Return to Table of Contents JOHN M. GATES, THE U.S. ARMY AND IRREGULAR WARFARE, CHAPTER THREE THE PACIFICATION OF THE PHILIPPINES Of the U. S. Army's early encounters with irregulars, none is more relevant to contemporary concerns than the army's campaign in the Philippines at the end of the nineteenth century, and my study of the Philippine-American War provided the foundation for much of my thinking on irregular warfare. I began research on the topic in 1964 when I embarked upon a Ph.D. program at Duke University. At the time the army's successful campaign in the Philippines stood in marked contrast to its then stalemated efforts in Vietnam. I finished my thesis in 1967, and over the next two years I revised the manuscript for publication in the Greenwood Press military history series. Although I sent the completed book manuscript to the publisher in 1970, publication was delayed until 1973. I have no idea why publication took so long, but I have always suspected that someone at the press did not want to bring out the book until American participation in the Vietnam War had ended. Praising the U. S. Army, even for work done more than a half century before, was bound to prove controversial, as it has. Since 1973 I have revised my views on the Philippine campaign to incorporate the work of other scholars and new research of my own. The first formal opportunity to present an updated analysis came in 1980 when I was invited to participate in the United States Air Force Academy's Ninth Military History Symposium. I revised the symposium paper, "The Pacification of the Philippines, 1898-1902,"

The philippines. The history of the philippines, many argue, did not beginwith the coming of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.
http://www.bohol.net/philippines.htm
The Philippines The history of the Philippines, many argue, did not begin with the coming of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in . Rather, it began in the 13th century, when 10 datus from Borneo, each with a hundred of his kinsmen, landed in what is now known as Panay Island in the Visayas. Yet, it was Magellan, and the succeeding expeditions from Spain, who put the Philippine archipelago on the map of the world. The intrepid Magellan was dubbed the "discoverer" of the Philippines after he landed upon the island of Homonhon, near Samar, on March 17, 1521, he then claimed these islands in the name of King Philip II of Spain and named them Felipinas, the Philippines. He was later killed in Mactan Island of Cebu in a clash with native warriors led by a chieftain named Lapu-lapu.

the Philippines Manila, Luzon Themes Regions More Information The Philippines in earlier times The First Inhabitants 40.000 years ago It is thought that the earliest inhabitants of the Philippines lived some 40000 years ago. On Palawan, the long and small island in de western Visayas, human bones were found dating to about 22.000 years ago. Stone tools from ancient times were found too on Palawan. The age of the tools is estimated to be about 30.000 years old. A analyses showed that the tools have similar features as tools which were found on Kalimantan (Indonesia). Picture © sami deleon The original people of the Philippines were ancestors of the people known today as Negritos or Aeta . They are very small people with a dark skin and curly brown hair. Picture: © University of Hohenheim The Aeta came 13000 - 10000 years ago from the Asian continent. In earlier times they lived widespread throughout the Philippines. Today they are living in the remote highland areas of Luzon, Palawan, Panay, Negros and Mindanao. About 2300 years ago Malayan people arrived from the mainland in the Philippines and brought a more advanced culture; dairy, iron melting and production of iron tools, pottery techniques and the system of sawah's (rice fields). In the tenth century Muslim traders come from Kalimantan (Indonesia) to the Philippines. A few centuries later, the Islam spread out in the southern part of the Philippines. Until now, the Islam is strong rooted on Mindanao and the other (smaller) islands of the southern part of the Philippines.

Manila money changing - Travelers Cheques traveler checks cash cards
Changing money or travelers checks in Manila can sometimes be easy or difficult
US$ Travelers Checks US$ Travelers checks can be changed at most banks in Manila although you may have to go to their Head Office branches for even small amounts of traveler checks - say more than US$500. There is a per traveler check charge so changing one large traveler check can be cheaper than two small ones. Major hotels will also change US$ Travelers Checks if you are staying with them. Major Super Store Malls will also change US$ Travelers checks. Remember, you will need to produce your passport when you change Travelers Checks. Non-US$ Travelers Cheques. Traveler cheques, not in US$ can be difficult to change. Major international hotel chains may change non US$ traveler cheques if you are staying with them or the best bank for sterling pounds traveler cheques is the Standard Chartered bank in Makati. The China bank in UN Avenue, Ermita will change sterling travelers cheques up to 200 pounds per day. Cash US$ US$ Cash is the easiest money form to change in Manila or the rest of the Philippines. US$ cash can be changed to Pesos at almost any bank, hotel, major shopping mall or money changer. Most retailers including restaurants and taxi drivers will accept us dollars cash although this is officially not permitted. It is always best to avoid spending US$ cash at retail places as not only is it officially not permitted but the rate you get will be poor and change might be difficult
