Announcing a new college combining the Humanities and the Fine and Performing Arts at Northern Arizona University NAU’s restructuring plan will this summer establish a new college that encompasses the fine and performing arts and the humanities. The linking of outstanding faculty and students from a range of applied and academic disciplines in the arts and humanities offers extraordinary opportunities to create an environment in which students may acquire a truly integrated, liberal education. Over the course of the next few weeks, the new college’s leaders and faculty will focus on proposing an appropriate name for the College and the organization of curricular, faculty, and student affairs. In the next couple of months, the College’s office will be established, and with the beginning of the 2004-05 academic year, college faculty and administrative staff will work to ensure that all programs housed in the College will receive strong support and appropriate resources. The faculty and staff are committed to founding a community whose innovation and creativity will make the College the world’s window onto NAU.

Are you excited by the possibility of using street theatre to bring a community festival to life? Or by using story telling and dance to enrich the curriculum of an inner-city school? Or by taking performance poetry into one of Britain's jails? If so, Performing Arts could be just the course for you. We look at artistic performance in its broadest sense, which means you will study the subject both in theory, in the classroom, and in practice, in the studio, cinema, theatre and out in the community. Performing Arts is offered as part of a joint honours degree in the Univesity's Institute of Education so you study it alongside one other subject. You will find it combines particularly well with other courses in the Institute such as Early Childhood Studies; Educational Studies; Communication, Media and Culture or with any one of over 60 other subjects taught at Brookes such as Music, Fine Art or English.

Bachelor of Education - Performing Arts
The College courses complement University of Canterbury papers in Education, Drama and one other teaching area to provide an extensive and appropriate basis for Performing Arts education in secondary schools. In particular the College courses deal with the application of the Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum in all aspects, from programme planning and management to assessment and preparation for national qualifications. They also provide for studies that recognise cultural and practical imperatives for the Performing Arts. Graduates of this programme will be equipped to teach a range of aspects centred in the performing arts, including practical performance skills and theatre practice in education. They will also develop an understanding of historical and sociological influences in the performing arts and the knowledge and skills for directing school productions. This degree/graduate diploma qualification offers an attractive opportunity for people with a strong interest in the Performing Arts and a record of involvement in at least one of Drama or Dance or Kapa Haka. Students will not need to be top performers. However, they will need to be committed to developing practical performance skills to the level needed for effective modelling and teaching. Most importantly, students in this course will have a genuine interest in supporting young people to grow and express themselves through performance.

Introduction The School of Media and Performing Arts is at the heart of the cultural life of the university. Working across three campuses, it embraces the disciplines of Media Studies, Music and Theatre Studies. We recognise that students coming to these disciplines invariably have a strong desire to develop their practice. We aim to facilitate this and we value highly the practical work of our students in television, radio, multimedia, photography, musical composition and musical and theatrical performance. We recognise that practical work needs a sound critical and theoretical underpinning and each of our courses is designed to provide this. We also seek to develop a range of key transferable skills, skills that have helped our students to be highly successful in gaining employment not only as performers, teachers, media practitioners and journalists but also in the rapidly developing cultural industries.
Our courses all make use of the most recent technologies and seek to provide an up-to-the- minute education in each of our subject areas. The School is well-resourced with dedicated television, radio and theatre studios and an extensive provision in music technology. We will shortly take possession of a newly refurbished facility for the teaching of drama at Magee College, and we are currently installing a state-of-the-art digital imaging facility in Media Studies.

The South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Standards describes what students should know and be able to do in the visual and performing arts prior to graduation from high school. These standards set high expectations for students and are intended to raise the level of artistic and cultural literacy as well as improve students' performance in the visual and performing arts. The standards clearly communicate these expectations to parents, students, teachers, the business community, and the public. These standards are based on the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Framework , adopted by the South Carolina State Board of Education in November 1993. The standards were developed in collaboration with the following professional arts organizations: South Carolina Dance Association, South Carolina Theatre Association, South Carolina Music Educators Association, and South Carolina Art Education Association. Each organization appointed four individuals to serve on the Visual and Performing Arts Academic Achievement Standards Development Team. In addition, each respective arts organization appointed a Standards/Assessment Task Force to serve as a resource for the Achievement Standards Development Team. This document represents a collaborative effort among the Development Team, the professional arts organizations, and the Department of Education.
