VETERINARY DENTISTRY
by Debra A. Fiorito, DVM, FAVD
Bricktown Veterinary Hospital, P.A.
Studies have determined that between 85-95 % of all dogs beyond the age of 3 and 80% of cats beyond the age of five have some form of dental disease. Dental disease, if left untreated, may progress to heart, kidney and liver failure. Therefore, it is essential to prevent and treat dental disease; such care may actually help prolong the life of the pet. The best introduction to veterinary dentistry includes a discussion of the anatomy of the tooth. The crown of the tooth is that part above the gum line and is composed of three basic layers. Enamel, which is the hardest substance in the body, comprises the outermost layer. The middle layer is composed of a substance called dentin; the dentin surrounds an inner core of dental pulp. The pulp is made up of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. The root of the tooth, that part below the gum line, is firmly attached to the bone of the jaw by numerous ligaments, collectively termed the periodontal ligament. The root's outermost layer is composed of cementum which, like enamel, encircles the dentin and pulp. Periodontal disease, also known as periodontitis, is a common form of dental disease found in dogs and cats. Periodontitis develops as a result of dental plaque, which is whitish to grayish, slippery material seen near the gingival margin or gum line. Plaque is made up of food articles, organic material, and bacteria. The bacteria feed on the food particles and, in so doing, produce toxic acidic wastes. These acidic wastes cause gingivitis (inflammation of the gum tissues), and periodontitis (inflammation of the structures suspending the tooth in its socket).
