Abbreviation:

Linguistic Geography of Pennsylvania
The above map is historically skewed, in that boundaries follow the most modern studies when possible, but where current information is not available the boundaries must often reflect the 1939 LAMSAS data. At certain points the modern and older studies clearly conflict: Schuylkill County with its consistent monophthongization would have been better classified with the Lehigh Valley and Reading in 1939; today, its acceptance of the low back merger shows that it clearly belongs to the Anthracite region.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) GIS is an analytical tool that allows an operator to view map layers on a computer screen while accessing databases of the map features. By viewing the map layers simultaneously, one can analyze relationships within and between the different layers. GIS integrates data from different sources in a multitude of formats to represent any area within the region. Scenarios can be created to represent changes in the landscape, infrastructure, and populations. GIS is used in-house by the SPC for a multitude of activities within the various departments. SPC also provides GIS data to its planning partners, transportation agencies, transit operators, consulting firms, businesses, environmental agencies, and various offices of federal, state, county, and municipal government. With over 60 map layers, SPC has one of the largest collections of comprehensive GIS data for the 10-county region.

Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook United States Introduction United States Background: Britain's American colonies broke with the mother country in 1776 and were recognized as the new nation of the United States of America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783. During the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added to the original 13 as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions. The two most traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the Civil War (1861-65) and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Buoyed by victories in World Wars I and II and the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US remains the world's most powerful nation-state. The economy is marked by steady growth, low unemployment and inflation, and rapid advances in technology.

    Title
Digital Map Librarianship: Reference: Considerations in the Electronic Environment
Reference Services for Internet and other electronically distributed materials.
E-mail reference is much more difficult than telephone, or face-to-face service. The patron often phrases the question in an obtuse way. At PSU we often receive messages such as: "it didn’t work" or "I tried to download and nothing happened." Most users do not understand that we run several web sites and three different download services, so these messages are not only incomplete, but do not help us determine which service was the problem. We respond requesting additional information, and make an effort to meet the information request. Librarians know from experience that a good reference interview will help the patron focus on their information need. The result is often something quite different than the original request. Likewise, a large number of the e-mail messages we receive, especially after we have corresponded over a technical question, are requests for additional data, or the location of more data. In the past our primary user group was our campus or community. As the digital environment grows, one wonders how librarians will manage to meet the information needs of a very much enlarged user group. In a paper environment, librarians create user guides to try to minimize the number of frequently asked questions. In an electronic environment we can supply on-line help and documentation with the data. Just as with the paper guides, users sometimes read the help, and often do not. A clear and clean web interface will help the patrons focus on important information that we, the data providers, want to emphasize. At PSU we are in the process of developing a request for help form. When the user sends e-mail to our web address s/he will automatically be presented with a form that prompts all the necessary information for a proper assistance.
