It certainly was well worth the small price I paid if only for the tips on understanding my IN LAWS! Anyways, a well worth read. Rating: Interesting Culture Book This book is very easy to read. The layout is friendly, and the content is interesting, and educational. The Philippines is a country that appears to be Western. Many Filipinos speak English, and Manila can appear deceivingly Western. But the author points out that the Filipino way of life has not really changed over the past 500 years. http://www.send.org/philippines/culture.htm
Diversity Values You've just walked off the plane at Manila International Airport and the smiling guys in the picture above greet you with bright faces, songs and upbeat kundiman guitar music. You're in the Philippines, where Asia wears a smile! Out the door, you catch a Jeepney - that ubiquitous, bright and funny vehicle that emerged from WWII scraps with a look that could only happen here in the Philippines. No other corner of Asia is quite so diverse, quite so expressive and quite so welcoming. Huge brassy shopping malls squat cheek to cheek with open markets; the roar of your Jeepney competes with the ever-present crow of the roosters; the sleek new elevated train across Manila flies over housing more diverse than you can imagine. Everywhere you go you are greeted with smiles and lifted eyebrows. English swirls around your head with Tagalog and multiple other sibilant dialects. The air smells vaguely of hot rice cooked over charcoal. The heat and humidity accentuate the smell of flowers. Tropical takes on new meaning. You've come a long way but the people you meet are so gracious and engaging that you think, "Maybe, I've just come home."

Culture
The Philippines has developed a mixed culture from the blending of foreign influences with native elements. Today, the Muslims, and some of the isolated tribes, are the only people whose culture remains unadulterated by Spanish and American influences. Although traditional theatre, literature and kundimans (love songs) in the national language have experienced a resurgence since Cory Aquino's People Power movement, visitors are more likely to witness beauty contests, lurid soap operas, violent and sentimental Filipino movies, and local bands perfectly imitating Western pop tunes. About 10% of Filipinos (the so-called cultural minority groups or tribal Filipinos) retain their traditional culture. There are some 60 ethnological groups, ranging from the Badjao of the Sulu archipelago, who are sea gypsies, to the head-hunting Kalinga in the north of Bontoc. The Philippines is the only Christian country in Asia. Over 90% of the population claim to follow Christian faiths. The largest of the minority religious groups is the Muslims, who live chiefly on Mindanao and in the Sulu archipelago. There is also a Philippine Independence Church, some Buddhists, and a small number of animists.

Philippines History and Culture
History The Negritos were the original inhabitants of the Philippines who arrived some 25,000 years ago. However, archaeological findings suggest that there were earlier settlers. There were other waves of migrations of Indo-Chinese, who were followed by the Malayans. In 1521, the Portuguese voyager Ferdinand Magellan arrived and found the islands to be thriving centers of commerce with traders from India, Arabia and China. Powerful Islamic influence was established in 1380 the Arab-taught Makdum. However, the arrival of Magellan who claimed the archipelago for Spain facilitated the growth of Christianity and the emergence of a new culture.

Part II: Doing Business
Business Culture
Values in society
The Filipino culture is a mixture of Malay, Spanish and American cultures. Optimism and tolerance are typical features of the Filipino society and business culture. Filipinos are among the most hospitable people in the world. The fact that everybody speaks English makes it easy to feel comfortable. However, this might sometimes give rise to mistaken feeling of security and trust. For a Filipino it can be difficult to distinguish between an objective task and an emotional involvement. The power distance is high in the Filipino culture and as in Latin cultures generally, masculinity is a prevailing value. Family ties are also very strong and can even affect businesses. The high respect given to age should be taken into account when choosing representatives in the Philippines. Until recently, everything foreign has been appreciated highly in the Philippines. However, because of the economic development of the country, a healthy sense of nationality is rising. But still the valuation of imported products remains very high among average consumers.
Concept of time
Social Networks
Filipinos believe that human interaction and contact form the basis of a successful business relationship. In the Philippines it's really important who you know and who knows you. Name dropping is a normal way of getting to know people and in establishing relationships. Personal relationships mean everything, things can't simply be handled by fax and telephone.

At the Helm of
a Marketing Make-over
By Val G. Abelgas For all its beautiful beaches, friendly people, scenic spots, classy hotels, and colorful fiestas, the Philippines still has a long way to go as far as getting the most out of its tourism potential is concerned. Having all the right ingredients to entice tourists is one thing, and actually bringing them in to experience all that the country has to offer is another.
The Philippines is perhaps one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in Asia, and yet the country lags behind other Asian countries, like Hongkong, Singapore and Thailand, in terms of tourist arrivals and tourism revenues. Negative publicity, particularly those related to the peace and order condition, is cited as the primary reason for the far-less-than-ideal tourism numbers, but many people involved in the tourism industry also cite the lack of worldwide promotions as a primary reason for the poor tourist arrivals.
To promote the Philippines as a primary tourist destination in Asia, the Department of Tourism has long maintained offices in various cities all over the world. But, as it had always been the case in the past, these offices must work within a very limited budget, made worse by the further devaluation of the Philippine peso and the troubled economy back home.

These are sites about the United States occupation of the Philippines in the early half of this century. Many Americans felt
like the United States was going over American moral boundaries when it took over the Philippines (since the Philippines was on the other side of the world). Many Filipinos believe that America wanted to exploit the Philippines because I think many people were forced to work in the mines and factories (just as in Spanish times). Also, many people were killed trying to get the Americans out, whether they were Warays, Tagalogs, Cebuanos, Boholanos, Ilocanos, Bicolanos, Kapampangans, etc.

INTRODUCTION
Cultural directions in the Philippines are generally coordinated by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) created by Republic Act 7356 in 1992. It is an independent government body tasked to be the overall coordinating and national policy-making body for all culture and artistic endeavors of the country. NCCA has four subcommissions, namely:
  • Subcommission on the Arts
  • Subcommission on the Cultural Heritage
  • Subcommission on Cultural Dissemination
  • Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts
Complementing NCCA and its subcommissions are the following national cultural agencies:
National Commission for Culture and the Arts
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) was born in 1992 with the Presidential Commission on Culture and Arts as its predecessor-in-interest. It is an independent government body tasked to be the overall coordinating and national policy-making body for all culture and artistic endeavors of the country. It was first created by a presidential directive, Executive Order 118 penned by President Aquino in 1987 which created the Presidential Commission on Culture and Arts and was later institutionalized by a legislative act, Republic Act 7356 in 1992. The Bill was authored jointly by Senators Edgardo Angara, Heherson Alvarez, Leticia Ramos-Shahani and Congressman Carlos Padilla.

To accomplish this, the National Museum offers publications, exhibitions, library services, seminar workshops, and others. The National Museum has three major goals. As an educational institution, the National Museum disseminates scientific and technical knowledge in more understandable and practical forms through lectures, exhibitions, interviews and publications for students and the general public.
