The Research Problem
Early in 1991 a number of cases of Cholera were reported in coastal areas of Peru. Within a few weeks, the disease spread throughout Peru and into other countries in South, Central and North America. The goal of this project is to map the spread of Cholera through Peru during the January 1991 epidemic. We know that Cholera is a disease associated with poverty and that, given adequate sanitation and access to medical care, the disease is not a major health threat.
Introduction to Medical Geography
Medical geography uses the concepts and techniques of the discipline of geography to investigate health-related topics. One of the predominant concepts of geography as a science is that it examines relationships between peoples and their environments in holistic terms. In the particular subfield of medical geography the focus is upon those interactions that bear specifically upon human health within a variety of cultural systems and a diverse biosphere. Regarding geographic method, the main tool is spatial analysis. Where disease occurs is a matter of importance. The map to the left illustrates the spread of an influenza epidemic in Glasgow. Comparison of disease rates in different places may provide clues to causation or serve as a starting point for further investigation. Maps showing distributional patterns of health-related phenomena with their accompanying associative analyses bring insight and strategy for better public health.

, the coastal area, is semi-arid to arid. It stretches the Pacific coastline from north to south. Most parts, except for the entire north, consist of desert ,and rainfall is very low in this area. However, many rivers from the Andesflow through the region towards the Pacific, thus creating fertile rivervalleys. The capital Lima is situated inthe coastal area.

HOME Machu Picchu Nazca and Paracas Lake Titicaca Peru LAND OF THE INCAS Peru in South America is a fascinating country. Geographically, Peru encompasses an arid coastal desert, the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Andes, and steamy rainforests that form part of the vast Amazon basin. Historically, the region has seen the development of cultures such as the Inca whose legacies remain to mystify travelers and archaeologists to this day. The Inca culture was the last to arise in Peru before the arrival of adventurers and plunderers from overseas... Rise and fall of the Incas In the fifteenth century, the Inca state began to expand under the rule of the emperor Pachacuti. Other cultures were conquered and assimilated to create the most powerful empire in the New World. At its peak the Inca empire stretched for 5500 kilometers from what is now southern Columbia down through Peru to central Chile. Many descendants of the Incas still live in the Peru highlands. The Incas built the staggering citadel of Machu Picchu in a dramatic mountain setting. Machu Picchu survives as the most famous legacy of the fated Inca empire.

Peru is one of the larger South American countries - some ten times the size of England - covering an area of 1,285,000 square kilometres and with a population of over 26 million. Around seventy percent of its inhabitants live in cities, which are mainly located along the coast and limited almost exclusively to half a dozen thin but relatively fertile river valleys running into the Pacific. Peru is unique in possessing such a wide variety of ecosystems
ranging from the dryest hot desert in the Americas, to the high Andean peaks (over 7600m above sea level); from a two- thousand-kilometre-long belt of cloud forest, rich in flora and fauna, to a vast area of lowland Amazon jungle, covering about half the country. The three main zones of Peru are known as
