INFORMATION FOR CONSUMERS
FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION
CENTER FOR VETERINARY MEDICINE
INTERPRETING PET FOOD LABELS SPECIAL USE FOODS The following consumer information is provided by David A. Dzanis, DVM, Ph.D., DACVN. Treats and Chews Snacks and treats for pets are implicitly intended to be offered on an occasional basis, and by no means should be fed as the mainstay of the diet. Although pet treats must meet all the other FDA and state regulations for labeling of pet foods, they are exempt from the need to include an AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. "Biscuits" are not exempt, unless they are identified as a "snack" or "treat" as well. Regardless, some treats and biscuits are formulated to be nutritionally complete, and some are not. Dog chews made from rawhide, bone or other animal materials or parts (for example, pig ears) are still considered "food" under FDA law, since they are comprised of materials that are consumable by the pet. As long as the label for the chew does not include any reference to nutritional value (such as "high protein"), it may not have to follow the AAFCO pet food regulations. Thus, many labels for chews may not have a guaranteed analysis or follow the AAFCO rules for product names. However, they should still bear the information required under FDA regulations, such as the net quantity statement, the manufacturer's name and address, and the ingredient list (if it contains more than one ingredient or the single ingredient is not declared in the product name). For products sold in bulk, the required information should appear in a placard on the bin or container.

66. Food Pets Die For; A Book Excerpt
From the book, Food Pets Die For Shocking Facts About pet food. By Ann N. Martin. NewSage Press (1997). pet food labels can be deceiving.
http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.html
From the book, "Food Pets Die For: Shocking Facts About Pet Food." By Ann N. Martin. NewSage Press (1997). This book is on sale at Dr. Jeff's Homevet/Amazon.Com bookstore Television commercials and magazine advertisements for pet food would have us believe that the meats, grains, and fats used in these foods could grace our dining tables. Chicken, beef, lamb, whole grains, and quality fats are supposedly the composition of dog and cat food. In my opinion, when we purchase these bags and cans of commercial food, we are in most cases purchasing garbage. Unequivocally, I cannot state that all pet food falls into this category, but I have yet to find one that I could, in all good conscience, feed my dog or cats. Pet food labels can be deceiving. They only provide half the story. The other half of the story is hidden behind obscure ingredients listed on the labels. Bit by bit, over seven years, I have been able to unearth information about what is contained in most commercial pet food. At first I was shocked, but my shock turned to anger when I realized how little the consumer is told about the actual contents of the pet food. As discussed in Chapter Two, companion animals from clinics, pounds, and shelters can and are being rendered and used as sources of protein in pet food. Dead-stock removal operations play a major role in the pet food industry. Dead animals, road kill that cannot be buried at roadside, and in some cases, zoo animals, are picked up by these dead stock operations. When an animal dies in the field or is killed due to illness or disability, the dead stock operators pick them up and truck them to the receiving plant. There the dead animal is salvaged for meat or, depending on the state of decomposition, delivered to a rendering plant. At the receiving plants, the animals of value are skinned and viscera removed. Hides of cattle and calves are sold for tanning. The usable meat is removed from the carcass, and covered in charcoal to prevent it from being used for human consumption. Then the meat is frozen, and sold as animal food, which includes pet food.

68. Your Animal's Health -- With Dr. Wendell O. Belfield
Article by holistic vet Wendell Belfield, about disadvantages of commercial pet foods.
http://www.belfield.com/article3.html
Volume 3
W hich commercial pet food do I recommend? That's the one question I am asked most frequently in my practice. My standard answer is "none." But let me clarify. There is no government agency setting quality standards and guidelines, so there are no assurances of quality in pet food. I am certain at some time you have noticed a change in your dog after feeding him or her different batches of the same brand of pet food. Your pet may have diarrhea, increased flatulence, a dull hair coat, intermittent vomiting, or may scratch more often. These are the most common symptoms I have observed over the years, and they are all associated with commercial pet foods. In 1981 while Martin Zucker and I wrote the first of my two books, How to Have a Healthier Dog , we discovered the full extent of the negative effects of commercial pet foods of that time. Much more recently, San Francisco Chronicle staff writer John Eckhouse went even further with a two-part exposé entitled "Pet-Food Labels Baffle Consumers," and (a good candidate for a horror movie title) "How Dogs and Cats Get Recycled Into Pet Food." In the second article, published on February 19, 1990, Mr. Eckhouse, an investigative reporter, writes: "Each year, millions of dead American dogs and cats are processed along with billions of pounds of other animal materials by companies known as renderers. The finished products tallow and meat meals serve as raw materials for thousands of items that include cosmetics and pet food." There were the usual denials by pet food executives. Yet federal and state agencies, including the Food and Drug Administration and medical groups such as the American Veterinary Medical Association and the California Veterinary Medical Association, confirm that pets, on a routine basis, are rendered after they die in animal shelters or are disposed of by health authorities, and the end product frequently finds its way into pet food.

71. Natural Pet Food And Raw Meat Diets For Dogs And Cats
Natural pet food For Dogs and Cats and Why It Makes Sense To Consider The Topic. Natural pet food means different things to different people.
http://www.naturalpetfood.com/
Welcome to NaturalPetFood. com It's your choice... which will it be for your meat-eating dog or cat? Natural Pet Food For Dogs and Cats...
and Why It Makes Sense To Consider The Topic Natural pet food means different things to different people. There is much confusion today as to just what kind of food could or should be called " natural pet food ". Even veterinary specialists in nutrition do not agree on one, single definition. And AAFCO (the Association of American Feed Control Officials) is still struggling with the preferred definition. Does it mean that absolutely nothing can be done to or added to a food? Does it mean the food product was strictly organically grown or fed? (What does "organic" really mean?) Can a food product have other "natural" substances added such as flavor enhancers and still qualify as NATURAL? The dictionary gives us some clues but even the dictionary has multiple connotations for the term. So... you may have to rely on your own common sense to tell you which pet food fits the definition and which falls short of your concept. This website will help YOU to decide what makes sense when determining what foods to feed your dog or cat. Many pet owners want to feed as close to a natural diet as possible. Review this site... then you decide. FINALLY SOME ANSWERS... from PetFood Industry magazine:

Dog Foods and Treats Our world is becoming more complex as each day passes. Natural no longer has the same meaning as it once did, and with the current rules in listing ingredients, a "Natural Diet" could be filled with toxic chemicals.
Parmesan Herb Treats

For the Glaze - 1 egg, 1 tablespoon milk
Bake at 325
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Add stock, oil, cheese, drymilk, and herbs. Gradually blend in the flours and cracked wheat. Add enough wheat flour to form a stiff dough.
Transfer to a floured surface and knead until smooth (about 3-5 minutes). Shape the dough into a ball and roll to 1/2-inch (12 mm) thick. Using round or crescent-shaped cookie cutters, cut out treats. Place on ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 1/4-inch (6 mm) apart. Gather up the scraps, roll out again, and cut additional biscuits.
Bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk for the glaze. Brush the biscuits with glaze, turn and brush other side. Bake for an additional 30 minutes.

74. Feline Nutrition
Article by Dr. Margaret Muns on pet food marketing, the science of feline nutrition, guaranteed analysis, energy density, and ingredient list.
http://www.bestfriends.org/members/health/catnutr.htm
Practical Feline Nutrition By Margaret Muns DVM Choosing the correct cat food can be very difficult. There are a huge variety of choices available, all with different nutritional claims. Each pet food company and expert seems to have a different opinion about what the best food is for your cat. To make sense of all this confusion, cat owners and veterinarians need to wade through all the pet food marketing information and to rely on the science of pet nutrition. Pet Food Marketing All commercial cat foods are all sold as having complete and balanced nutritional value. However, most contain more fat and protein than is required. Pet food companies know that cats love high fat, high protein foods. Over nutrition and obesity have become the most common of cat nutritional disorders. Cost is an important marketing tool for the pet food industry. Foods that are low in cost are not necessarily nutritious. In general, using cheap, poor quality ingredients produces the lower cost foods. Pet food companies that produce cheap foods usually don't have adequate funding for proper testing of their product. Cheap, low quality cat foods generally have low energy densities. Consequently, cats must eat larger volumes to satisfy their need for calories. In the long run, cat owners end up buying more pet food than if they had been using a better food. The Science of Feline Nutrition The only accurate information about a particular cat food is on the label of the container or package. By understanding a few simple concepts, cat owners can accurately evaluate the label on any pet food. Anything found outside the product information panel should be ignored, because that information is used only for marketing purposes.

What's in your Pet's Food?
by Lisa Newman, Holistic Animal Care
What's in your pet's diet... and why should you care! You have probably heard the scary stories of feathers and beaks and "things" commonly found in pet foods... you may have experienced the pain and expense of caring for a chronically ill animal or may simply be waking up to the nutritional benefits to your own health and are wondering how this could also effect your animals. What ever your reasons, hopefully you will get out the ingredient list of what you are now feeding and compare these notes. In the last few years, holistic veterinarians and animal nutritionists have concluded that many of today's health problems from allergies to cancer, even behavioral problems, can stem from poor nutrition... and not the "table scraps", but the very prescription diets and premium foods highly recommended. It's a shame that you may be unknowingly creating the very problems that your animal has been suffering from! A good diet is fundamental...
