John DePoe
Athens and Jerusalem:
Where the Christian Faith Meets Reason The early church father Tertullian once asked, "What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?" He was implying that faith ought to have nothing to do with reason and philosophy. Many in his time and after his time have disagreed with his declaration and have found a unique harmony between Athens and Jerusalem (or reason and faith). This website intends to represent the view that faith and reason go hand-in-hand. Among the main subjects explored in my Christian philosophy section are the proofs for God's existence, the problem of evil, abortion, and more. This website is continually growing, so check back frequently to see new and revised articles. What is Apologetics? Coming from the Greek word apologia , which means "to make a defense," apologetics has classically been defined as an intelligent defense of the faith. This defense usually revolves around philosophical arguments although science, history, archeology, psychology and other fields of study are often incorporated into it as well. Apologetics serves two purposes: 1) to defend areas where Christians' beliefs are challenged and 2) to give positive reasons for accepting the Christian faith. Why study Christian Philosophy?

83. The Play Of Mind: Ten Interactive Programs On Philosophy And The History Of Idea
Download any of ten free interactive programs on philosophy including ones on ethics, art, law, politics, religion, human nature and the general history of ideas.
http://www.theplayofmind.com
The Play of Mind: Software on the History of Ideas This site is for anyone interested in philosophy or the history of ideas. You can download any of ten interactive offered, ranging from easy to challenging. The programs are free and can be run in any Windows system - from 95 to XP. The Forbears programs are basic and relatively effortless introductions to the history of ideas. You are shown what some great thinkers have said on a variety of issues under the general topic (philosophy, ethics, politics or America). You are also asked to choose those quotes you most agree with and in return the program analyzes your choices and displays a graph of your "philosophical proclivities." Download Forbears Programs The Bull Session programs are computerized meetings or clashings of mind yours included. The final product will be a dialogue where you are discussing several difficult questions with thinkers from around the world and throughout time. Because you have to actually write your responses, the four programs here (on art, religion, law and humanity) are more demanding than the Forbears programs. Download Bull Session Programs The two Tree Owls programs (one on European philosophers, the other on American) are challenging introductions to the history of ideas. You are shown some of the most pivotal and provocative ideas of some of the most important thinkers. You are also asked to indicate to what extent you agree with them, and graphs will be periodically displayed based on your responses.

Guidelines on Reading Philosophy It will be difficult for you to make sense of some of the articles we'll be reading. This is partly because they discuss abstract ideas that you're not accustomed to thinking about. They may also use technical vocabulary which is new to you. Sometimes it won't be obvious what the overall argument of the paper is supposed to be. The prose may be complicated, and you may need to pick the article apart sentence by sentence. Here are some tips to make the process easier and more effective.
Contents
Skim the Article to Find its Conclusion and Get a Sense of its Structure
A good way to begin when you're trying to read a difficult article is to first skim the article to identify what the author's main conclusion is. Pay special attention to the opening and closing paragraphs, since authors will often tell you there what they intend to be arguing for. When you do figure out what the author's main conclusion is, try to restate it in your own words. This will help you to be sure that you really understand what the author is arguing for. When you're skimming the article, try also to get a general sense of what's going on in each part of the discussion. What is the structure of the article? Sometimes authors will tell you, early in the paper, what their argument will look like. This makes your job easier.

George Long:
Philosophy Of Antoninus
Stoic Philosophy Part I. and the poets Persius and Juvenal, whose energetic language and manly thoughts may be as instructive to us now as they might have been to their contemporaries. Persius died under Nero's bloody reign, but Juvenal had the good fortune to survive the tyrant Domitian and to see the better times of Nerva, Trajan, and Hadrian. His best precepts are derived from the Stoic school, and they are enforced in his finest verses by the unrivalled vigour of the Latin language. [Footnote 1: I have omitted Seneca, Nero's preceptor. He was in a sense a Stoic and he has said many good things in a very fine way. There is a judgment of Gellius (XII. 2) on Seneca, or rather a statement of what some people thought of his philosophy, and it is not favourable. His writings and his life must be taken together, and I have nothing more to say of him here. The reader will find a notice of Seneca and his philosophy in "Seekers after God," by the Rev. F. W. Farrar. Macmillan and Co.] [Footnote 2: Ribbeck has laboured to prove that those Satires which contain philosophical precepts are not the work of the real, but of a false Juvenal, a Declamator. Still the verses exist, and were written by somebody who was acquainted with the Stoic doctrines.]

Are you not irritated by the news reporting on religious confrontations in Northern Ireland, by the Israel/Palestine `holy land' confrontations, fundamentalist killings, past and future holocausts, human rights violations, e.g. Indians beaten into Christianization equalled with civilization (as still in use for Canadian Indians, see internet report Karen Cunningham/Canada forum Education), ABC warfare proliferation among irresponsible politicians and religious leadership - all consequences of immature dogmatic ideas about religion. Religion means helping the people develop their religiousness along universal moral standards of ethics built on own moral conscience, not on the long-past authoritarian moral of God, a group, or state. If it is built on your own God-gift conscience, there will be no way anymore for people obeying to kill when ordered so by a so-called fake higher authority. This avoids the self-extinction of mankind Keywords: term of `cosmosofy' for a cross-bordered universal religion and ethics can be freely used and is not registered.
