History By far, Peru is the richest archaeological country in South America. Remains of archaeological sites are dispersed by all sides, especially in the coast and highlands. Weather conditions have made possible the good preservation of these sites. Reed huts, stone-piled rooms, painted caves, mud cities, stoned fortress and trails, are some of the different buildings we encounter in our exciting trip along Peru. This ancient land, which date from more than 20,000 years, is the "mecca" of archaeologists and historians. Although pre-columbian people never left us written sources; ceramics, textiles and metalwork designs have greatly helped scientists to know more about their culture, as well as the chronicles written after the conquest of the fabulous Inca Empire. Pre-Inca The oldest remains of human presence (nomadic hunter-gatherers) have been found in the Piquimachay cave (Ayacucho) with a date of 20,000-10,000 BC between its different settlements. Other sites of this stage are Chivateros, Guitarrero, Cupisnique, Lauricocha and Toquepala; places with caves paintings, stone tools and plant seeds. The starting point of agriculture was by 4,000-5,000 BC with crops of cotton, beans, corn, chili and squash. Since 1,300 BC advanced cultures appeared, such as Chavín, Paracas, Mochica, Nazca, Tiahuanaco, Wari and the regional states of Chimú, Chincha and Chanka. This period lasted until the 15th century where the Inca Empire reached its highest expansion. Inca Having Qosqo (Cusco) as its capital, the Tahuantinsuyu (Inca Empire) expanded till the areas of actual Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile. Pachacútec, the ninth Inca, was a great conqueror and builder. Most of his work is visible nowadays. After a century of life, the Tahuantinsuyu reached its end when Huáscar and Atahualpa made a civil war for being the successor of their Inca father Huayna Cápac. By this time (1532), Pizarro, the spanish conqueror, returned to Peru and took advantage of the situation. He captured, deceived and executed Atahualpa. Although, Inca´s people resisted for nearly 40 years, Spaniards finally defeated and put and end to Inca Empire.

History
Little is known of the history of the region comprising present-day Peru before the rise of the Incas. The earlier settlers were people unrelated tothe Incas. Possibly they began to migrate from Central America. Some aspects of the history and culture of the pre-Inca Indian people have been determined from the surviving examples of their art and architecture.

What goes for Peru goes for all of the Americas: it has never been proven where the original inhabitants, known as Indians, originate from. Although the most common theory is that they migrated from Siberia to Alaska, andfrom there spreaded across the continent, there are recent excavations inBrazil which are much older then the migration was supposed to have happened.

represented, this book brings together an astonishing range of primary texts to introduce readers to the cultural and political history of what is now peru.
http://garnet.berkeley.edu/~dolorier/Reader/Reader.html
The PERU READER Sixteenth-century Spanish soldiers described it as a land filled with gold and silver, a land of untold wealth. To the Europeans who heard these stories it was a place of tantalizing mystery that mirrored dreams and desires unsatisfied by the Old World. Nineteenth-century travelers wrote of soaring Andean peaks plunging into luxuriant Amazonian canyons of orchids, pythons, and jaguars. Early twentieth-century adventurer Hiram Bingham told of the raging rivers and the wild jungles he traversed on his way to "discover" the "Lost City of the Incas," Machu Picchu. The richest treasures, the bloodiest conquest, the most poignant ballads, the most violent revolutionariesall have been attributed to Peru.
Unparalleled in its scope, comprehensive, and written for the traveler and specialist alike, The Peru Reader
"This is an extremely deep, broad and insightful collection on Peru." Jorge Castaneda Newsweek columnist and author of Utopia Unarmed: The Latin American Left after the Cold War
"A livelier, more literate introduction to a foreign world could not be hoped for. A Peruvian trove, indeed; so much that one hardly knows where to begin dipping into its treasures."

89. History - PERU
Evidence of settlement in peru dates back thousands of years but, except for some scattered ruins, little is known of these early peoples.
http://www.hotlink.com.br/users/cnonone/hist.htm
Evidence of settlement in Peru dates back thousands of years but, except for some scattered ruins, little is known of these early peoples. In about 1250 BC groups such as the Chavín, Chimú, Nazca, and Tiahuanaco migrated into the region from the north. The Chimú built the city of Chanchan about AD 1000, ruins of which remain today.
Inca Empire
The Inca, sometimes called peoples of the sun, were originally a warlike tribe living in a semiarid region of the southern sierra. From 1100 to 1300 the Inca moved north into the fertile Cuzco Valley. From there they overran the neighboring lands. By 1500 the Inca empire stretched from the Pacific Ocean east to the sources of the Paraguay and Amazon rivers and from the region of modern Quito in Ecuador south to the Maule River in Chile. This vast empire was a theocracy, organized along socialistic lines and ruled by an Inca, or emperor, who was worshiped as a divinity. Because the Inca realm contained extensive deposits of gold and silver, it became in the early 16th century a target of Spanish imperial ambitions in the New World.
Spanish Rule
In 1532 the Spanish soldier and adventurer Francisco Pizarro landed in Peru with a force of about 180 men. By guile and by force of arms Pizarro made the Inca Empire a Spanish possession. In 1535 Pizarro founded on the banks of the Rímac River the Peruvian capital city of Ciudad de los Reyes (Spanish for "City of the Kings"; present-day Lima). Subsequently, disputes over jurisdictional powers broke out among the Spanish conquerors, or conquistadors, and in 1541 a member of one of the conflicting Spanish factions assassinated Pizarro in Lima.

History
The first Peruvians were descendants of the nomadic tribes which had crossed into the Americas during the last Ice Age (40,000-15,000 BC), when a combination of ice packs and low sea levels exposed a neck of solid "land" to span what's now the Bering Strait. Following herds of game animals from Siberia into what must have been a relative paradise of fertile coast, wild forest, mountain and savannah, successive generations continued south through Central America. Some made their way down along the Andes, into the Amazon, and out onto the more fertile areas of the Peruvian and Ecuadorian coast, while others found their niches en route. In a number of tribes there seem to be cultural memories of these long migrations, encapsulated in their traditional mythologies - though these aren't really transcribable into written histories. There is, however, archeological evidence of human occupation in Peru dating back to around 15,000-20,000 BC, concentrated in the

Northern Region Central Region Southern Region ... Return to South America Revised: 16 Dec 2003 Information Few places on earth have as rich a natural heritage as Peru. Its archeological treasures are unearthed each day reflecting many of the oldest and some of the most cultured civilizations which existed long before Christ. The local cultures could fuse metals in a plating process before the new testament was written, tamed the llama and irrigated crops more than 6,000 years ago.  This country’s wonders don’t stop with its cultural accomplishments, they only begin with them for many of Peru’s greatest treasures are found within its complex environmental structure. It has 1701 known species of birds which is more than 50% of all the birds found within the neotropics, a region 25 times larger. 1347 species of orchids in 167 genera are known to grow in Peru and more than sixty are awaiting classification and verification. More than half of the orchids are found in eight of its departments and six of those same regions are home to more than 50% of the endemic species.  To try and experience Peru is so large a scope that it's difficult to define what the highlights are as a generalized statement. It's probably more important to look at a cross section of attractions and experiences that are both popular and can be seen within the context of published tour formats. From the standpoint of popularity the most obvious attractions are Machu Picchu, Paracas, Nazca, Colca Canyon, Iquitos, Pulcalpa, Cuzco, Lima and the Manu.

    Change in Peru
TOPLINE: After a decade of authoritarian rule by Alberto Fujimori, Peruvians will finally select a new president on Sunday. A runoff election pits against each other the two candidates who survived a five-candidate vote in April former President Alan Garcia and opposition leader Alejandro Toledo. IN CONTEXT: Garcia returned from exile in January just after corruption charges against him expired and launched a campaign to regain the Peruvian presidency, a position he held from 1985 until 1990. Garcia left office after his economic policies had driven Peru's annual inflation rate to an astonishing 7,600 percent. The silver-tongued Garcia, once compared to former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, threw himself into a race that most observers expected to boil down to former Congresswoman Lourdes Flores and economist Toledo, an Andean Indian who forced then-President Fujimori who succeeded Garcia into a runoff last year. KEY QUESTIONS KEY PLAYERS BOTTOM LINE PROFILES Alejandro Toledo Alan Garcia ELECTION WATCH Peruvian presidential election Toledo withdrew from the runoff, claiming the election was rigged, and Fujimori, running unopposed, was re-elected.
