A general consideration on the nature of laws, written by Spencer and published in 1864.

Herbert Spencer (1864)
Laws in General
The recognition of Law being the recognition of uniformity of relations among phenomena, it follows that the order in which different groups of phenomena are reduced to law, must depend on the frequency with which the uniform relations they severally display are distinctly experienced. At any given stage of progress, those uniformities will be best known with which men's minds have been oftenest and most strongly impressed. In proportion partly to the number of times a relation has been presented to consciousness (not merely to the senses), and in proportion partly to the vividness with which the terms of the relation have been cognised, will be the degree in which the constancy of connexion is perceived. The succession in which relations are generalised being thus determined, there result certain derivative principles to which this succession must more immediately and obviously conform. First is the directness with which personal welfare is affected . While, among surrounding things, many do not appreciably influence us in any way, some produce pleasures and some pains, in various degrees; and manifestly, those things whose actions on the organism for good or evil are most decided, will

This primer provides a general framework for freeing any information covered under copyright and patent laws.

A primer on the ethics of "intellectual property"
on this website and elsewhere , is copiable without restrictions. Over the last several years, especially after I wrote the Free Music Philosophy in mid-1993, I have been arguing about the so-called "rights to intellectual property" on the Internet. Generally, if you're on the same wavelength, the argument proceeds well and is even illuminating at times. But sometimes you're arguing with people who lack the fundamentals in logic or intellectual property issues and pointing out their lack of logic leads to the reverse accusation and the argument degenerates into a situation where each person accuses the other of being illogical. Sometimes, people (intentionally or otherwise) misunderstand you, because you have to make arguments you've spent years thinking about in a few posts, usually under some time constraint. This is not meant as an insult to anyone; some of it I think stems from using this medium for communication. What I have done here is provide some logical rationale for many of the statements I might make, in a question and answer format. Why is the abridgement of the [freedom of] copying, use, distribution, and modification of published information unethical?

Introductory chapter: Brief survey of the history of linguistics
The course will deal with linguistics proper , not with languages and language. This science has gone through phases with shortcomings. Three phases may be distinguished, or three successive approaches adopted by those who took a language as an object of study. Later on came a linguistics proper , aware of its object. The first of these phases is that of grammar , invented by the Greeks and carried on unchanged by the French. It never had any philosophical view of a language as such. That's more the concern of logic. All traditional grammar is normative grammar, that is, dominated by a preoccupation with laying down rules, and distinguishing between a certain allegedly 'correct' language and another, allegedly 'incorrect'; which straight away precludes any broader view of the language phenomenon as a whole. Later and only at the beginning of the 19th century, if we are talking of major movements (and leaving out the precursors, the 'philological' school at Alexandria), came

from Chapter I: Its Intellectual Character
The spirit and the principle of the synthesis which all true philosophers should endeavour to establish, have now been defined. I proceed to explain the method that should be followed in the task, and the peculiar difficulty with which it is attended. The object of the synthesis will not be secured until it embraces the whole extent of its domain, the moral and practical departments as well as the intellectual. But these three departments cannot be dealt with simultaneously. They follow an order of succession which, so far from dissevering them from the whole to which they belong, is seen when carefully examined to be a natural result of their mutual dependence. The truth is, and it is a truth of great importance, that Thoughts must be systematised before Feelings, Feelings before Actions. It is doubtless, owing to a confused apprehension of this truth, that philosophers hitherto, in framing their systems of human nature, have dealt almost exclusively with our intellectual faculties. The necessity of commencing with the coordination of ideas is not merely due to the fact that the relations of these, being more simple and more susceptible of demonstration, form a useful logical preparation for the remainder of the task. On closer examination we find a more important, though less obvious reason. If this first portion of the work be once efficiently performed, it is the foundation of all the rest. In what remains no very serious difficulty will occur, provided always that we content ourselves with that degree of completeness which the ultimate purpose of the system requires.
