    Students who wish to earn Pennsylvania teacher certification, as part of their degree program must complete two (2) separate externship semesters. They will typically complete their school placement, which requires a full semester, during the spring semester. Students seeking teacher certification in Speech Pathology in other states should visit that states web site or contact their home state's department of education.     HSLDA News June 28, 2002 Pennsylvania District Hassles Certified Teacher A few parents in Pennsylvania who teach their children at home file as private tutors rather than comply with the cumbersome home school law. To file as a private tutor parents need only file a copy of their current Pennsylvania teacher certification with the local superintendent, along with a current criminal history background check. Because parents must be certified teachers to qualify as a private tutor, this option is not very common. Many school districts question its legality and try to impose other requirements. Home School Legal Defense Association recently defended Mrs. Baker [name changed to protect privacy] in her quest to home school. The Conestoga Valley School District insisted that even though she was under the tutor law rather than the home school law, she had to submit an annual portfolio of records and materials for their review. HSLDA immediately contacted Conestoga Valley. Below is an excerpt from our letter:

    Program Details Villanova University's teacher education program has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as satisfying the requirements for teacher certification on the secondary level in twelve subject areas. The twelve subject areas available for certification are: Biology, Chemistry, Citizenship (formerly Social Studies), Communication (Speech and Theatre), English, French, General Science, German, Latin, Mathematics, Physics and Spanish. Admission Requirements Students admitted to the teacher education program must complete the same requirements as the candidate for the Bachelor of Science in Education degree, including student teaching. See requirements for admission to the undergraduate secondary teacher education program In evaluating the transcripts of applicants the University may accept equivalent courses in place of courses in the Education program. Retention Students enrolled in the teacher education program will have their work reviewed periodically by a departmental committee to determine whether they are progressing satisfactorily academically and in their personal development to the extent that it will be possible to recommend them for certification as teachers. Academically, students must achieve a 3.0 cumulative average and meet the general academic standards of the University to be eligible for Pennsylvania teacher certification.     The Master of Arts in Elementary Education program is designed to enable teachers to enhance their skills to meet the demands of an ever-changing profession. The program of study is planned to help teachers read and evaluate educational theory, critique and conduct research and enhance pedagogical skills. The curriculum in elementary education at Seton Hill meets the certification standards of and is accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. After completing this program, teachers will return to their classrooms as master teachers and will be qualified to serve as curriculum specialists and in-service trainers.
