        Geography of Peru
Peru is divided into three regions. Although this simple division is a fair portrait of Peru's geography, the reality is much richer and far more complex: in Peru nature appears to have taken on characteristics which have turned its mountains, plains, jungles and valleys into unique habitats. An extraordinary variety of eco-systems shelters a wide diversity of plants and animals. The Highlands The Highlands of Peru are a mountainous area dominated by the Andes, where Mount Huascaran soars to 6,768 meters. In the Peruvian highlands, there are two well-defined seasons: the dry season (from April to October), marked by sunny days, cold nights and the lack of rain (the ideal time for visiting); and the rainy season (November to March), when there are frequent rain showers. The Coast The coast of Peru features deserts, beautiful beaches and fertile valleys. The Peruvian coastline is formed by a long snaking desert hemmed in between the sea and the mountains. The Andes to the east and the cold Humboldt Current that runs along the coast are what make this area so arid. From the Sechura desert to the Nazca plains and the Atacama Desert, the dry coastal terrain is occasionally split by valleys covered by a thick layer of cloud and drizzle in the winter.

A Geography Lesson
The Andes are the dominating feature of Peru. There are few places like it in the world: the Himilayas, the Alps and the Caucasus. This land mass shapes history and the future. Man is challenged to survive in this environment. The Andes rise 6,000 meter or 19,700 feet above sea level, separating the Pacific Ocean and the Amazon jungle basin. From the depths of the Peru-Chile trench just off the Peruvian coast to the Andean peaks is a difference in altitude of more than 40,000 feet within a distance of 50 miles. The chilly currents of the Pacific Ocean that flow out of the Peru-Chile Trench supercharges the coastal air with humidity, inhibiting rainfall. At most, a low, soupy overcasting covers the coast for six months a year. It makes Lima a depressing place. altiplano economy.

The images that immediately spring to mind are Incas and llamas, women wearing skirts with layers of petticoats and incongruous bowler hats, boys herding llamas high in the Andes, rosy faced children in alpaca hats, traditional reed islands on Lake Titicaca, shaman images of the jaguar, caiman and anaconda, the mysterious Nazca lines in the coastal desert, the tropical steamy Amazon rainforest, and the impressive Inca fortresses and towns, such as Macchu Picchu and Cuzco, where traditional festivals to the sun are still practised. If you're a culture buff then you can dance to anything in Peru from Latino pop beats, to samba, to huayno, the dance of the traditional folklorico whilst listening to panpipes, charangos (like guitars) and drums. For those interested in archaeology, many ruins, pottery and artwork can be seen from ancient cultures predating the Incas. Peruvians are lively, friendly people who embrace strangers with hospitality. Whether you want to travel and trek, met people of a different culture or learn Spanish, Peru will be a fascinating and stimulating country.

Peru is located in the Southern Hemisphere, with 6.940 km of borders ( Bolivia Brazil Chile Colombia and Ecuador ). Its total area, including its islands on the Pacific Ocean and on the Titicaca lake is 1.285.216 sq. km. (2.5 times France ); with a coast line of 3.079,5 km and a maritime domain of 200 miles along the coast. Its relief is complete and varied but it isn't showed on the coast, on the mountain plains or on the Andean tops, down the valley of the upper forest and on the huge Amazon plain. It has also large contrasts, with a very uneven topographical relief on the Andean slopes; on the high mountain areas that exceed the Altiplano (covered or not with eternal glaciers snow); and on the abrupt geography of the area before the forest.

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). Choose a new childcare program in Peru! Children in all countries of the world are precious. But those who must overcome great odds hold a special place in most people's hearts, it's agreed.
On the streets of Lima, Peru, homeless children seek shelter. Others suffer in unimaginable conditions amongst disease, crime and oppression. In some "shantytowns," entire families live in 10 x 10 foot adobe, thatched, and wooden dwellings. The economic poverty is not only visible, it's pervasive.
Today, Lima is home for some of the world's most economically impoverished children and families. But, there are loving and safe "homes" that give poor children a chance for a promising future. Global Volunteers offers you a rare opportunity to be of genuine service to these "at-risk" children, while immersing yourself in a complex and colorful culture.

Geography Peru is a very geographically diverse country.  Covering 1,285,215 sq km (496,225 sq mi), it has three distinct geographic areas running roughly parallel to each other:  The Coastal Desert, the Mountains and the Jungle. The dry coast rises quickly to the Andes mountain range and then drops to the rain forest containing the headwaters of the Amazon River. Peru's coastal desert area accounts for most of the country's economic activity.   The Pan American highway runs through it and connects the major cities where 70% of Peruvians live.   The sierra (mountainous areas) contributes the lands for the agricultural sector.  The Amazon rain forest, also known as the selva, is twice the size of the rest of Peru, and it has no roads as we know them, but the people who live there use the waterways as roads Peru is the third largest country in South America.  It is over 2,613 km by road from the border with Ecuador in the north to the border with Chile in the south (over 1,622 miles).

Dozens of Inca Mummies Discovered Buried in Peru John Roach
    for National Geographic News
March 11, 2004 Dozens of exquisitely preserved Inca mummies are being recovered from a barren hillside on the outskirts of Peru's bustling capital city, Lima. In a matter of months a highway will roar past the ancient cemetery. "By now we have over 40 [mummy bundles] and the number increases every day," said Guillermo Cock, a Lima-based archaeologist. Cock and his team were contracted by the city government to comb the hillside for any unknown archaeological remains prior to construction of the road, which is the final phase of a project to ease traffic congestion in Lima. Read the full Working on the outskirts of Lima, Peru, archaeologists have unearthed scores of Inca mummies in an ancient cemetery.
