Gettysburg National Military Park
This was the site of the largest Civil War battle ever waged in the Western Hemisphere. The Battle of Gettysburg opened on July 1, 1863 and closed two days later with the climactic "Pickett's charge". Historians have referred to the Battle of Gettysburg as the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy." It was the last major effort by Lee to take the fighting out of Virginia and into northern states. The Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg contains more than 7,000 interments including over 3,500 from the Civil War. It was here that President Abraham Lincoln delivered his immortal Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. On February 11, 1895, congressional legislation was signed to establish Gettysburg National Military Park as a memorial dedicated to the armies that fought that great three day battle. Gettysburg National Military Park incorporates nearly 6,000 acres, with 26 miles of park roads and over 1,400 monuments, markers, and memorials. by James M. O'Neill, Inquirer Staff Writer
Can the free-thinking academics of an Ivy League university learn to take orders from a Marine Corps major general? The University of Pennsylvania is about to find out. Judith Rodin, Penn president, yesterday named Maj. Gen. Clifford L. Stanley, 55, as Penn's chief operating officer. Stanley, who oversaw education and training programs for the Marine Corps from its base in Quantico, Va., also had been a finalist to lead the Philadelphia School District but withdrew his name from consideration twice. Rodin praised Stanley's leadership skills and his "terrific capacity to get the best out of people," as well as his experience handling community-based issues.

Tools for Activists
Introduction, January 2003
The military and its recruiters are present in almost every school in the United States. Recruiters are at schools to sell students military enlistment. They use a sales pitch that is riddled with half-truths and deceptions and individual recruiters will resort to outright lies to sign young people up. The recruiting budget for FY2003 is a whopping $2.7 billion!! The Military Out of Our Schools Organizing kit gives you the tools to act in your local community. The dangers of military enlistment are know to too few people. And the extent of the military's presence in our schools in known to even fewer. In many school districts military recruiters have unlimited access to students. The military makes its sales pitch in schools via:
  • Local military recruiters, who may be allowed to pull prospective recruits from scheduled classes and even have an office in the school;

About the Carlisle Indian Industrial School
Barbara Landis Note: I use the term "Indian" throughout this article to identify the peoples of the various autochthonous nations within the U.S. borders, who were affected by and recruited for the Indian School experiment, in keeping with the written accounts of the historic period during the school's existence.
PRATT, FT. MARION PRISONERS AND HAMPTON.
The story of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School begins with a brief introduction to its founder. Richard Henry Pratt spent eight years (1867-1875) in Indian Territory as an officer of the 10th Cavalry, commanding a unit of African-American "Buffalo Soldiers" and Indian Scouts. During this time, he was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK, 60 miles east of the site of the Battle of the Washita where Black Kettle (Cheyenne) was killed in 1867. Pratt came into contact with Kiowa, Cheyenne and Arapaho who had been placed on reservations in the area of the Red River near what is now the Texas and Oklahoma borders. He, his scouts and freed-slave soldiers, participated in the many campaigns to keep the Indians on the reservations and away from the encroaching settlers. But many of the Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors continued with their raiding parties in search of game and buffalo. Scant provisions and lack of supplies on the reservations made it impossible for the Indian people to thrive, forcing such raids. Constant complaints about inadequate government rations brought no relief. After filing numerous reports describing rancid beef, inferior and diseased livestock, poor grains and lack of provisions, Pratt developed a distrust and loathing of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) which endured throughout his military service. This deep hostility began while he was administering supplies on the reservations and eventually led to his resignation as the superintendent of the Carlisle Indian School in 1904.

The Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) is a nonprofit service organization which serves as the binding force and communication hub for its member schools. The purpose, as put forth in its Constitution, is to promote the common interest of all members and to advance their welfare; promote and maintain high scholastic, military and ethical standards in member schools; represent the mutual interests of the member schools before the Department of Defense as well as the general public; foster and extend patriotism and respect for duly constituted authority; and cultivate citizens who love peace and who strive to maintain it. Regular membership is extended to essentially military schools which have a member of the armed services detailed or approved by the Department of Defense, and which maintain good standing in their regional accrediting organization. (An "essentially military" school is defined as an institution with military programs approved by one of the military services and which organizes its student body as a cadet corps, with students habitually in uniform and continually under military discipline while under the jurisdiction of the college or school.) Associate membership may be granted to schools offering a military program but which do not otherwise qualify for regular membership.
