Hence arises the fact that everything better struggles through only with difficulty, becomes effective, or meets with a hearing, but the absurd and perverse in the realm of thought, the dull and tasteless in the sphere of art, and the wicked and fraudulent in the sphere of action, really assert a supremacy that is disturbed only by brief interruptions. Division of Philosophy WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy concerns those fundamental questions about reality, knowledge, and how we should live that fall outside the scope of the sciences. Very roughly, it can be thought of as comprising five main areas:
Metaphysics (the nature of reality): Does God exist? Does an objective world exist independently of our minds? What is the relation between the mind and the body? What is the nature of personal identity? Is free will compatible with determinism? What is the nature of causation?
Epistemology (the theory of knowledge): What is knowledge? How do I know that I am not now dreaming or hallucinating? Can we have knowledge of things we have not observed, such as an electron or the distant past? Can we have knowledge of the future?
Ethics, Political Philosophy, and Aesthetics (value theory): What is the nature of morality and justice? What are the correct principles of morality and of justice? What sorts of legal and social institutions are just? What is beauty? What makes an object a work of art?
Logic and Philosophy of Language (the study of the main tools of philosophy): What makes an argument valid? What is truth? How do linguistic terms refer to objects in the world?

    1. Introduction.
The Department of Philosophy offers courses intended to acquaint students with philosophical methods, systems, and problems, as well as supply a philosophical background for graduate study in philosophy or related areas. Courses in religious studies are intended to acquaint students with the history and the beliefs of the major religions of the world. Programs in the department lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in philosophy. Minors are offered in philosophy and religious studies.
    2. What is Philosophy?
The word "philosophy" comes from two Greek words, phileo (love) and sophia (wisdom), and literally means a love of wisdom. For the ancient Greeks, the philosopher was regarded as one who loved wisdom for its own sake. Throughout the history of philosophy (which is dated back to the sixth century B.C.) philosophers have been concerned with such questions as the nature of virtue, the meaning of existence, the nature of human knowledge, the nature of reality, cosmology (or what we might now call astronomy or astrophysics), the essence of nature (or what we now call physics), the nature of God, etc. Philosophy was traditionally called the Queen of the Sciences. One reason for this title was that philosophy sought the underlying reasons and assumptions of many other disciplines and in many cases actually gave rise to new branches of study. For example, up until the late nineteenth century what is now called physical science was a branch of philosophy called natural philosophy. What we now call political science was traditionally called political philosophy. And, perhaps surprisingly, even what is now called psychology was a branch of philosophy. In fact, it wasn’t until fairly late in the twentieth century that psychology departments in some major Universities became separate from philosophy departments.

    ABOUT MYSELF
I am a 4th Degree Black Belt in Okinawan Kenpo Karate, and I hold two 2nd Degree Brown Belt ranks in two other styles, Goshin Jutsu Jujitsu and No Tora Ryu (AMERICAN TIGER STYLE)and I study other styles to enhance my education. Martial arts is a very important part of my life. I love teaching and sharing what I have learned with others. I teach at a dojo and also the YWCA. I have seen and felt so many wonderful benefits by studying martial arts. I love teaching and I have wonderful students that are very eager to learn. I teach eclectic(whatever works, use it). My base style is okinawan kenpo the root of where I started the study of martial arts. I feel that we can learn from all styles. I feel each art form has many things that are helpful to know. I am against all violent acts unless there is no other way out of a bad situation. I do workshops and demos at schools and for organizations to teach self defense and also to make teenagers aware of alternatives to drug abuse and gang involvement. Martial arts promotes self esteem, and better mental and physical health. These are just a few of the many benefits that the martial arts has to offer to a person studying this ancient art form...

PROGRAMS AND CLIENTELE SUPPORTED The Program in the History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) at the University of Notre Dame is one of a handful of interdisciplinary programs in the United States that offer graduate degrees, both the M.A. and Ph.D., in the joint fields of history and philosophy of science. Since HPS degrees incorporate requirements in the two tracks, history or philosophy, they draw on the resources of the University in philosophy, history of science, theology, the Medieval Institute, and the natural and social sciences. The intellectual arena spans the cosmologies of ancient Babylonia and Greece to the physics, biology, medicine, and technology of the 19th century. Particular emphasis is given to the changes in the natural sciences and the conception of science constituting the "Scientific Revolution" of the 17th century. HPS's interdisciplinary character aligns its curriculum and readings closely with the programs and collections of several other Institutes and Departments at the University. These include; the Medieval Institute for medieval natural philosophy; the Philosophy Department for philosophical issues relating to the nature of scientific explanation, criteria of proof, observation and theory-ladenness, ontological import of scientific theory, as well as issues in the development of specific fields of science, i.e., quantum mechanics, evolutionary biology, and economics; the Center for Philosophy of Religion; and the Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values.
