pet birds should be kept in a cage when the owners are absent but can be allowed free Improper feeding of pet birds is a major cause of illness
http://www.caringtogether.com/exotics/birds.html
Pet birds should be kept in a cage when the owners are absent but can be allowed free roam of the house when someone is at home to watch them. The owner should be aware of the many hazards in the home. These include but are not limited to the following: mirrors, glass windows and doors, house plants, electrical cords, pots on the stove, and items containing harmful chemicals. Free flying birds also tend to assume an aggressiveness toward people. All caged birds should have their wing feathers trimmed periodically. This makes life much safer for the bird. The procedure should be done by an experienced veterinarian or veterinary technician. The owner can be taught to do the procedure also. The claws and beak should be trimmed on a regular basis as well. Sandpaper perches do not keep the claws shortened but do tend to make the soles of the feet irritated. The claws can be trimmed by the owner as long as something is kept on hand to control any bleeding. The beak should be trimmed by a professional. Leg bands should be removed when the bird is first purchased. Most injuries to caged birds involve a banded leg. This procedure should be done only by an experienced professional.

9. Vitamin A Deficiency In Parrots And Other Birds
Describes the most common preventable avian disease, Vitamin A deficiency or hypovitaminosis A, which particularly affects pet birds that eat only seeds.
http://www.multiscope.com/hotspot/vitamina.htm
Dealing With Vitamin A Deficiency in Birds
by Hannis L. Stoddard, III, DVM
Vitamin A deficiency can be disastrous for your bird but it's preventable The most common preventable avian disease that we see at our practice is hypovitaminosis A, or vitamin A deficiency, with or without accompanying secondary infections. Pet birds that eat only seeds (especially sunflower seeds and peanuts) are most prone to this problem because an all-seed diet is low in vitamin A. When vitamin A deficiency occurs, the cells that line the respiratory, reproductive and digestive tracts undergo structural change, making them unable to secrete mucous. Since mucous acts as a protective blanket to prevent invasion from pathogens (disease- causing agents), vitamin A deficiency allows environmental bacteria and other microorganisms to penetrate the mucous membrane barrier and set up "housekeeping" within these tissues. Symptoms of vitamin A deficiency depend on which organ system is affected (for instance the reproductive, digestive, or respiratory tracts) and which microorganism or combination of microorganisms is invading the patient. The respiratory system is the most often affected. Since the mouth and sinus are also lined by the cells that are compromised, you need only look inside the bird's mouth to see the early signs of this deficiency. Initially, you see small white plaques on the roof of the mouth and/or at the base of the tongue. The plaques ultimately become infected, forming large, obvious abscesses. The abscesses can distort the glottis (opening of the windpipe), causing labored breathing and eventually mechanical suffocation. The abscesses can even grow so large that they block the choana (the slit in the roof of the mouth). When this happens, the bird will exhibit profuse nasal discharge and obvious swelling around the eyes. The pain from these pockets of infection will eventually cause the bird to starve. The microorganisms can also spread throughout the bird's body with disastrous consequences.

    THE KITCHEN PHYSICIAN V
    Herbal Remedies For Parrots
    by Carolyn Swicegood
Herbal medicine was early man's first line of defense against the many ills and accidents that plagued him. Ancient humans learned from the observation of animals, including birds, how to use leaves, earth, mud and water to make soothing applications. Although the methods were crude, several of today's medicines are based upon sources as simple as those of ancient man. Presently, the use of herbs as self-prescribed medication is growing rapidly in the United States. It is an industry with more than $1.5 billion in annual sales. Medicinal herbs are the same natural plant drugs that have been used since antiquity. They remain the only form of medicine for a large majority of the world's population that lacks access to hospitals and pharmacies. Some of the popular herbal remedies for people are: HERBAL TREATMENTS FOR PARROTS
Years ago, only the most experimental-minded of birdkeepers used herbs, because there were no guidelines for their use, nor had dosages for them been determined. As we realized that the potential for harm to our birds by herbal remedies was somewhat less than that of pharmaceuticals, we began to establish dosages by starting with minute amounts and increasing gradually to the optimal level. When using the milder herbs, one might use the method of establishing the correct dosage for a human infant of about ten pounds, and use one tenth the amount for a parrot weighing approximately one pound.

Holisitic Avian Health
Stress, pollution, prescription drugs, the overuse of antibiotics and a poor diet all contribute to the ill health of our birds. Good nutrition is the single most important factor in determining the health, vitality and longevity of our parrots. Because we have taken them from their natural environment, and because they are unable to forage and choose their own foods, it is imperative that we provide them a nutritionally complete diet. "For a little over a decade, many bird owners have relied upon what is called a 'complete' and 'nutritionally-balanced' manufactured pelleted diet. Feeding a synthetic commercial feed has been touted as the 'best' or 'better' way to feed your bird and as a result has convinced the public at large that it is true. Sadly, our birds are the victims of these pretenses. Bird owners are now beginning to question the true value of these commercial diets, realizing that they are a far cry from resembling anything our birds are accustomed to eating in the wild." Smuggled Birds: A Threat to America's
Caged Bird and Poultry Industries
May 1998
Veterinary Services Every year, around 25,000 birds are smuggled into the United States. Most of them are brought in during the hatching season for wild birds, from the beginning of January through mid-May. Most of the birds originate from Central America, South America, and Mexico. Smuggled birds that don't die from illness or stress are often disease carriers. Most of these birds are the popular hookbilled variety that have been called timebombs of diseaseand rightly so! While many show no symptoms, they often carry the contagious virus that causes exotic Newcastle disease. U.S. poultry and caged birds are extremely vulnerable to this virus; if contracted by just one bird, the disease spreads rapidly to others, then from location to location. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) regulates the importation of birds to keep this costly disease out of the United States. Pet Bird Popularity in the United States Experts believe that 15 percent of U.S. households now include pet birds. In 1974, about 28,000 birds entered the country in legal commercial shipments; by fiscal year 1984, that number had risen to almost 742,000. For each of the past 3 years, about 140,000 birds were imported.

1. PRE-PURCHASE INFORMATION back
Owning a bird as a pet has been popular since the Victorian era, when the parlor was not considered completely decorated unless it had a canary in a very small brass cage residing on a table in a corner. It has been only recently, however, that the health and management of pet birds has become a real concern of the pet bird breeder, owner and Veterinarian. Pet birds are no longer maintained in overly small, ornate cages that do not allow for social contact. Large bright airy cages, along with improved dietary management, have increased the life-span and reproductive efficiency of most of the pet bird species.
Birds can be purchased from a variety of sources, such as pet shops, breeders, private dealers, or individuals. If you are buying a bird for the first time it is almost essential that you purchase your bird from someone who is in the bird breeding and/or selling business. These individuals usually have a reputation to protect; ask around and find out who in your area is known to deal honestly and fairly with buyers. Many stores today, especially those specializing in birds, have been operated by bird fanciers who have turned their hobby into a business; they usually know and care about their birds. They will have in stock items required for basic care and maintenance of birds, such as play toys, cages, bird feed and general health supplies. Sales personnel will generally offer you more information than you ever thought necessary to get you started, so leave yourself plenty of time to shop!

To me, it looks like an awfully difficult ritual, but he loves it, and prefers taking baths this way to getting them from the spray bottle. Maybe I'll try pouring my water glass over me and see what I'm missing. ;-) Will this bird make a great programmer or what! Look at Chilipepper go for the Dr. Pepper.
