Lessons from Jonestown The mass suicide of People's Temple followers 25 years ago teaches psychologists what happens when social psychology is placed in the wrong hands. BY MELISSA DITTMANN
Monitor staff

Print version: page 36 In the middle of the jungle in Guyana, South America, nearly 1,000 people drank lethal cyanide punch or were shot to death, following the orders of their leader, Jim Jones. Mothers and fathers gave the deadly drink to their children and then drank it themselves. People screamed. Bodies trembled. And within a few minutes on Nov. 18, 1978, 912 people were dead. Jones' followers originally came to the Guyanese community, known as Jonestown, seeking paradise and an escape from racism and persecution in the United States. Instead, they found something that resembled a concentration camp in which they worked long hours with little food and much abuse, those who escaped Jonestown have reported. Twenty-five years later, social psychologists continue to examine how Jones came to command such enormous influence over his followers' thoughts and actions. Jonestown, they say, offers important lessons for psychology, such as the power of situational and social influences and the consequences of a leader using such influences to destructively manipulate others' behavior.

Jonestown- 25 Years Ago Today
Today marks the 25th anniversary of the massacre/mass suicide at Jonestown. Granted, I was barely 4 years old when it happened, but it's one of those events that people still to this day are trying to understand and put their arms around. I can still remember the overhead helicopter shots of the bodies carpeting the jungle floor and how eerie it all seemed.

JONESTOWN
Most modern researchers believe that the escapes removed at least half of the residents before Congressman Ryan and the U.S. Rapid Deployment Force came in all arrogant and blustery and triggered the mass suicide of the remainder. It speaks volumes that so many people committed suicide rather than be forcibly returned to the U.S.

Cult Tragedy in the News
Ugandan authorities said on Saturday leaders of a doomsday cult appeared to have systematically killed cult members for months, and feared finding more mass graves around the country.
On Friday, police found 153 bodies under a building used by the cult in Buhunga in southwest Uganda. Many of the victims were apparently clubbed, strangled or hacked to death in recent weeks. Some may also have been poisoned.
Authorities said more bodies could be found at that site, as well as at three other locations used by the Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God in the region.
Some of the victims in Buhunga were thought to have died up to four months ago, but the vast majority appeared to have been killed this year, some just two weeks ago.
Muhwezi said some cult members who had been asked to sell their possessions and give the proceeds to the church had apparently demanded their money back when a prediction the world would end on December 31, 1999 failed to come true.

passed cyanide-laced grape drink around to his cult followers as part of a mass suicide-murder that left more than 900 people dead in Jonestown, Guyana. An annual memorial service will be held today at a mass grave in Oakland, Calif., where more than 400 of the victims are buried. Jonestown survivors say the years since the Nov. 18, 1978, massacre have done little to ease the senselessness of the tragedy. "We were as diverse a group of people as you'll ever encounter," said survivor Stephen Jones, son of former cult leader the Rev. Jim Jones. "We were loving, passionate people. And those people shouldn't have died." The leader of the Jonestown cult, the Rev. Jim Jones, preached racial equality and integration, and led programs to help drug addicts and the elderly after moving his People's Temple Full Gospel Church from Indianapolis, Ind., to San Francisco, Calif., in 1970. Grace Stoen, a former member of the People's Temple, said she and others who had separated from the group tried to get involved in what they suspected was happening in Jonestown, Guyana.

Jim Jones and the People's Temple James Warren Jones (1931-1978) Degrees from Indiana University and Butler University Ordained in the Christian Church/Disciples of Christ. The Peoples Temple was initially structured as an inter-racial mission for the sick, homeless, and jobless. He assembled a large following of over 900 members in Indianapolis IN during the 1950's. "He preached a 'social gospel' of human freedom, equality, and love, which required helping the least and the lowliest of society's members. Later on, however, this gospel became explicitly socialistic, or communist, in Jones' own view, and the hypocrisy of white Christianity was ridiculed while 'apostolic socialism' was preached." When an investigation began into his cures for cancer, heart disease, and arthritis, he decided to move the group to Ukiah in Northern California . He preached the imminent end of the world in a nuclear war; Ukiah was judged to be as safe as any when war broke out. They later moved to San Francisco and Los Angeles After an expose during the mid 1970's in the magazine New West raised suspicions of illegal activities within the Temple, he moved some of the Temple membership
