ni Antipas Delotavo Introduction Our Tagalog Interactive Language and Philippine Culture Resources site is designed for both the serious and casual learners of Tagalog and Philippine culture. For serious Tagalog learners, this site is basically supplemental to the more comprehensive Tagalog language materials available in hardcopies (such as books for formal study of Tagalog, dictionaries, etc.) as it provides interactive learning through various activities (reading, writing, speaking, listening). For casual learners of Tagalog, this site provides a quick overview of the Tagalog language and Philippine culture through the use of interactive learning activities, such as Tagalog phrases, songs, etc. What follows is a brief description of how one can use the site based on his or her interests on the Tagalog language and about Philippine culture. back to top Learning Tagalog on this Site This site provides interactive Tagalog language learning activities, primarily through thematic lessons. The lessons are divided into two: Beginning Tagalog 1 and Beginning Tagalog 2 . The Philippines Chapel lit up at night, with the July 4 fireworks and the Washington Monument in the background. Photo by Jeff Tinsley 100 participants and presenters from the Philippines marked the centennial of the Philippine declaration of independence from Spain with a Folklife Festival program, " Pahiyas : A Philippine Harvest" on the National Mall, Washington, D.C. June 24-July 5, 1998. The program was the result of several years of research and development by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife Programs & Cultural Studies and the Philippine Cultural Center. Pahiyas , a Tagalog word meaning "gems" or something of value given to strengthen a relationship, became a theme of a program that was organized, in part, to connect Americans, and particularly Filipino Americans, with the cultures of the Philippines. This centennial year provided an opportunity to revisit a close and long-standing relationship between the two countries. Pahiyas also is the name of a harvest Festival in central Luzon and as such the choice of this program title reflects a harvest of traditions that were identified during an extensive research project in 1996-98. Some of the very best community-based artists who demonstrate mastery of their tradition came to the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to represent their country. These artists were presented in contexts familiar to all Filipinos. A basketball court, always a focal point of any barrio or

The Cyberbayan page started in October 1994 as one of the first web pages served from the Philippines under the title "Soc.Culture.Filipino" . It started as an index of the dozen or so Philippine web sites on line at the time and grew to over 500 links by 1996. It became nearly impossible to keep them updated and more current lists were available so I retired the "SCF" page and shifted its the focus to first person accounts and pictures of my own Philippine experiences acquired during my Foreign Service tours there.
If you are looking for Philippine links try Ken Ilio's comprehensive site, www.tribo.org . You might also enjoy reading Arthur's Vignettes
Thanks for taking the time to let me share my Philippine experiences. After the surfing the links below I invite you to take a look at my personal web site super.nova.org where you will find a wide range of other orginal material on technology, photography, motorcycles and other things which interest me.

Likha Philippines Dance Rondalla History of LIKHA In May of 1992, a collective of individuals came together to form a group that celebrates Philippine culture and tradition. From this group, LIKHA Pilipino Folk Ensemble was born. Since their very first annual presentation at San Francisco State University's McKenna Theatre, the goal of LIKHA meaning creation in Pilipino, is to collect and preserve indigenous Philippine art forms as expressed in music, literature, dance, arts, crafts and costumes. Now in it's seventh season under the artistic direction of Rudi C. Soriano, the Ensemble continues it's mission in presenting all aspects of the Pilipino culture to the general public with the hopes of educating their audience, both Pilpino and non-Pilipino alike, about Philippine culture. This mission does not stop at the boundaries of the San Francisco Bay Area, the company's home. LIKHA continues to expand its horizons by performing in different cities outside of California. Performances outside the Bay Area include collaborating with Canada's Kababayang Pilipino in Vancouver, British Columbia and Edmonton, Canada Aside from participating with the different Philippine Festivals LIKHA has also performed in the SF Ethnic Dance Festival, Bay Area Dance Series Festival, Asian Arts and Dance Festival in Los Angeles, CA and Eugene, Oregon and the Third International Dance Festival in Malta highlighting a performance for the President of Malta.

News Opinion ... Global Nation Straw votes in the wind A BITTERLY contested election triggers an epidemic of straw votes. People cast about for indicators as to where the wind blows. The straw vote "bug" bit editors attending a Philippine Press Institute (PPI) meeting who "voted." An economist like Solita Monsod or Felipe Miranda or a statistician and pollster like Mahar Mangahas could rightly scoff that the process wouldn't pass scientific muster. Indeed, the PPI straw vote was merely the "gut-reactions" of hard-nosed journalists who track, in areas where their papers circulate, where the wind blows. Here's how candidates fared in "editors' preferences": President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo topped, followed by Panfilo Lacson (until now, a fourth placer in pre-election surveys). Fernando Poe Jr. slid to third. Eddie Villanueva dislodged Raul Roco and, at the tail end came Eddie Gil. "Eddie Gil?" an incredulous publisher asked.
