Previous: String Instruments Next: Woodwind A percussion instrument is one that is shaken or hit to make a sound. The drum set is only of many different percussion instruments. A good percussionist should be able to play them all and will need to have a good sense of rhythm. Experience playing keyboard instruments such as the piano will also certainly help when playing the pitched instruments. Some percussion instruments can play melodies. These are called tuned percussion. The xylophone glockenspiel marimba vibraphone ,and timpani are all tuned percussion instruments. Other percussion instruments that do not produce a definite pitch are generally termed unpitched percussion. These include most drums snare drum bass drum , drum set, etc.) and also other instruments used mostly for special effects. Some of these instruments which add colour to an ensemble are the triangle gong castanets , rattle, cowbell woodblock tambourine maracas ... claves , and whistles.

There is a NEARLY innumerable amount (that's the challenge here!) of different percussion instruments. I think percussionists are multi-instrumentalists, after all, every instruments has its own acquired technique. Just think of a samba band... A lot these instruments are derived from other cultures and have a long history. I like to debate with people, where the roots of instruments lie, like congas, are they really purely derived from Congolese drums or is there a Ghanaian influence as well? A modern drumkit is actually a mishmash of different cultural heritage thrown into one!
In this directory I hope to build up a thorough resource of instruments and their backgrounds, maintenance and basic techniques.
This site will be under construction for a long time!
Instruments will be listed with photos and by style of music and region.
Please, if you have anything to add to the dimension of this directory, I'll be more than happy to hear about it! EUROPEAN LATIN BRAZILIAN AFRICAN NATIVE AMERICAN MIDDLE EASTERN ... ORCHESTRAL visitors since 20-8-'01

Click here to find out more Tune Buddies Getting to Know Drums and Percussion Instruments Warner Bros. Publications Early Elementary P. J. Smith is covering the beat - the drum beat, that is. If you love the sound of the oldest instrument, Tune Buddies: Percussions is an entertaining look at the history of drums, the types of percussion instruments, how they are made, and played. While you're waiting for the band to play, P. J.'ll explain what rhythm is and what pitched and non-pitched instruments are. You'll learn about tempo and keeping the beat. There are a lot of different percussion instruments. Of course, we all know the drum. But the keyboard-looking xylophone is also in this family. And so are cow bells. Yep, just like the one tied around Bessie's neck.

Percussion Instruments
BANDAYR
The word probably derived from late Latin "Pandorium", a variant of "Pandura", adopted from the Greek "Pandurion" and "Pandura", designating a kind of lute with three strings. The word was later used for instruments of different origins. The Bandayr which belongs to the noise making instruments, is a large circle of wood with strings of goatgut stretched inside it. These intensify the vibration of sound produced by striking the skin stretched over the sides.
DAFF
A type of square drum. It is cushion-shaped, a frame of wood with skin stretched over both ends. Four catgut strings are stretched on the interior and produce the sound vibrations. (Arch priest of Hita : "Adufe", 14th century).
DARABUKKA
A chalice-shaped drum with terracotta or metal, covered with skin across the wide opening, and prolonged in a hollow neck or gullet. This instrument is held in high esteem by Moslem musicians who play it held on the left forearm. With the right hand it is struck alternatively in the center of the skin (doum) or on the edge (tek). The figners of the left hand strike close to the circumference (tek, but softer) in syncopated or counter rhythm.
GSBAH
Literally "reed", this is a percussion instrument which is still found in certain regions of Andalusia. It is a reed with a fissure cut down its length and regulated by means of a ring at the bottom. Variations of timbre are obtained by opening an closing a small hole drilled in the lower end while beatiing on the palm of the left hand.

Some members of the percussion family may well be considered the oldest of all instruments. Rhythms beaten out on primitive surfaces or makeshift instruments have served to express sentiments and feelings throughout the ages. Generally, percussion instruments are objects that are activated by striking other objects or by shaking. The resulting sound can not only articulate the rhythm but also add color, tonal complexion, and dynamic impact to the vocal or instrumental music of which they are a part.
Drums consist essentially of skins and "shells". The drumskins are normally of calfskin or "vellums." The shell is a hollow cylinder or a bowl, more rarely a frame of some other shape, across which the skin is stretched.

The most varied assemblage of instruments in the orchestra, the percussion section is sometimes called the "hardware department." Some of the instruments have definite pitches like the timpani, glockenspiel and the xylophone. Some only contribute a pitchless sound, like the triangle, snare drum and cymbals. Primitive instruments like the gourd, rattle, and wood block are also used along with a variety of drums, gongs and chimes.
ANGIE NELSON, Percussionist Angie Nelson is in the middle of her second year performing with the percussion section of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Growing up outside of Chicago, Angie learned to play BOTH piano and percussion!

... Site Map Percussion Instruments of Ancient Egypt In the ancient Egyptian language, "ear" and "mind" are synonymous, an acknowledgment that the mind gives meaning to information received as sound vibrations. All music, whether in the temple, the palace, or the street, was termed hy, which was defined as 'joy' or 'gladness'. The symbol for joy was a woman playing a round frame drum. As in most ancient cultures the percussion instruments were identified with the primary deities. The Egyptian goddess of music, Hathor, and the goddesses, Isis and Sekhmet, were shown playing the sistrum, menit and round frame drums. The gods, Bes and Anubis, were shown playing frame drums. Percussion instruments were considered to be particularly imbued with the spiritual or shamanistic power to influence and transform consciousness and therefore reality.
