CHEMICAL ENGINEERS convert scientific discoveries into marketable products. They are involved in many aspects of chemical production, research and design, as well as in the construction and operation of industrial plants. Chemical engineering is a diverse and complex profession. Frequently, engineers specialize in one area, such as food, pharmaceuticals, heat transfer and energy conversion, petrochemicals (chemicals made from petroleum or natural gas), or consumer products such as plastics, detergents, paint, and synthetic textiles. Others specialize in one particular aspect of chemical production, such as oxidation, evaporation, or polymerization (the process of joining single molecules together into long chains).

Programs of study and degree requirements
The M.S. degree program requires a minimum of 32 semester hours beyond the baccalaureate degree. The student typically devotes two thirds of these hours to petroleum engineering graduate courses, including thesis-related research, and one third to graduate courses taught in other departments, such as mathematics, computer science, business, and geology. An acceptable thesis is required for the M.S. degree.
The Ph.D. degree program requires a minimum of 96 semester hours beyond the baccalaureate degree. Students in the Ph.D. program devote at least one third of their time to petroleum engineering courses, approximately one third to research, and approximately one third to courses outside the department. An acceptable dissertation is required for the Ph.D. degree.
The D.Eng. degree program also requires a minimum of 96 semester hours beyond the baccalaureate degree, which include 80 hours of course work and 16 hours of a professional internship. An acceptable record of study is required for the D.Eng. degree.
Students entering the Graduate Program in Petroleum Engineering with degrees in areas other than petroleum engineering may be required to take prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level. These courses are required to ensure proficiency in petroleum engineering skills and academic success in graduate course work.

Prospecting for Petroleum Engineers With oil prices up, these experts are in great demand after years of downsizing have decimated their ranks
Printer-Friendly Version
E-Mail This Story
SHARP SHORTFALL. In fact, the industry may soon be looking at an acute shortage of petroleum engineers. Demand is rising, it turns out, just as the ranks of those already on the job are dwindling. An aging workforce has been devastated by rampant downsizing over the past two decades, causing many experienced engineers to abandon the business.
Those layoffs in turn sent shock waves through university programs. In 1985, a year before oil prices crashed, some 1,719 college undergrads received a bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering, according to the U.S. Education Dept. This school year, the system is expected to produce only 200 to 300 such grads. At the same time, many energy companies are making plans that depend on having plenty of petroleum engineers around. Based on industry researcher John S. Herold's survey of 217 oil and gas producers, worldwide exploration and production spending is expected to increase 10%, to $71 billion this year, and new property acquisition is likely to leap 37%, to $15 billion. "These companies will be hard-pressed to achieve these rates without more employees," says Herold Vice-President Aliza Fan.
