62. Teaching Philosophy
I sincerely believe that the study of philosophy can be a lifechanging I periodically use in-class discussion groups to help my students take an active role
http://ls.poly.edu/~dkaplan/teachingphil.html
Teaching Philosophy David M. Kaplan Teaching Methods and Goals I have taught at three different universities: Fordham, Hofstra, and Polytechnic. I found I adopted a somewhat different style at each place. At Fordham (following the curriculum) I taught texts historically. I tried to do justice to the thought of each philosopher we read in the context of the history of philosophy. When I taught upper-division courses with majors I could teach at a very high level and rely on their intellectual curiosity. At Hofstra I had to do a lot more to engage the students and convince them that the subject matter was worth investigating. I adopted a more Socratic style, shortened the reading assignments, and made an even more concerted effort to make the material relevant to their daily experience. Finally at Polytechnic, where my engineering students often have limited verbal and writing skills but are exceptionally bright, I tend to teach from anthologies in a more Analytic, problem-based approached. By the time they take their humanities electives they are juniors and seniors, so they are mature, experienced, not particularly intellectually curious but very bright and capable. They can handle difficult material if I present it as an argument.
