Perennial Garden Color By Dr. William C. Welch, Landscape Horticulturist
Landscape Design Possibilities
erennials are versatile plants that offer a variety of creative uses in the garden. Perennials, you will find, offer an infinite number of exciting combinations. From tiny terrace gardens of inner city apartments, to extensive country estates, perennials can add color, form, and texture, often for many years and with a minimum of maintenance. A look at some landscape possibilities should help to stimulate ideas for specific applications. The Perennial Border We inherited from England the perennial border style as we know it today, and it is a version of the cottage gardens that evolved during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The two greatest popularizers of this planting style were Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) and William Robinson (1838-1935), who proposed it as a rebellion against Victorian gardens, landscapes that Robinson once described as “the ugliest gardens ever made.” Typically, the gardens of upper-class Victorians featured rigid, geometric masses of brightly colored annuals, all maintained at a uniform height like tufts in a carpet. This style was known as “bedding out,” and it had gained popularity after 1845 when the British government lifted the tax on glass. By lowering the cost of building greenhouses on residential estates, this measure made it possible to produce annuals economically and in quantity.

Great book for the beginning gardener!
Perennials in depth
Not for the Average Gardener
We found this book to be more for the advanced gardener than the first-timer. There are not enough photos of the plants, and they are listed by their scientific names as opposed to their common names. A cross-reference would have been nice. We were disappointed.

Gardens with Style

Whether you want to create a formal flower garden for special events or a causal garden for strolling, there are many perennial flowers that will fit the bill.
shop for perennials

Choosing a garden style is a little like getting dressed. You might choose a "tie and jacket" look for your garden, using formal, symmetrical plantings, sheared hedges, and rows of flowering plants. Or you might be more of a "blue jeans" gardener, opting for an informal layout with rambling plantings. Or maybe you are somewhere in between. Formal or Casual?

Herb and Perennial Garden Assistant(s)
St. John's Organic Community Garden

Details: Currently, we are looking for two or three people who would like to donate a minimum (there's never a maximum in community gardening too much to do! ;-)) of two days/month to help maintain our perennial area where we grow culinary and medicinal herbs, species roses, berry bushes and fruit trees, many of which are rare or unique species donated by colleagues in Seed Savers Exchange, the North American Fruit Explorers and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. In exchange for help maintaining the area (weeding, mulching, pruning, watering, etc.) volunteers may help themselves to whatever herbs/flowers/small fruits as they can use. Work in the perennial area runs from March until November. If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, simply e-mail the coordinator. Skills: A willingness to learn how to care for both common and rare herbs, small fruits and species roses is all that's required. Would be happy to teach propagation techniques, if desired. Experienced gardeners are welcome and encouraged, also.

Herb makes crossover to perennial gardens
By Norman Winter MSU Horticulturist
Keep your eyes open when shopping at local garden centers and you just may find Honey Bee Blue agastache. Herb lovers have been growing this plant, also known as anise hyssop, for years and relishing in not only its beauty but also its tough nature. In the flower garden, plant Honey Bee Blue boldly in drifts adjacent to gold-yellow and orange marigolds (top). Purple Heart and pink shades of petunias or periwinkles also work well. The botanical genus Agastache is related to other well-known garden plants like salvia and coleus. This is one great perennial that I can't imagine being without. It is hardy from zones 5 to 9. Even though we had a wet winter, they are ready to bloom not only in my landscape but in the containers I left on the deck all winter as well. The Honey Bee Blue agastache, which also comes in Honey Bee White, is well named it is much loved by every kind of bee in the neighborhood. Plant some of these and you will add a new dimension of sound to the landscape: the buzz of the busy bees. The plants reach about 20 to 36 inches tall.

First seen in Germany and Holland in 1993 and in Mill Valley (San Francisco), California in 1995. It is now establishing itself up and down the West Coast. With the discovery of it in Richmond, British Columbia there can be no doubt gardeners have a real nasty fungus to deal with should it escape containment. Sudden Oak Death is a newly discovered species of the family of fungus which include the famous Potato fungus which caused the Irish Potato Famine. It certainly comes from a noteworthy family! It has been named Phytophthora ramorum.
