  • Select a topic. (This can be challenging. If your topic is too narrow, you will have difficulty finding enough information; if it is too broad, you will be swamped with information) Background information can often be found in encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference works . If you decide to use the information, don't forget to cite it in proper fashion. Remember to paraphrase, use your own language, and don't replace your arguments with quotations. Bacon, Francis
Bacon was the lord chancellor of England; his removal in 1621 makes for a most interesting story. For legal philosophers, however, Francis Bacon is most well known for his delineation of the principles of the inductive scientific method , which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science. Bacon was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power."
    Bagehot, Walter
Mr. Bagehot was a mathematician; a moral philosopher; a political economist; a trained, though not a practising, lawyer; a banker; a shipowner; and, from 1860 till his too early death in 1877, the editor and manager of the Economist . Primarily, however, Bagehot was a reader and critic of books. I have a number of Bagehot's books including:

History of Psychology Web Sites This is a small (but growing!) list of sites related to the history of psychology. As you write your paper, I recommend that you check these sites out. However, please do not use these sites as your ONLY source - you still need to spend some time in the libary. Check out this web site or the APA site for information on how to cite web pages. Please note: If you are going to use web sites, you must reference them. Also, don't make the assumption that all web sites are acceptable. You must learn to separate the wheat from the chaff. Just because the site looks pretty doesn't mean the author has a clue about the subject he or she is posting. Check the University of Georgia site and the Widener University site for more help on this process. For general information on APA style writing, go to Need Help With APA Style C. Green's Website Once here, go to Relevant Links. This site has a number of good links to other stuff, but I really recommend that you take a look at the classic works (underneath history and philosopy). These are the original writing, papers, and books by the people that we will be discussing in class. There are an amazing number of articles and books on-line. You can also link to APA's Division 26 (History of Psychology) For a site that focuses on women in psychology, check out

Teaching Philosophy in Estonia - Three Years later (since 1992)
    Bulletin 34, avril 1996
In 1992 a depth report was presented in Pehritzsch by the Estonian philosopher Rein Ruutsoo. Since that report many of changes have taken place. This paper will briefly discuss these changes.
The curriculum, pointed out in the previous report, has been revised a couple of times and in 1994 a preliminary version was published. Our educational authorities set their hopes on an overwhelming public discussion among the teachers, scientists and other people related to the curriculum development process. Unfortunately it seems that the resonance was not as active as was expected for various reasons. Our teachers' current low economic position and their permanent attention to the vague dispute are among those. However despite everything the work on the curriculum progressed and in 1995, after only one year, a new version of the curriculum was published. In the first version of the curriculum philosophy was included into the framework of social subjects.
In this framework it was intended to be the last stage of long-term studies called "the study of man". The content included the most essential problems of philosophical anthropology. A keen discussion arose concerning the place of philosopher among other subjects and finally it was agreed that it deserves a separate position and relevant title in the curriculum. It seems to be an advantage as well that teachers have two alternative syllabuses of philosophy to choose among, dealing respectively with the problems of philosophical anthropology and basic classical philosophical problems. Schools are free to choose their 35 hours of compulsory coursework.

Philosophy "Philosophy means literally the love of wisdom... Philosophy is that knowledge of human reason which penetrates to the ultimate foundations of things; ...it is concerned with all reality, but especially with the existence and purpose of man... Philosophy... is the universal science because it considers the totality of reality and investigates the basic causes of all things; it pushes on to the ultimate and absolute cause of all being. The primary starting point of philosophy is human activity, especially man's acts of knowing and willing..." (From: Philosophical Dictionary by Walter Brugger. UNI Stacks B 43 B713 1972). Great Thinkers and Visionaries
This is a list of people whose ideas on how and where the world is - and should be - evolving, may be of interest to those who want to understand the frontier of human thought, at least according to my opinion. Originally I created it to give credit to people who influenced my ideas but as it often happens the project took a life of its own. Please enjoy these resources. It would be great if you could support this site or help me improve it . Now you can also take part in the discussions on the Visionaries mailing list or on the Delphi Thinkers Forum
I apologize if my selection of thinkers is not sufficiently balanced. In Russia , reading most of them could get me into Big Trouble. I hope to fix these gaps now - with your help.
You may also want to take part in the efforts that should lead to distribution of visionary ideas based on their merits rather then cute facade or interests of social power structures.
