A Perl Tutorial
This is a "getting started" tutorial on the Perl programming language. You will probably also want to refer to the following material: Also, DOS users will probably want a copy of Perl for DOS . Unix users needn't worry - its already there.
About the Tutorial
The following material is meant to be read sequentially. We try to spend some time introducing most of the concepts of data and variables. More thorough examples of complete programs will come later. The official Perl motto is " There is more than one way to do it ". In this tutorial, we by-and-large mention one way only, and we usually try to mention the way that is "simpler" and closer to other programming languages. In the following, links denoted by Quiz are self tests that you should take to test your understanding of the material.
The Lessons
In the first several lessons, we mostly show how Perl shares a number of characteristics with more common languages, so as not to scare you too much.

Perl 6 Essentials is the first book that offers a peek into the development of the new Perl language while it's still in flux. Written by members of the Perl 6 core development team, the book covers the development not only of Perl 6 syntax but also Parrot, the language-independent interpreter developed as part of the Perl 6 design strategy. This book is essential reading for anyone committed to the Perl community. It will satisfy their curiosity and show how changes in the language will make it more powerful and easier to use.
Buy from: Amazon Powells Amazon UK Perl6 is the next version of the Perl programming language. The project attempts to address the interpreter, the language, and the culture. The internals of the version 5 interpreter are so tangled that they hinder maintenance, thwart some new feature efforts, and scare off potential internals hackers. The language as of version 5 has some misfeatures that are a hassle to ongoing maintenance of the interpreter and of programs written in Perl. And finally, the entire Perl community is invited to participate in the design and implementation of perl6. "Perl 5 was my rewrite of Perl. I want Perl 6 to be the community's rewrite of Perl and of the community."

Main Menu Home What i do Web Services Unix Services ... Contact Me
    Welcome:
From this site you can find out all about what i do for a living, as you can guess by now, im a web programmer. I have been doing this sort of work for over 5 years now, mostly on a freelance basis and mostly for companies in my neighbourhood (Kent UK). Generally i dont design websites because im trained in the technical aspects of the web: mail / web servers and programming languages. But i have, of late, turned my hand to designing a couple of sites. Nothing to fancy, the ideas lean towards technically advanced text based sites that drag search engines in from around the globe. I cannot guarantee you thousands of visits a month, and anybody that does is a liar. But i can give you a dynamic site that is easily updated by either you or a dedicated member of your workforce. This way your visitors will keep coming back. I have a wealth of experience with Perl, ASP, PHP and WML with some very large and complex web apps under my belt see here for details. All html coding and script output can be validated XHTML / HTML if required to any of the W3 DTD's (basic, loose, strict, transitional). Providing web pages that are fully validated to one of the above DTD's for HTML or XHTML give you the confidence that all browsers (that adhere to these standards) will render your site correctly. A good web page should render well even in a text mode browser (yep people still use them).

    Rationale
Perl was designed to be a practical language to extract information from text files and to generate reports from that information. One of its mottos is "There's more than one way to do it" (TMTOWTDI - pronounced 'Tim Toady'). Another is Perl: the Swiss Army Chainsaw of Programming Languages . One stated design goal is to make easy tasks easy and difficult tasks possible. Its versatility permits versions of many programming paradigms: procedural functional , and object-oriented (though some claim that Perl is not a cleanly designed language because of its multiple paradigms). Perl has a powerful regular expression engine built directly into its syntax. Perl is often considered the archetypal

    Introduction to Perl programming
    Dave Regan regan@peak.org
Perl is a programming language which excels at handling textual information. It has been used with good success for systems administration tasks on Unix systems, World Wide Web CGI programming, as well as customizing the output from other programs. This class is an introductory class which will cover the basics of Perl programming and use example scripts as guides. I assume that you have some experience with some other programming so that we can discuss parallels between the languages and build upon your current knowledge. There is a 3 hour class, an assignment to work on, and a follow up 3 hour lab a week later to go over the assignments and other rough spots which the students have found. These course notes are available on the World Wide Web at http://www.peak.org/~regan/perl/ . The on-line version of these notes has the advantage of linking into the FAQs and other on-line references which are too bulky or would get out of date too quickly to print out. A fair amount of documentation is included with each of the Perl distributions. On Unix systems, you can say
