Name: Youth Performing Arts School Philharmonia
Ages: 14-18
Home Town: Louisville, KY

The 35 members of the Youth Performing Arts School Philharmonia are all students at the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville, a high school where kids can major in music, dance, drama or any one of a variety of performing arts. "It's a magnet school in the public school system and one of the oldest magnet schools in the country," explains Philharmonia conductor Lyndon Lawless.
The Philharmonia members laugh when they recall their original fears of what it would be like to join the orchestra and work with its esteemed conductor, who has earned a reputation for being somewhat demanding. "The freshmen always come in terrified," says violist Shirin Amchin. "All of us were the same way, and then after a few weeks we were like, 'What were we scared of?'" "Mr. Lawless does expect a lot from us, but he's so cool most of the time," says violinist Alice Culin-Ellison. "He's only scary if you don't work!"
There are actually two Alices in the orchestra (bassist Alice Markiewicz is the other), and, aside from sharing the same first name and being good friends, the two Alices often act as orchestra motivators. "If we've had a rough week of rehearsals and people haven't been practicing enough we'll be like, 'Go home and practice! This is really important," says Alice M. "If it's not Mr. Lawless being demanding, it's probably us!"

The School of Theatre and Dance
was created in March 2002 with the merger of the Departments of Theatre and Dance. The BA program in Theatre is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and is recognized as a program of excellence in the undergraduate study of theatre. The School's mission is to educate students in the art of theatre and dance, to conduct original research, and to present challenging theatre and dance productions to the university and Tampa Bay communities. We offer BA curricular programs in theatre (arts, design, and performance) and dance studies; BFA in dance performance (modern and ballet) and theatre design. Additionally we have an approved MFA Dramatic Writing Program planned for implementation in fall 2003. We have a growing enrollment with approximately 250 undergraduate students. An exchange program with Middlesex University in London provides opportunities for theatre and dance students to study in London and for Middlesex students to attend USF. Our alumni work professionally in many of the major national markets in theatre, television and film; perform and crew on national tours; work in international venues; and work as performers, designers, administrators, and teachers in local, regional, and national theatres and school programs. The School of Theatre and Dance is committed to engaging our students in real world issues in their development as artists. We entertain, we enlighten, and we stimulate important discussion of vital issues. Our students can expect to be involved in their classes and productions throughout their time of study with us. Again, welcome to the School of Theatre and Dance. We hope you will take the opportunity to join us for our season of dance and theatre productions. The $25 million University of Hartford Performing Arts Center will provide new performance spaces, rehearsal halls, teaching rooms, and studios for the internationally renowned, 84-year-old Hartt School, alleviating significant space shortages in the School's existing building and providing state-of-the-art facilities for Hartt students and the community alike.
Dramatic Growth of an Outstanding School:
When the Fuller Music Center opened its doors in 1962, The Hartt School enrolled 250 college students and 1,000 Community Division students. Today, these figures have risen to 700 and 2,500 respectively, with added faculty and greatly expanded academic offerings. Hartt also hosts a schedule of over 400 concerts, recitals, dance performances, plays, master classes, and musical theatre productions in the aging Fuller Center. The continued growth of the student body has forced the School to rent off-campus space.
The New Facility:
The initiative will convert the expansive spaces of the former Thomas Cadillac distributorship into a vibrant center for performing arts education, preserving the unique exterior character of the three buildings designed in 1929 by pioneering industrial architect Albert Kahn. The Center will house Hartt's Theatre, Dance, and Vocal Divisions, and provide additional space for Hartt's Community Division.
