Careers In Petroleum Engineering What Do They Do? In a sense, petroleum engineers make the world run. They search the far corners of the earth to find and produce oil and gas supplies. They design oil wells, storage tanks, and transportation systems. They supervise the construction and operation of oil and gas fields. Petroleum engineers are researching new technologies to allow more oil and gas to be extracted from each well. They keep the energy flowing to light and heat our homes. They fuel our transportation systems and keep our industries operating. Economical and environmentally safe production of petroleum requires a wide spectrum of knowledge. Petroleum engineers also contribute to non-energy concerns such as underground waste disposal, ground water remediation, and hydrology. Examples of Work Projects
  • Consulting with geologists and contractors in Australia to design and supervise a drilling operation Developing new equipment to optimize oil and gas production Creating computer models to simulate oil well performance Lobbying for environmentally safe oil recovery processes

Near Sarnia, Ontario, 2001 Petroleum (from Latin petrus oleum mineral oil is a thick, dark brown or greenish flammable liquid, which, at certain points, exists in the upper strata of Earth's crust. It consists of a complex mixture of various hydrocarbons, largely of the methane series, but may vary much in appearance, composition, and properties. It can be shortened to the prefix petro- , as in "petrodiesel".

World Resources
The Department was established in the academic year 1394/1395 A.H. to become the first Petroleum Engineering Department in the Kingdom and the entire Gulf Region. Its establishment was a national response to the increasing demand for petroleum engineers in a country that has more than 25% of the total world oil reserves. This is the largest reserves in any single country of the world. A simple calculation shows that with the prevailing current oil production rate, this reserves will last for more than 100 years. This indicates that the oil industry will continue to play a leading role and to have the largest contribution to the economy. Based on these facts, it seems that, among other engineering and scientific disciplines, the petroleum engineers will have the most secure and guaranteed jobs in the future. Whenever an exploration team becomes confident about the existence of certain geological formations which contain oil or gas, petroleum engineers start designing and setting up a general plan for the drilling programs. Then they study the amount of oil and gas reserves and the optimum methods for oil and gas production at the minimum cost, and the best methods for preserving the energy of the reservoir, keeping in mind the special conditions of each reservoir. This requires the collaboration of drilling, reservoir and production engineers. And because of the need to acquire all these skills, basic sciences are interconnected with the specialized engineering sciences in an integrated program leading to B.Sc. degree in petroleum engineering.

General Information
Petroleum engineering majors receive a broad background in engineering and business as preparation for designing ways to find and extract minerals below the earth's surface, especially petroleum. Students also learn to design the systems used in oil and gas production. What the Major is Like Majors in petroleum engineering take approximately one year of course work in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and geology and one year of engineering sciences such as computer analysis methods, electronics, strength of materials, behavior of hydrocarbon fluids, flow of fluids, and flow of heat. This work gives students the basic problem-solving skills needed to tackle the technical challenges of modern engineering design. Included in the program is course work in the humanities and social sciences. In the junior and senior years, students take more specialized course work and laboratory work in such areas as well drilling, economic evaluation of mineral properties, mineral law, etc. At least one-half year of engineering design is included in advanced topics. The use of computers is integrated throughout the specialized course work.
