Sinking Springs provides instructional services to approximately 500 students in grades 3-5, with the capacity to house up to 750 students. The building was built on multi-levels, with ramps throughout so that no stairs are necessary to access any part of the building. Sinking Springs includes 32 classrooms, 6 itinerant workrooms, a complete gymnasium, modern kitchen with “food court” style cafeteria and debit system, a state of the art media center and computer lab, music and art rooms, and a highly secure “card-reading” entry system which protects against any unauthorized personnel entering the building or individual classrooms. The outdoor landscaped areas of the site include two practice fields, a spacious playground with a full basketball court and a total of 7 separate basketball goals, and multi-featured playground equipment.

02/22/2001 - Updated 11:44 AM ET Pennsylvania school districts go digital By Karen Thomas, USA TODAY The Spring Cove, Carlisle and Quaker Valley school districts won an intense six-month contest to become the USA's first Digital School Districts, Gov. Tom Ridge will announce Thursday. They will split a state grant of $15 million to infuse technology into all school levels. More than 75 districts competed, charged with developing innovative plans to reach beyond traditional uses of technology. Six finalists met here last month with an international panel of 12 education and technology experts appointed by Ridge. Striving to "think out of the box" is what makes Pennsylvania's digital school project "extraordinary," says Carol Lemke, CEO of the Metiri Group, a Los Angeles -based education consulting firm. "The No. 1 thing missing from learning technology in schools is vision." With the help of federal funds and the "e-rate," which offers telecommunications discounts to schools, more than 95% of the nation's schools are now wired to the Net. But there's little evidence that technology is being adopted in classrooms or that it enhances learning. Ridge's initiative calls for technology to be incorporated into every aspect of learning.

[School Choice] Washington, D.C. "The teachers union's lawsuit has no merit," declared Clint Bolick, the Institute for Justice's litigation director. "It merely shows the Pennsylvania Education Association values jobs above children's education." The school board's program provides reimbursements ranging from $250 to $1,000 for parents who send their children to private schools or to public schools outside the Southeast Delco district. The program allows parents to select religiously affiliated schools for their children. The board passed the program a few weeks ago to save costs and to promote competition and parental choice. "Southeast Delco is taking this commonsense approach to avoid the educational breakdown and financial costs that come from over-crowding," Bolick said. "By affording parents the option to select the school-public, private or parochial-that best meets their children's needs, the school district takes pressure off the system and may well avoid the huge costs of constructing new school buildings." "Once again, the special interest groups are ganging up to try to take choice away from parents," said Bolick. "They have a fight on their hands."

June 07, 2004 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Significantly Better than Mammography for Detecting Number and Size of Tumors in Breast Cancer, First International Study Shows Abramson Cancer Center and International Breast MRI Consortium Present Research at ASCO: Presentation #AB-1456 Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania Mitchell Schnall, MD Prior to this international study, only single-site data was available and, due to small populations (less than 100 women) and the increased potential for single-population bias, the results could not be considered conclusive. MRI is a non-invasive procedure that uses powerful magnets and radio waves to construct pictures of the body. Unlike conventional X-rays, MRI imaging uses the magnetic properties of atoms to differentiate organs, and contrast benign and malignant tissue. Imaging planes (or "slices") from any part of the body can be projected, stored in a computer, or printed on film. MRI can easily be performed through clothing and bones. Funding for the study was provided through a research grant in 1997 from the National Cancer Institute that totaled nearly $5 million. At the time, it was the largest grant ever awarded for breast MRI research.
