Periodontal or gum diseases are serious infections affecting the tissues surrounding the teeth. These tissues include the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Gone unchecked, periodontal disease can result in tooth loss (See Stages of the Disease). Periodontal disease is usually a slow, painless, progressive disease. Most adults with periodontal disease are unaware they have it. If diagnosed and treated early, however, the teeth can be saved. What Causes Periodontal Disease? The main cause of periodontal disease is the accumulation of plaque bacteria (see picture at left). Plaque is an often colorless mass of bacteria that sticks to teeth, crowns and bridges, and other tissues in the oral cavity. Plaque is constantly forming on the teeth. Plaque irritates the gums, causing them to become red, tender, and swollen. If not removed daily, plaque becomes the hard material known as tartar or calculus. Calculus cannot be removed by brushing and flossing alone. A dentist, periodontist, or hygienist must remove it manually to stop the disease process.

UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY Graduate Periodontics Program The Department of Periodontics at the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry offers a three-year post-graduate program in periodontics leading to a specialty certificate and an M.S. degree. The primary goal and focus of the program is to produce a relatively small number of highly trained specialists who are not only excellent clinicians, but are also well educated in relevant basic sciences and in principles of scientific research and investigation. Graduate students are required to complete an original research project and thesis. The program is fully accredited and graduates are eligible for examination by the American Board of Periodontology. At the present time, all of the full-time faculty in the Department of Periodontics are diplomates of the American Board of Periodontology. The starting date for the graduate periodontics program is July 1st of each year and encompasses a full-time 36-month course of study. The program provides an integrated course of study that encompasses a variety of clinical, didactic and research experiences. The clinical experiences available in the graduate periodontics include a broad range of periodontal treatment, including the placement and maintenance of dental implants. Residents work closely with the other graduate programs at the College of Dentistry and also assist in the training of dental students and dental hygiene students. Residents spend all three summers in hospital rotations at HCA Presbyterian Hospital, and include experiences in history and physical diagnosis, emergency medicine, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, and anesthesiology. Upon graduation, our residents are well prepared for careers in clinical practice and academic dentistry.
