MASTERS DEGREE IN INTEGRATED PEST AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT Magister Scientiae COURSE OBJECTIVE: To produce professional scientists that are specifically qualified to provide biological expertise in the fields of crop pest and disease management. COURSE ORGANIZATION: This degree consists of a coursework and a research project component. The coursework of four prescribed modules is spread over seven months and the research project over five months. The duration of the entire degree is thus one year. COURSEWORK CURRICULUM: Applied insect and plant disease ecology An ecological approach to pest and disease management is vital. This module therefore has two components: insect ecology and disease ecology. Topics covered include: Insect ecology: Traditional and novel approaches to the study of population dynamics; the population regulation debate; the ecology, life history and phylogeny of outbreak and nonoutbreak species; hypotheses on plant-herbivore interactions; interspecific interactions in disturbed environments; diversity and stability. Biological control This module addresses the biological control of insects, plant diseases and weeds in South Africa, highlighting methods and procedures, and past successes and failures in the field.

Pest Reporting
Why the Concern About Forest Pests? Insects and plant diseases are found around the World. They have evolved in a variety of different habitats, including the temperate forests of North America. Within forest ecosystems they serve a variety of functions, ranging from the pollination of plants to the decomposition of trees. Worldwide an estimated 787 643 species have been identified. In our Canadian forests approximately 55 000 different insect species have been recorded. Of these, very few are considered to be major forest pests. So why should we be concerned about them? Despite being few in number, historically, outbreaks of these major pests have resulted in extensive tree mortality and growth loss. By way of example, repeated defoliation by the spruce budworm in New Brunswick from 1981 to 1983

2.3.3. Effect of Human-Induced LULUCF Activities versus Other Influences on Carbon Stocks
This section describes the range of factors that can affect terrestrial carbon stocks. It focuses on the relationship between human-induced LULUCF activities and other factors. Section 2.3.4 discusses a range of options for addressing these factors in the accounting system.
2.3.3.1. Natural versus Human-Induced
Terrestrial ecosystems are dynamic. Carbon stocks change over the full range of time and space scales, for many different reasons. Although carbon stock changes can be measured directly with a variety of techniques (see Section 2.4 ), attributing a given change in carbon stocks to a particular cause can be much more challenging. Yet identifying the reason for a change in carbon stocks may be crucial to determining whether it should be included in the Kyoto accounting system, for two reasons. First, stock changes that are part of a natural cycle will not have a long-term effect on climate if increases during one period or at one location are offset by decreases at another time or place (recognizing that the 5-year commitment period defined by the Kyoto Protocol samples a period that is short compared to many natural cycles of disturbance and recovery). Second, policymakers may decide that stock changes from certain causes should not be credited or debited because doing so would be at odds with the underlying objectives of the Kyoto Protocol.

Various insects and disease services are available to landowners in the state of Georgia. A statewide aerial survey(s) is conducted each year for the detection of various forest pests. During the survey, areas of dead and dying trees are noted on aerial photographs so they can be ground checked by GFC foresters. Pests often discovered are pine bark beetles, chemical pollution, and damage caused by tornadoes, hail, and flooding. Historical files are maintained on each pest and the amount of damage caused by each occurrence is recorded. Landowners who are impacted by these forest pests as detected by these aerial surveys, are notified by GFC foresters or rangers of these forest pest problems on their land. They are also given instruction and direction on how to combat these pests.
Some of the more prevalent forest pests in Georgia include pine bark beetles, fusiform rust on pines, hypoxylon canker of hardwoods and many types of defoliators.
