    52. Boethius, Educator, Statesman, Philosopher
In 476 Odoacer, an Ostrogothic general, deposed the Emperor Romulus Augustus andtook the throne for himself. His biography of Boethius Boethius As philosopher.
    http://justus.anglican.org/resources/bio/274.html
Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (Boh-EE-tee-us) was born in about 475 and died in about 524. He appears on some calendars as Severinus, on 23 October. To avoid conflict with the feast of James of Jerusalem , I have moved him to the 22nd. Anicius is not his forename (like Marcus or Gaius or Publius), but his clan name. His forename (which I do not know) is frequently omitted, just as Gaius Julius Caesar is often called simply Julius Caesar. Gaius is his forename, or praenomen (chosen by his father), Julius is his nomen, the name of his clan (gens), and Caesar (his cognomen) is the name of his family within the clan. Other names are added for various reasons, or simply to reduce confusion with others having the same nomen and cognomen. Thus, in the name Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, the "Africanus" is an agnomen ("accomplishment name"), indicating that this is the General Who Conquered Africa. Background In 476 Odoacer, an Ostrogothic general, deposed the Emperor Romulus Augustus and took the throne for himself. (This date is traditionally given as the Fall of the Roman Empire.) In 493 Odoacer was replaced by Theodoric, another Ostrogoth, who was recognized as Emperor of the West by the Emperor at Byzantium (whose daughter then married Theodoric). The Goths at that time were Arians. (That is, they honored Jesus as the Incarnate Word, and honored the Word as the first creation of God, but not as co-eternal with the Father. The Watchtower Society, also called J-'s Witnesses, are the best-known Arian group today.) Theodoric did not seek to impose Arianism on his subjects, and kept the traditional forms of government, including many Romans along with Goths among his advisors. His reign was a time of peace and prosperity, his decisions were usually just, and his subjects had little to complain of.

    Aristotle
by Ron Kurtus (revised 5 April 2003) Aristotle (384-323 BC) was a Greek philosopher, mathematician, scientist, and physician. He studied under Plato, tutored Alexander the Great and had his own school in Athens. He is considered of the great figures in the history of Western thought. His political affiliation with Macedonia resulted in his death, when the people in Athens rebelling against Macedonian rule. Questions you may have about this are:
    • What did he do at different phases in his life? What were Aristotle's beliefs? How did his studies influence the world?
This lesson will try to answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz at the end of the lesson.

More and more biographies of philosophers are being written. Do they tell us anything important about philosophy?

Colloquy: Join an online discussion on whether biographies add to our understanding of the ideas of philosophers. Alfred North Whitehead, in the throes of an agonizing depression, which left her all but severed from everyone around her, and from the world itself. Something snapped in Russell. He became "overwhelmed," he would later write, with a "sense of the solitude of each human soul." Within five minutes of the experience, he came to believe that the loneliness of existence is "unendurable," that the only way out is love of the "highest intensity," that "whatever does not spring" from such love is harmful "or at best useless," and that social relations should be ordered accordingly. That became the ethical vision that would animate Russell's work and thinking for the next seven decades.

    BIOGRAPHIES AND CRITICISMS CLASSIFICATION
Architects Artists Criticism of Individual Works General Biography Procedures ... Special Categories POLICY BACKGROUND Prior to the adoption of Dewey 19, the UIUC Library used a variety of special numbers for both individual and collective biographies, in addition to "B.", which was assigned for individual biography, and 921-928 for collective biography. Many of the previously used numbers for both individual and collective biographies have been discontinued in Dewey. In accordance with the policy that was established at the adoption of Dewey 19, "B." is no longer used in establishing new biography numbers. Under 920, only 920.001-920.09 and 920.7 are used for very general collective biographies. Most new (unestablished) individual biographies , as well as other, subject specific collective biographies, are currently classed by subject , adding either standard subdivision (for individual biography), or (for collective biography) as appropriate from Table 1. For purposes of establishing a consistent policy regarding the use of previously established biography numbers versus when to establish new biography numbers, CPAC voted in 1997 in favor of a

    Irene of Athens
    c. 752 Ruler
    Saint

    Woman of Note
    ... Byzantium
Upon the death of her husband, Emperor Leo IV, Irene became regent for her 10-year-old son, Constantine VI. She successfully defended her position against numerous plots and dominated her son in the process. Empress Irene was a strong proponent of the use of Icons in the Christian church, a practice that had been prohibited for 60 years. After violent opposition from Iconoclasts, she managed to arrange the Second Council of Nicaea in 787, at which the use of Icons was restored. For this and for her patronage of monasteries, she is considered a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. When her son grew older and tried to wrest his indepencence from his mother, Irene had him blinded and imprisoned. She then took the title of Emperor for herself, becoming the first woman to rule the empire. She was also rumored to have considered a marriage to
