We've revamped the front page of our web site! Many of you have commented about the length of time it takes our main page to load up. Although we'd like to think our animations are great looking, if they're frustrating our viewers then we're not fulfilling our Internet strategy. So, as we ARE the type that can take a hint, here's a new "non-Flash" front page that we hope creates a happy median between pizazz and response time! We're also pleased to report that we've split off our percussion retail sales into a separate division called ANYDRUM.com , leaving Interact and Learn to focus on what we do best - percussion training and education. You can still find everything for the casual to serious percussionist at this new little neck of the Internet woods. Percussion Instruments
What would an exotica/space age pop site be without percussions? In music, any instrument whose sound is produced by a blow from another instrument or from a stick is a percussion instrument. Scientifically percussion instruments are classified as idiophones and membranophones . The idiophones are those which are made of a substance such as wood or metal, which vibrates when struck. Membranophones are those whose sound-producing agent is a stretched skin. Idiophones are tuned to definite pitches and include the Bell, the Xylophone, the Celesta, and the Glockenspiel. Those of indeterminate pitch include the Castanets, the Cymbals, the Gong, the Tambourine, and the Triangle. from "Around the World in Percussion," Billy Mure, Strand SLS 1021 Before the final selections were made, more than a hundred different drums were listened to analytically. Each had a different tonality and produced a different sound. Forty sizes of gongs were auditioned. Innumerable cymbals were tested. Each one was appraised for the musical seasoning that it might add to the finished product. from "Far Away Places," Enoch Light and his orchestra, Command RS822SD

Top of Page Percussion instruments are played by being hit or shaken. Although most people probably think of the drum, there are lots of different percussion instruments. Common percussion instruments are the drum, cymbal, xylophone, marimba, triangle, bells, tambourine and wood block. Percussion instruments can be hit with sticks like the drum, or the hand like the bongo drum, or against themselves like cymbals. A percussion instrument's sound is made by it vibrating, once hit or shaken. Different types of materials, such as metal, wood or vibrating membrane like on the drum, make different types of sounds. A different thickness or size of material can also make different sounds. Materials like membranes on drums, or wood, vibrate slowly and so make a lower pitched sound.

Percussion instruments are played by being struck or shaken. They are perhaps the oldest form of musical instruments . Some percussion instruments play not only rhythm , but also melody and harmony The two major categories are membranophones , which add timbre to the sound of being struck, such as drums, and idiophones , which sound of themselves, such as the triangle The tambourine is both membranophone and idiophone. Most percussion instruments have a distinct tone; even drums are tuned. However, a distinction is usually made based on whether the instrument can play a definite pitch or not. The timpani xylophone vibraphone bell ... crotales and glockenspiel all play a definite pitch. The snare drum bass drum afuche castanets ... whip and wood block do not in general. However, some percussionists tune drum heads to specific pitches when recording albums or in preparation for specific composer requirements. Gongs chau gong (sometimes called a tam-tam ), is untuned. Tuned cymbals exist but are rare.
