Culture
Art prior to Spanish colonization concentrated almost entirely upon the production of fine pottery, metalwork, stonecraft and textiles. The Spanish subsequently introduced their version of urban planning, with cities laid out in checkerboard fashion, and constructed mansions, churches and monasteries which slavishly mimicked Spanish renaissance or the rather phlegmatic Spanish early baroque. Over time, these European styles increasingly showed signs of a native Indian influence, leading to a style known as mestizo . (The best examples of mestizo architecture can be found in the churches around Puno and Arequipa.) Painting too mimicked European influences but as local artists grew more confident, a new and distinctive Cuzco style developed, in which artists turned their attention away from the visible world, and concentrated instead on fairytale and fable. The influence of these works on artist Paul Gauguin, who spent his childhood in Lima, is noticeable. Peruvian music is almost entirely folk music, while its literature encompasses everything from independence-inspired polemic to the anarchic individualism of its many poets and the boyhood reveries of the internationally renowned author Mario Vargas Llosa.

Peru People and Preserved Culture.
Since pre-Columbian times Peruvians have been divided by nature. From the arid deserts of the coast, the Andean Sierra rises up to 19,700 feet. The highlands comprise about a quarter of Peru's territory, but are home to about half of Peru's population. This mountain mass poses major problems for development and integration into a single society. The result is dramatic regional diversity, and considerable inequalities in services and living standards. Health, education and law enforcement programs are unevenly distributed across Peru. At first sight, Peruvian culture may seem brutally divided between indigenous and colonial societies - the mountains and the city. Elite white creoles trace their bloodlines back to the Spanish Conquest in 1536. Like generations before them, most live in Lima, where a European visitor will feel a comfortable familiarity in the cafes and supermarkets.
On the other side, rural communities now also aspire to ownership of televisions and blue jeans but this comes into conflict with their traditional cultural values. The people of the Andes are maintaining the traditional practices of their ancestors in a rapidly changing world. Their livelihood continues to be based on family-owned fields or charkas which are farmed by hand or with the assistance of draft animals.

FOLK ART IN PERU
P eru boasts one of the largest varieties of arts and crafts on Earth, as can be seen from the growing network of exporters who each year exhibit the skill of Peruvian craftsmen in Europe, Asia and North America. The diversity, color, creativity and multiple functions of Peru's folk art has made it a fundamental activity not just for Peru's cultural identity, but also as a way of life for thousands of families and even entire communities, such as Sarhua and Quinua in Ayacucho.
W
T he excellence of Peruvian artisans can be seen in the harmony of the geometric designs in weavings, the minute portraits of peasant farming life on the carved gourds called mates burilados, the cultural mestizaje or blend in the colorful retablo boxed scenes. There are also the finely carved Huamanga stone sculptures, the complex Baroque nature of the wooden carvings, the beauty of gold and silver relics and the many forms that pottery has shaped the clay into pottery.
T hese works are just some of the cultural manifestations of a people who communicate mainly through art, using a language whose fundamental aspects are abundance, fertility and confidence in the future.

Peru History
Before the Inca empire, many civilizations flourished in Peru. The Moche culture (noted for exceptionally fine pottery), the Nazca culture (which made huge drawings in the desert) and the Chimu Kingdom (with its large adobe cities) are but three examples. It is the Incas, however, whose civilization is best known - their empire, though short-lived, covered the South American Andes from modern-day Colombia to Chile. Their lands were held together by an extensive network of roads, traversed by imperial messengers bearing quipus , or knotted-string messages. The empire was incredibly skillful in its use of dry masonry, irrigation and terraces. The city of Machu Picchu - made of large stones interlocked like fingers with no mortar used - attests to the technical and aesthetic mastery of this Amerindian empire.

Destination: Peru Introduction to Peru Peru is drama. From the rugged terrain of the Andes mountains, to the colorful festivals of the descendants of the Inca, to the overwhelming variety of flora and fauna, Peru demands a visitor's full attention. The Spanish may have conquered Peru in the 1500's, but the traditions and beliefs of its proud people, dating back thousands of years, continue to
exist today. Geography
'Extreme geography' - this would be an appropriate term for Peru's wildly varied and sometimes very harsh terrain. From coastal desert stretching north and south from Lima, to ice covered, inhospitable peaks in the Cordillera Blanca, to steamy Amazonian jungles, Peru has it all! Cusco and the surrounding sacred valley, where CULTURE XPLORERS groups will spend most of our time, has an altitude of roughly 11,000 - 12,000 feet, making it moderate to warm during the day, cold at night and changeable at any time!

I once read that cats look down upon humans, considering us inferior to them; that dogs look up at their masters, and consider them as their betters; while horses consider themselves equal to us. What do you think about this?
Another thing I know is that all horses are wary of us and have to be domesticated, because it is not so long ago that they were hunted for food by men. In France, for example, you will see horse meat shops.

Peru Culture
The culture of Peru is vast and a fascinating aspect of travel throughout the country. The Indian Culture is prevalent in the cities and countryside. We do offer special tours of unique remote villages their inhabitants. On Taquile Island in Lake Titicaca the men knit caps and bags of colorful wool and their lifestyle is attuned to the rocky island that they farm. Or Amantani Island where the folk is kind and gentle with a simple lifestyle but intricate social structure. In Cuzco the Incan descendants are visible on the streets, farms and homes dressed in colorful wool clothing and felt hats. On a full day excursion from Cuzco visit the Willoc's Weavers in their native rural Quechua community where excellent textiles are produced by the women. In the cities of Cuzco Lima and Arequipa the colonial style and Plaza de Armas harken back to the Spanish influence as well as the European style of the city dwellers.

The combination of Catholic/European influences with indigenous/Amerindian roots makes Peru's colorful traditions marvels of adaptation and blending. For instance, in the earth offering ceremony Culture Xplorers travelers will learn about and participate in, the shaman (or Paco as they are called in the Andes) uses ingredients such as pig fetuses with indigenous belief system of giving strength, adding crosses and symbols from the catholic church, finally blessing the whole lot with the names of mountains in the region. We will learn about and see many of these unique traditions during our stay.

hr = escape(window.location.href); Culture Peruvian music is almost entirely folk music, while its literature encompasses everything from independence-inspired polemic to the anarchic individualism of its many poets and the boyhood reveries of the internationally renowned author Mario Vargas Llosa. The main religion is Roman Catholicism, though the Indians, while outwardly Catholic, often blend Catholicism with traditional beliefs. Spanish is the main language. In the highlands, most Indians are bilingual, but speak Quechua as their mother tongue. There are about 70 other languages, and in remote parts of the Amazon, Spanish is rarely spoken. English is understood in major hotels and airline offices. Typical Peruvian dishes are tasty and vary regionally. Seafood is, understandably, best on the coast, while the Inca delicacy - roast guinea pig - can be sampled in the highlands. Other dishes include: lomo saltado (chopped steak fried with onions); cebiche de corvina (white sea bass marinated in lemon, chilli and onions, often served cold with a boiled potato or yam); and sopa a la criolla (a lightly spiced noodle soup with beef, egg, milk and vegetables).
