Culture
The Philippines has developed a mixed culture from the blending of foreign influences with native elements. Today some of the isolated tribes are the only people whose culture remains unadulterated by earlier Muslim and later Spanish and American influences. Although traditional theatre, literature and kundimans (love songs) in the national language have experienced a resurgence since Cory Aquino's People Power movement, visitors are more likely to witness beauty contests, lurid soap operas, violent and sentimental Filipino movies, and local bands perfectly imitating Western pop tunes. About 10% of Filipinos (the so-called cultural minority groups or tribal Filipinos) retain their traditional culture. There are some 60 ethnological groups, ranging from the Badjao of the Sulu archipelago, who are sea gypsies, to the head-hunting Kalinga north of Bontoc. The Philippines is the only Christian country in Asia. Over 90% of the population claim to follow Christian faiths. The largest of the minority religious groups is the Muslims, who live chiefly on Mindanao and in the Sulu archipelago. There is also a Philippine Independence Church, some Buddhists, and a small number of animists. The geography and history of the Philippines have conspired to produce a multiplicity of languages, some 80 dialects in total. The concept of a national language developed after the Spanish-American War in 1898 and Tagalog was declared the national language in 1936. There were several other contenders for this role, including Cebuano, Hiligaynon and Ilocano. A compromise reached in 1973 confirmed Pilipino as the national language. This is based on Tagalog, but has linguistic elements of other Philippine languages. Despite this, English remains the language of commerce and politics in the Philippines.

Philippines History
Philippine history has been summed up in the phrase "400 years in a convent, 50 years in Hollywood," which refers to the two very different eras of colonial domination - first by Spain and then by the U.S. Both eras began with naval actions. The first was in 1521, when Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan came upon the islands during the first round-the-world voyage, but foolishly became involved in local politics and was killed by Lapu Lapu, a tribal chieftain now immortalized as the first Filipino to resist foreign rule. The islands were governed by Spain until 1898, when the nation became the only official overseas colony of the U.S., following Admiral George Dewey's victory over a Spanish fleet in Manila Bay. A U.S.-Filipino war followed the Spanish-American War and ended only when Emilio Aguinaldo, the Filipino leader, was captured by U.S. troops while in the course of negotiations. Aguinaldo did, however, extract a promise for independence by 1946 - a promise that was kept in spite of an intervening war and occupation.

    Philippine Fiestas and Holidays
The fiesta is part and parcel of Filipino culture. Through good times and bad times, the fiesta must go on. Each city and barrio has at least one local festival of its own, usually on the feast of its patron saint, so that there is always a fiesta going on somewhere in the country. But the biggest and most elaborate festival of all is Christmas, a season celebrated with all the pomp and pageantry the fun-loving Filipino can manage. ATI-ATIHAN
    Kalibo, Aklan
    13-19 January
The Ati-Atihan Festival commemorates the 13th century land deal between 10 migrating Bornean chieftains and the aboriginal Ati King Marikudo. It also honors the town patron, the infant Sto. Ni?o. The ceaseless, rhythmic pounding of drums get to you, and before you know it you are on the street, shuffling your feet, shaking your head, waving your hands - and joining thousands of soot-blacked, gaily-costumed revelers in an ancient ritual of mindless merriment. A familiar battle cry reaches your ears, and amidst all this confusion you remember where you are: Kalibo, Aklan. "Viva, Sto. Ni?o!" The Ati-Atihan celebration is echoed in many parts of the country.

Philippines Culture The original proto-Malay stock in The Philippines is these days mingled with Chinese, Spanish, American, and Arab blood resulting from early trading contacts and subsequent colonisation.
The 'official' language in The Philippines is Tagalog, the main language spoken in Luzon, where the power base is. Visayan is widely spoken throughout the group of islands south from Luzon down to Mindanao, though each island has its own language or dialect and of course the ethnic minorities also retain their own languages and customs.
    Colonial Rule
The Spanish ruled the Philippines from Mexico until the struggle for independence in the late 19th century. During the American war with Spain (to decide the fate of Cuba), the Philippines sided with the USA, which culminated in another 50 years foreign domination, this time by the Americans.
During WW2 The Philippines was occupied by the Japanese.

rule and contact with merchants and traders culminated in a unique blend of eastand west, both in the appearance and culture of the people of the Philippines.
    http://www.bergen.org/AAST/projects/Philippines/culture1.htm
The Philippines are marked by a true blend of cultures; east really meets west. The main background of the Philippines people is Indonesion and Malay, along with some Chinese and Spanish elements as well. The history of American rule and contact with merchants and traders culminated in a unique blend of east and west, both in the appearance and culture of the people of the Philippines.
Hospitality, a trait displayed by every Filipino, makes these people legendary in Southeast Asia. Seldom can you find such hospitable people who enjoy the company of their western visitors. Due to their long association with Spain, Filipinos are emotional and passionate about life in a way that seems more Latin than Asian.
    Religion:
The Spaniards introduced Christianity (the Roman Catholic faith) and succeeded in converting the overwhelming majority of Filipinos. About 83% of the total population belongs to the Roman Catholic faith. 9% of Filipino people are Protestant, 5% Muslim, and 3% are Buddhist or some other faith.
    Language:
The national language of the Philippines is Pilipino, which is based on the language of Tagalog, although there are at least one or two dialects spoken in every region. English is both spoken and understood throughout the country, especially in business negotiations and in the government. The American occupation was responsible for teaching the Filipino people the American language. The Philippines is currently the third-largest English speaking country in the world. Hokkien, Cantonese, and Mandarin are spoken by older members of the Filipino-Chinese community.

But to all who did accept him He gave power to become children of God, to all who believe in the name of him who was born not of human stock or urge of the flesh or will of man but of God himself. The Word was made flesh, he lived among us and we saw his glory the glory that is his as the only Son of the Father full of grace and truth. (Jn. 1, 11-14) Introduction . In accordance with the Holy Father's hopes for the renewal of the Church in his letter "On the Coming of the Third Millennium" ( Tertio Millennio Adveniente , 1995), we issue this year our third exhortation on a crucial area of Philippine life. In 1997, we spoke on our politics; last year on our economy; this year we propose to focus on yet another aspect of our national life: our culture. From what we have seen already about Philippine politics and economics, it is clear much of the evil as well as the good we have noted in them stem to a large extent from our culture—the way of life distinctive of us as a people, especially the values that we live by.

The most infamous chapter in Philippine history began when Ferdinand Marcos was elected president in 1965 and re-elected in 1969. Barred by the constitution from seeking a third term, he declared martial law in 1972 and rewrote the constitution. Over the next 15 years, his government became one of the most corrupt in the world. Estimates vary, but it is possible Marcos siphoned US$10 billion from the Philippine treasury - while his constituents became some of the poorest people in Asia.
