The Forest Health Protection staff consists of entomologists, pathologists, foresters, other forest health specialists and technicians who have specialized skills and experience in insect and disease diagnosis, management, pesticide use and management, and knowledge about broader forest health concepts, conditions, and trends. We help people understand the effects various agents have on their forests, the alternatives they have to influence those effects, and ways that treatments can be integrated to meet multiple objectives. Services are provided through two regional programs and four field offices. What does FHP do?

This FRIM programme provides an increasingly important role with respect to working environment and management of FRIM resources, as well as providing the essential interface between research and technology transfer to stakeholders.
Library services
Access to relevant and up to-date information is essential for achievement of a sound socio-economic development. FRIM Library is a focal point for forestry science information in Malawi. Its mandate is to provide up to-date and timely forestry information to forestry research scientists and the public with interest in forestry and environmental sciences. FRIM subscribes to about 25 forest science journals and receives several regular free publications. There is no regular budget for the purchase of books, but largely depends on donations from various donor agencies. FRIM is a beneficiary of the African-Caribbean Literature Service which facilitates access to published information for African and Caribbean research scientists. Through this FRIM scientists are able to request for relevant articles from the search profiles generated by CTA. Considerable investment has been made in library facilities and training in information retrieval. The following computerised databases are available:

PATHOLOGY, PESTS AND DISEASES The underlying research theme of the Entomology and Plant Pathology Department is the integrated management of pests and diseases of perennial crops which includes pest and disease detection and diagnosis, epidemiology, pathogen biology and molecular typing and disease control of perennial horticultural crops. With the exception of research programmes on bacterial canker and fungal diseases of Prunus, most of this research is applied to fruit trees and perennial herbaceous crops. Nevertheless, this expertise is directly applicable to forest trees.
  • Bacterial, fungal and viral pathogens : Bacterial Canker of cherry: biology, epidemiology, molecular finger printing, resistance (MAFF programme); the fungal programme includes molecular detection, quantitative epidemiology, control and modelling of fungal diseases on perennial crops. Work on leaf spots and fungal die back of cherry is augmented by major research programmes on fungal canker and Verticillium . Detection, characterisation and epidemiology of viruses of fruit crops.

Background Australia's native forests occupy about 40 million hectares and are managed for a wide range of values. While wood production from plantations is growing rapidly, native forests remain a major source of industrial wood. The focus of forest operations is shifting from harvesting mature stands to managing regrowth for sustained production. CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products, in collaboration with State forest management agencies, has made important contributions to enhancing productivity and the value of the harvested wood while ensuring protection of water, soil and other environmental values. Researchers in the Portfolio, in collaboration with forest managers, are investigating methods for increasing the productivity of regrowth forests, minimising the adverse impacts of harvesting operations, and reducing the risk of fire and disease. A major goal is to develop techniques for monitoring the status of forests and how this is affected by management. These methods will provide the basis for continually improving forest practices and for measuring progress towards ecologically sustainable forest management. How can we help?

Statement of Programs and Library Needs: The Department of Forestry and the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products, located in the College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources, offer programs leading to the B.S., M.S., M.F. (Master of Forestry, a professional, non-research degree), and Ph.D. degrees. Areas of specialization in the Department of Forestry involve all aspects of forestry, including silviculture; management and conservation of forest resources; production; genetics; mensuration; disease and pest control; acid rain effects; harvesting methods; forest biometrics; and soils. Remote sensing and geographic information systems are also important. The department is actively involved in international research and extension service. Research in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products is focused on assisting the forest products industry with solving its problems and developing new cost-effective methods for the conversion of wood to consumer products. In addition, researchers in the department also focus on gaining a better understanding of wood as a material and the behavior of wood in service and processing. The department has several research/testing facilities, including the Pallet and Container Research Laboratory, the Biobased Materials/Recycling Center, and the Center for Forest Products Marketing. The department is actively involved in extension service.

The Forest Health Protection (FHP) unit is concerned about both preventing and treating forest tree problems on 16.0 million acres of state, private, industrial and county forest lands. The staff provides insect and disease management assistance to land managers as well as integrated pest management (IPM) programs and hazardous tree education. To anticipate future problems and identify current trends, Forest Health Protection personnel participate in programs such as the national Forest Health Monitoring program . They also work with the University of Wisconsin and USDA Forest Service Researchers, along with Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association.
    Wisconsin Forests and Their Health
Our forests are generally in good health, though problems do exist in certain types. About 34% of the 16 million acres of commercial forest are in the maple-basswood type. This cover type is of a relatively young age and is in very good health, though the basswoods have been declining in some locations. The aspen-birch type makes up 20% of the commercial forest land but is decreasing at a rapid rate as older stands convert to maple and balsam fir. The oak-hickory type makes up about 17% of the commercial forest land. This acreage has increased slightly, but many of the older stands are overmature and are converting to more shade tolerant types. The conifers and the other hardwood types are in generally good health.

    Environmental Management
Protecting other resources while conducting forest management activities is what good stewardship is all about. Federal and state laws require that water quality and endangered species be protected. Best Management Practices (BMPs) are designed to minimize the impact of forestry practices and related activities on water quality and other functions and values. Recommendations by Commission foresters will assist and encourage landowners to comply with these voluntary and non-voluntary regulations so that these resources are protected.
    Urban and Community Forestry
Urban Foresters with the South Carolina Forestry Commission are available to assist communities, non-profit volunteer organizations, schools, individuals and others with information, training and technical assistance related to the establishment and management of trees in urban areas of South Carolina.

DISEASES Hypoxylon Canker The effects of the severe droughts in 1998 and 1999 are still being felt in the East Texas area. One effect appears to be an increased incidence of Hypoxylon canker on hardwoods. This article summarizes the identification and management of this hardwood disease. Hypoxylon cankers are common throughout the South on oaks and other hardwoods where they normally occur on stressed hosts. This disease should not be confused with Hypoxylon canker of aspen, which is caused by a different fungus. The canker is caused by one or more species of fungi in the genus Hypoxylon . Found in the outer-bark areas of living and healthy trees, the fungus is normally of little consequence. However, it can severely injure or kill trees weakened by factors such as drought, root disease, mechanical injury, logging, or construction activities. These agents of stress enable the fungus to move into the xylem and produce cankers on the branches and trunk. Apparently, the fungus is activated by reduced moisture in the xylem and bark. Once this low-moisture threshold is reached, the fungus quickly spreads. Especially in droughty areas, Hypoxylon
