As of USA Central Time on a total of vehicles have passed through the tollgate since the highway opened on 1998-April-01 The west portal of the Allegheny Tunnel, August, 1961 This photo was taken by my decidedly NOT road geeky father while he and Mom were on a road trip to the eastern USA and southern Ontario during the summer of 1961. (In fact, they still consider my interest in things like highways, railroads, maps and geography in general to be a 'useless' endeavor.) Seeing as my parents are both from northeast Wisconsin, they don't often have a need to use highway tunnels and they got all goo-goo eyed at the ones on the Turnpike. :-) At the time, this was the second tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as one went eastward on the highway. It is one of the four tunnels to have been widened during the mid-late 1960s. The inscription on the structure above the portal says 'Allegheny Mountain'. An Original Tollgate
Dr. Bernard D. Newman
, Pittsburgh, PA) Dr. Bernard D. Newman writes, "This is the Pa. Turnpike Toll Booth that was in operation at the Fort Littleton interchange from 1940 to 1983. It currently is on display as a function of the Alle-Kiski Historical Society and is located just off of Route 28 near Turnpike Exit 5 "Allegheny Valley". As you can see, it is all original and rapidly deteriorating. This is the last original booth available for inspection by the public. Another original toll booth was dismantled from Willow Hill, also in 1983, and was taken to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. As of this date (June, 1999), it has not been reassembled for viewing. (Note the two sturdy logs, not part of the original installation, needed to support the overhang)."

Joseph T. Scott. "Pennsylvania." From United States Gazetteer This is one of the earliest American maps of Pennsylvania, from the first American gazetteer. Joseph T. Scott, a Philadelphia engraver and publisher, issued his gazetteer during the early days of American cartography, and the maps of the individual states and territories are very good. Scott included much detail of rivers, counties, roads, and towns. This map of Pennsylvania, Scott's home state, was particularly detailed, showing many of the major sites, such as Pittsburgh and Fort Franklin, in the western part of the state. As an early example of American cartography and an fascinating document of Pennsylvania history, this is a gem.

WILL DURANT T he division's general collections, which number over 3.5 million map sheets, include both single-sheet maps and multi-sheet map series. Single-sheet maps, which provide worldwide coverage at small and medium scales, are primarily general purpose and thematic maps of continents, countries, states, counties, and cities. Multi-sheet map series, which are usually prepared at large and medium scales, also provide worldwide coverage, normally at the country and state level. single-sheet maps This detail of the 1853 map of Wyoming County in the western part of New York State is typical of the large, wall-sized county maps that gained wide circulation in the northeastern United States before the Civil War. Published in Philadelphia by Newel S. Brown, this map provides coverage of the entire county showing township boundaries, roads, towns and villages, and names of land owners, as well as enlarged insets of the individual towns and villages and views of the more prominent landmarks and structures in the county. The richly decorated borders emphasize the rural and agricultural character of the county as well as the Native American origins of the county name.

It has given its name to the Pennsylvanian time period in geology . Pennsylvania is called the Keystone State. Although Swedes and Dutch were the first European settlers, the Quaker William Penn named Pennsylvania for the Latin phrase meaning "Penn's woodlands", in honor of his father. Today, two major cities dominate the state Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall, and a thriving metropolitan area, and Pittsburgh, a busy inland river port. Pennsylvania is one of the nation's most historic states. Philadelphia is often called the cradle of the American Nation. It was here that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drawn up by the founding fathers. The Pocono Mountains and the Delaware Water Gap provide popular recreational activities.
