Comments from people who have read this book Rating: 3/5 - Perennials in depth This book is one of the top 25 best sellers for Timber Press, who have earned an enviable reputation for publishing top-notch books about gardening. Like many authors of this type of book, DiSabato-Aust has divided her material into two parts. Rather less than half provides information about basic perennial gardening - planning, maintenance and pruning for example. Rather more than half is a listing of plants giving basic information about each and information about maintenance and pruning specific to the species, and related plants. I found the most useful sections to be those on disbudding, pinching back, cutting back, thinning and dead-heading. I know these are all ways to encourage better blooms and healthier plants, but I've never known how much, when and with which plants. This book explains these techniques thoroughly. I've no excuses now - it's off with their heads and I'll have masses of bloom and compact healthy plants. The writer has packed a ton of valuable information into this book, but it isn't the most readable book on this topic and the illustrations aren't up to the usual standard for Timber Press. The dedicated gardener, however, will find lots of ideas for refining their gardening techniques.

WELCOME TO MAGIC SNAIL!
Welcome to MagicSnail!
We're here to explore the world of gardening together. I must admit I'm a novice gardener having only purchased my home 3 years ago, but I am learning fast and anxious to see my garden come to life again this year.
Here I'll share what I've learned through reading, experience and the advice of gardeners far more experienced than me. I come from a family of farmers so hopefully I inherited a bit of a green thumb.
I'll share my experiences as we go down the Magic Snail trail so that all our visitors can learn from my successes and failures! Check the trail for updates often as things are changing quickly since Spring has Sprung! :)

Bali Hai nursery is a small family run business set in the heart of the lovely Glens of Antrim coast line.
The main advantage of having a nursery here is the climate, being so close to the sea and situated in an enclosed bay surrounded by mountains, we find that our nursery is usually three degrees warmer than the rest of the North coast of Ireland. As we are a small firm more personal attention is given to the plants and how they are looked after. Visits to our nursery by the public is generally by appointment only, thus we do not have many casual callers which means we have more time to concentrate on growing plants.

How to Maintain Perennial Gardens
Perennial gardens require less maintenance than lawns, but they do need regular care to look their best and stay healthy. The following tasks are arranged in order of frequency from weekly to annually.
  • Remove spent flowers.
  • Using scissors or hand pruner, snip off flower stems just above a leaf or bud when they finish blooming to prevent them from forming seeds.
  • Pick off damaged leaves.
  • Inspect for pests and problems.
  • Look for leaves with holes or ragged edges; sticky, discolored or spotted leaves; chewed or abnormally growing flowers or buds; or damaged stems.
  • If you discover a problem, take samples of the damaged plant to a garden center with experienced staff or contact the Master Gardeners organization in your area for identification and advice.

perennial garden design
How to design perennial gardens for both sunny and shady locations; which plants to use for both plus tips on where to get great garden lovers' catalogs.
Most of us who are blessed with a bit of ground to call our own have dreamed of having a lush and beautiful garden. You can endure the drudgery of planting an endless series of short-lived annuals or, with not much more effort, use perennials and enjoy their familiar colors and fresh green leaves year after year. bodyOffer(24668) Planning is the key here. First, map out the shape of your beds and incorporate organic material such as well-rotted manure, compost or leaf mold into the soil. Both clay and sandy soils will benefit from this addition. When you buy the compost, pick up a few bags of mulch, such as wood chips. This will make your beds look very tidy, cut down on weeds and hold in moisture. Watch your purposed planting areas during the course of a day. Does the sun shine on that spot all day, or do you need to choose plants that will thrive in shade? (If its early spring, be sure to keep in mind any trees that will screen out the sun once theyre in full leaf.) Keep your climate in mind; youll need to consult with a nursery as to which plants thrive in your zone. The plants Ill be discussing do quite well across the board. Now to the fun part, choosing the plants. For a really abundant look, work from back to front, starting with the tallest plants. In a sunny garden, paeonia (peonies), of which there are 33 varieties ranging from 18 inches to 3 1/2 feet tall, will make a gorgeous backdrop. The flowers of the peony are from 3 to 5 inches wide and appear from mid to late spring into the early summer; the rest of the season youll enjoy their handsome foliage. They do best in moderate climates; they dont thrive where the summers are torrid. In the hotter climates, panicum or switch-grass will serve nicely as your tallest plants. Itll grow from 4 to 6 feet high and provide masses of feathery greenery, with green to pink flowers in late summer.

Annual/Perennial Garden
The Annual/Perennial Garden is among the most colorful areas at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia. It is at its prime when the summer annuals peak, but winter annuals and an assortment of herbaceous perennials create interest throughout the year. The garden includes specialty (theme) collections such as plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies and a traditional perennial border. The All-America Selections Display Garden is located in the Annual/Perennial Garden. New and recent AAS award winners are displayed in this section of the garden. Flowers for drying are grown in an adjacent area, providing materials for workshops on wreath-making and dried flower crafts. A nearby area devoted to children's gardening provides a place for fun hands-on learning. The Garden offers a variety of classes for children on weekends, after school, and during the summer. Children visiting this area will enjoy the colorful displays and unique ways in which plants are grown.

Perennial Garden Color
by William C. Welch
Reviewed by Cynthia W. Mueller, Master Gardener, Galveston County Perennial Garden Color For Texas and The South
has long been the primary source of information for Texas gardeners interested in learning how to garden successfully under hot and dry Southern conditions, using reliable, time-tested garden plants. Only with the special help of a guide written specifically for the Southern region can years of trial and error in the garden be avoided.
Perennial Garden Color provides detailed information on planting and growing over 125 different perennials and their companion plants. Also included are over 100 varieties of old garden roses together with comments on their history and uses. Bill Welch is a popular speaker, well known for the quality of his slides of both garden plants and the design of the gardens and surrounding landscape, as well. He is a member-at-large of the Garden Club of America and the Chairman of the Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. four-course Landscape Design series held twice a year in Bryan, Texas, and is responsible for the high quality and range of the invited speakers. Master Gardeners will be quite familiar with his presentations. Readers of this book will find that Dr. Welch goes beyond detailing individual flowers, however, to emphasize their use in landscape design. He shows you how to harmonize the color, texture and shape of perennials, old roses, and companion plants to create an overall effect of grace and elegance. The dozens of photographs of landscape designs offer a wealth of ideas and inspiration. Special attention is focused on the cottage garden, a concept which was brought to the New World from Europe and examples of which can still be found throughout Texas and the South. Dr. Welch presents a history of this traditional design and gives you the information you need to make this lovely European gardening style your own.
