So please, if you have any specific plant questions, contact us and we will help in any way we can. 2004 ASHs FEATURED HERB OF THE YEAR: BASIL
Basil was the herb of the year 2003 and because we do not offer garlic plants (yet!) which is the herb of the year for 2004, we decided to re-reun the information on basil. Always our favorite, basil is the most popular selling herb capturing approximately 22% of the market. There is good reason for this! Basil is used as a culinary, medicinal, aromatic, ornamental and cosmetic herb as well as a companion plant in the vegetable garden. There many varieties and AlwaysSummerHerbs offers 14 of the best. History
According to Rodale's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs, basil was not associated with the good feelings we have today. In 17th century Italy, basil was feared. In an anecdote attributed to Tournefort (a 17th century botanist) a man, who reportedly snuff dry basil frequently, turned to madness and eventually death in a short time. Upon opening his brain, surgeons found a nest of scorpions. Some believed that the name basil is derived from

Plant Descriptions, Cultivation Tips, Lore, Trivia, Cultivars
by Ben Sharvy "God Almighty first planted a garden. And indeed it is the purest of human pleasures."
Francis Bacon This database lists every perennial plant that is worth growing for the sake of its produce, and that is hardy in at least 3 USDA hardiness zones; it also contains a selection of the most popular perennial herbs. Every plant listed here will survive temperatures down to at least 15 F without special care, and to at least 10 F with special care. Update. You can get all this and more as a Macintosh application, for only $15. The application comes with images for every plant (except the dandelion!), and the average image quality is higher than at the Web site (the photo for pineapple guava is typical). I might convert the photos to a cross-platform format upon request. There is a full-featured search engine, so that you can select only those plants that, say, will grow in zone 4, do not reject soggy soil, and attract birds. More info.

Where to use Perennials in the Perennial border
By V. Ries The term perennial border has become a by-word wherever gardening is done. Perennial borders around the edges of the home plot or old-style back yard have done much to get people away from the old type of gardening that consisted of a lawn cluttered up with small flower beds. It is generally realized that today the better effect is obtained by giving the flowers the necessary setting by placing them in a border around the edges of the yard or garden. The lawn then serves as a foreground for the picture. It may have a background hedge or a planting of shrubs; or, if space is lacking, a vine-covered fence may serve and at the same time give the ever essential privacy and seclusion that good taste desires in the modern garden. The perennial border may be fitted to any property, however small, however large. It may be only a foot wide and a few feet long, or ten feet or more wide and several hundred feet long. It may represent the initial expenditure of twenty-five cents for seed or hundreds of dollars for plants.

Our mandate is to be gardeners helping gardeners (and have fun doing it) To find information on St. Margaret's Bay and where it is in the world, click on the globe
We have very little soil to work with; but we do have great rocks and boulders to incorporate into our flower and vegetable beds. Our soil is very acidic, and some of us have wind (sometimes cold and dry, sometimes cold and wet) to deal with. Most of us garden in rural areas and also must co-exist with squirrels, rabbits, racoons and grazing white tail deer in addition to bugs and slugs. We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the fall, winter and spring months (September, October, November, January, February, March, April and May). We have a guest speaker at each meeting and the topics have ranged from landscape design, planting according to the phases of the moon, to attracting birds to your yard. We have a seed exchange in October and a perennial exchange in the spring.

You also should research the bloom times so that your garden will have color through an extended period of time. Think about combinations for certain times of the year; group some like-timed flowers for seasonal fireworks (see my companion gardening article for more information on how to balance out your garden). Care of a Perennial Garden
Keep your Perennials happy and your garden healthy
Basic upkeep and care of your perennials will promote healthiness and produce better results. Follow these easy steps and you'll see stunning results in your garden.
Irrigation: xeriscaping
Hand-watering with a hose can eat up a lot of your time and can waste a lot of water, as can sprinklers. If you still prefer over-head watering, however, water your plants early in the day. Soaker and drip irrigation hoses will save you time and will conserve water. Because these irrigation systems water at soil level, they also prevent leaves from getting wet, which can lead to disease. Consider xeriscaping , using drought-tolerant perennials like sedums penstemons and yucca to achieve a desert look with a desert like need for watering; not much.
