by William Hanna Thomson M.D., LL.D. Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia
by Samuel Johnson Directed to people who "listen with credulity to the whispers of fancy and pursue with eagerness, the phantoms of hope," this philosophical romance published in 1759 looks harshly at the human vanity of searching for happiness. Wishing to learn from others about life and how to live it, Rasselas follows a personal odyessy of meeting people from all walks of life, from hermits to poets, and observing how they live. Complete happiness seems to be elusive and leads to the moral conclusion that most people are so busy making life choices that they forget to just live. Thoughts on Man

42. Bohm, Bell, And Boom! Quantum Mechanics And The End Of Modern Dualism
From History and philosophy of Science, Fall, 1997. By Dr. Ess.
http://www.drury.edu/faculty/ess/philsci/bell.html
Notes on David Peat, Einstein's Moon: Bell's Theorem and the Curious Quest for Quantum Reality History and Philosophy of Science - Fall, 1997 - Dr. Ess Outline: "Bohm, Bell - and Boom! The End of Modern Dualism" The End of Cartesian Dualism: Physics (re)discovers Philosophy over against Cartesian and especially 19th ct. positivist dualisms which separate physics and philosophy - the emergence of quantum mechanics forces physicists to be become philosophers again. Indeed, the logic of complementarity which q.m. requires ripples into a larger (re)turn to complementary relationships between physics, philosophy, and religion.
(In other terms: Cartesian dualism defines both 19th ct. positivism and fundamentalism as "mirror images" of one another: each agree that only one mode of knowing can be true - and the alternative mode(s) must be false: Positivism Fundamentalism ("calculative") reason (= natural science)
"religion" "religion"
reason/science The end of Cartesian dualism thus undermines the dualistic epistemologies of both positivism and fundamentalism.)

http://www.friesian.com/hist-2.htm
The Beginning of Modern Science
One thing that happened during the Renaissance that was of great importance for the later character of modern philosophy was the birth of modern science. Even as in the Middle Ages philosophy was often thought of as the "handmaiden of theology," modern philosophers have often thought of their discipline as little more than the "handmaiden of science." Even for those who haven't thought that, the shadow of science, its spectacular success and its influence on modern life and history, have been hard to ignore. For a long time, philosophers as diverse as David Hume Karl Marx , and Edmund Husserl have seen the value of their in work in the claim that they were making philosophy "scientific." Those claims should have ended with Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), who for the first time clearly provided a distinction between the issues that science could deal with and those that it couldn't, but since Kant's theory could not be demonstrated the same way as a scientific theory, the spell of science, even if it is only through pseudo-science, continues. The word "science" itself is simply the Latin word for knowledge: scientia . Until the 1840's what we now call science was "natural philosophy," so that even Isaac Newton's great book on motion and gravity, published in 1687, was

Modern Philosophy after Kant
Although pre-Kantian modern philosophy is easily (perhaps too easily) organized as a debate between Rationalists and Empiricists, modern philosophy after Kant presents a much greater tangle of influences. The Flow Chart of Modern Philosophy after Kant below attempts to produce some kind of organization and representation of schools and influences. Note that the Continental tradition spreads out into a least four major trends, which then begin to overlap with each other and, ultimately, with Anglo-American schools. The Anglo-American tradition, succeeding British Empiricism, exhibits relatively contentless and sterile doctrines, like "Pragmatism," then begins to adopt similar doctrines from the Continent, consistent with a native Scientism, like Logicism, Logical Positivism, and Linguistic Analysis, and then finally succumbs to a withering blast of Continental Nihilism from Existentialism and Deconstruction. A small Analytic remnant (people like Searle) is thus faced with a tide of skepticism, irrationalism, and obscurantism in a combined Anglo-American-Continental school of "Post-Modernism" no attempt is made to comprehensively list representatives of this popular but miserable movement. The basic inspiration of this chart is the chart in Will Durant's The Story of Philosophy [Simon and Schuster, 1933, pp. 80-81]. Durant's version spans the whole history of Western philosophy from the Pre-Socratics to his own day. For much of the history of Western Philosophy it is a gravely deficient representation. Durant includes only

Being and Becoming in Modern Physics
Does time flow or lapse or pass? Are the future or the past as real as the present? These metaphysical questions have been debated for more than two millennia, with no resolution in sight. Modern physics provides us, however, with tools that enable us to sharpen these old questions and generate new arguments. Does the special theory of relativity, for example, show that there is no passage or that the future is as real as the present? The focus of this entry will be these new questions and arguments.
