Upcoming Workshops: Do you Need a PR Makeover?
September 2004

A good public relations campaign keeps your library in the news. That means a public relations
plan must consistently create or exploit events that make news. How can your library
achieve this on a limited budget?
Robin Van Auken , local author, editor and instructor at Lycoming College, is the featured speaker at this district workshop. Her writing and editing experience includes the Tampa Tribune, the Williamsport Sun-Gazette and Webb Communications Weekly.
Find out how to build a positive relationship with newspaper editors, TV and radio reporters, and web 'zines. Learn how to submit press releases that will be published, and what will be tossed into the trashcan. Van Auken also will discuss the usefulness of business cards, brochures, flyers, postcards and paid ads.

Access Pennsylvania Library Database Program
The Access Pennsylvania Database is a statewide library union catalog combining the holdings of more than 1700 school, public, academic and special libraries in Pennsylvania. Its primary purpose is to facilitate interlibrary loan and resource sharing. The database contains over 29 million total records and more than 4 million unique records. The database, along with other information about the program, is available on the Internet at http://accesspa.state.pa.us (only member libraries may borrow through the system). The Access Pennsylvania program is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and administered by the Division of School Library Media Services of the state's Office of Commonwealth Libraries. More than 50 Philadelphia public schools are currently members of this program. Paul Scaer , Librarian at Masterman School, serves as Philadelphia Regional Director for Access Pennsylvania. For Philadelphia school libraries wishing to establish the Alexandria library automation system, joining the Access Pennsylvania program allows the library to obtain "retrospective conversion" service at no charge. Retrospective conversion is the process of converting a library's card catalog into a computerized database of records in MARC format. This process normally costs about 40 cents per title and would amount to several thousand dollars for most libraries. For more information, see

Library Privileges At The University Of Pennsylvania
DREXEL UNIVERSITY benefits from reciprocal privileges granted to its students by the UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA.
Drexel Students Should First Exhaust the Resources and Services at Hagerty Library Before Using the Libraries at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Access to Penn's collections is a privilege. Outsiders are not entitled use of Penn's resources, but they are allowed access through Penn's willingness to share. Penn is a private university, not required by law or city charter (as is the Free Library) to serve the public. Penn's prime mission is to serve its students and faculty. Access to the Library of the Penn Engineering School is now restricted to all non-Penn personnel, including Drexel University students and faculty, after normal business hours which includes access after 7pm Mon - Friday and not at all on weekends or holidays. Use of reference services and other materials at Penn which we found also at the Drexel's Library unfairly deprives Penn students and faculty of their use.

The Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc. (PALCI) was formed in 1996 as a grassroots federation of 35 academic libraries. PALCI is a membership organization of private and public academic libraries. The primary mission of the group is to spur the development of library cooperation within the Commonwealth. The initial focus is to create a virtual online union catalog using a Web-based interface to search members' catalogs concurrently. The system will enable direct borrowing of materials by library clients at member libraries. An additional goal is to provide access to electronic information through negotiating member purchasing of online resources and databases such as abstracting and indexing services, and electronic journals and other full-text databases.
