languages, linguistics, music and philosophy - in a common endeavour to study, understand and disseminate knowledge of the historical, literary and artistic manifestations of human existence.
Our student body is diverse and cosmopolitan, and our new curriculum encourages our students to take courses in more than one discipline, both through a set of joint degrees and through interdisciplinary programmes that give access to a wealth of ideas and approaches to thought and culture.
At postgraduate level, the School maintains a strong link between teaching and research, building on the work of the Humanities Graduate Research Centre, which has for some years demonstrated the value and excitement of inter-disciplinary work. We have a healthy number of postgraduate students and research-active faculty who work together to create a thriving and distinctive research culture.
The idea of the humanities encompasses the performing and creative arts as well as traditional academic disciplines. Focusing on this aspect has already led to a new programme in the study of cinema that is part of a broader goal to enhance the study of visual culture in the School. We will follow this up with developments in music, drama and creative writing that will enrich our intellectual and cultural life."

BANK, n. As befits a pillar of the Free Enterprise System, a bank serves the needs of the working poor in the same assiduous manner that a pack of hyenas serves the needs of a wounded water buffalo. First published in 1938 by Little, Brown and Co., New York Republished in 2003 by Bedrock Editions and Riverbend Publishing, Helena, Montana Cover painting by Dale Livezey On Sarpy Creek
by Ira S. Nelson Out of print since 1938, the long awaited re-issue of On Sarpy Creek is finally here. A publishing project of Bedrock Editions in partnership with Riverbend Publishing (both of Helena, Montana) this wonderful novel can now be read and savored by readers everywhere. Set in eastern Montana during the drought years following World War I, the story centers on the lives of the homesteading families who live on Sarpy Creek. This is a drama with heart and emotion, but is not overly sentimental. The characters are richly drawn: their thoughts, actions, and words are honestly and genuinely portrayed. This is the kind of story that pulls you in and doesn't let you go until the last word is read. On Sarpy Creek is Ira S. Nelson's only known work, but all who read it consider it a little masterpiece. Simple, yet profound, this family saga is complete with births and deaths, passionate, tender love and marital strife, a shocking murder, inner struggles about spirituality and existence, and the power of love and loyalty that sometimes, but not always, overcomes adversity and hardship.

Jesus. A school for witchcraft and philosophy devoted to supernatural adventures and wisdom. From the Director, Mr. Darrow Clark: Dear Sir or Madam: "Witchcraft" can be defined as the craft of the wise , or as the craft of the witches . It is a primary subject taught at this school, but by no means the only one. Witchcraft is a much maligned subject. The witches who dare to practice it often become the object of public scorn and ridicule even today. The warlock (the Old English name for a man who practices witchcraft, as I recall) fares little better in today's world.

Nominalism, Realism, Conceptualism
These terms are used to designate the theories that have been proposed as solutions of one of the most important questions in philosophy, often referred to as the problem of universals , which, while it was a favourite subject for discussion in ancient times, and especially in the Middle Ages , is still prominent in modern and contemporary philosophy. We propose to discuss in this article: I. The Nature of the Problem and the Suggested Solutions;
II. The Principal Historic Forms of Nominalism, Realism, and Conceptualism;
III. The Claims of Moderate Realism. I. THE PROBLEM AND THE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS The problem of universals is the problem of the correspondence of our intellectual concepts to things existing outside our intellect. Whereas external objects are determinate, individual, formally exclusive of all multiplicity, our concepts or mental representations offer us the realities independent of all particular determination; they are abstract and universal. The question, therefore, is to discover to what extent the concepts of the mind correspond to the things they represent; how the flower we conceive represents the flower existing in nature; in a word, whether our ideas are faithful and have an objective reality. Four solutions of the problem have been offered. It is necessary to describe them carefully, as writers do not always use the terms in the same sense.

Click on the links below to go to essays. The Collapse of Enlightenment Civic Culture
The form of civic culture dominant in the West for three hundred years was based upon the ideas of modernist liberal political philosophy, ideas that are increasingly losing their credibility and thereby threatening the viability of the form of civic culture based on them. (944 words, 16KB) The Anti-Rhetorical Rhetoric of Pure Theory
The peculiar form of universalism and essentialism proper to modernist liberal political philosophy created an equally peculiar form of liberal democratic civic culture, one that could achieve its rhetorical task only by denying its own rhetorical character. (3,083 words, 35KB) The Misrepresentation of Citizenship in Social Contract Theories
Modernist liberal political theory's use of social contract narratives to define a concept of civic justice falsely represented the normative standpoint of liberal democratic citizenship as possessing an historical or anthropological priority to other cultural standpoints, a misrepresentation that must be overcome if the postmodern reconstruction of civic culture is to succeed. (2,499 words, 31KB) Citizenship and the Myth of the Autonomy of Reason
Modernist civic culture linked the normative standpoint of citizenship with the foundationalist epistemological doctrine of the autonomy of reason and, as a result, the postmodern reconstruction of civic culture requires a not only a radical rethinking of our concept of citizenship, but also a radical critique of our concepts of reason and knowledge. (3,700 words, 41KB)
