61. Pennsylvania Business Roundtable
of Chapter 4 of the Public education Code. Many schools in pennsylvania have established standards and required to comply with the new regulations beginning in
http://www.paroundtable.org/about_priorities.html
The Pennsylvania Business Roundtable has a long history of analyzing crucial business issues and proposing solutions to obstacles toward stronger business growth in Pennsylvania. Over time, some of the issues have changed - some haven’t - but the underlying theme has remained the same: to get business and government working together to improve the business climate and the quality of life in Pennsylvania. The following policy statements represent the Roundtable’s 1999 recommendations for a stronger business climate in the Commonwealth. They range from critical changes in our basic education system to further changes in the state’s tax structure. Roundtable members endorse these recommendations realizing that Governor Ridge and state lawmakers have already made significant progress on a campaign to lower taxes, reduce regulations, and improve public education. The Roundtable believes the following policies can be accomplished without greater cost, or risk to the quality of life in Pennsylvania. Indeed, the recommendations are designed to lower business and individual costs, yet all the while increase the standard of living in this state. Working together, business and government can form a partnership that not only improves the health of its citizens and the economy of the state, but makes it more competitive in the international market as well.

Charter Schools in Pennsylvania - FAQ's
Charter schools embody a new approach to public education. Since 1991, thirty-eight states have authorized the creation of charter schools in response to public demands for more effective and more accountable public schools. Many view charter schools as exciting and innovative initiatives that are changing and improving the educational landscape across America. Some argue that charter schools introduce a competitive dynamic into the public school system. Others prefer to think of charter schools as the research and development division of the public school system by providing a new stimulus and vehicle for innovation. There are those who see charter schools as a threat to the conventional public school system. The fact is charter schools are increasing in number. More than 2050 charter schools are already operating in the United States. In Pennsylvania, 77 charter schools have been approved since 1997, serving nearly 28,545 students. Q: What is a charter school?

Early History
In the early 1600s immigrants brought cattle with them from Europe to supply their families with dairy products and meat. Although many different breeds of cattle including Durhams, Ayrshires, Guernseys, Jerseys, and Brown Swiss were imported through the next few centuries, it was not until the late 1800s that cattle breeds were developed specifically for dairy purposes. In rural America, milk and milk products were made primarily for home or local use. However, with the movement of population from the farms to the cities at the turn of the century, it became necessary to mass produce and improve the quality of milk. Significant inventions such as commercial milk bottles, milking machines, tuberculin tests for cattle, pasteurization equipment, refrigerated milk tank cars, and automatic bottling machines contributed towards making milk a healthful and commercially viable product. Widespread use of the Mehring milking machine in the 1890s provided a more efficient milking method for the farmer and made it possible to produce a cleaner milk product. Shown here is a farmer operating the Mehring milking machine, York Roads, Maryland, in 1908.

Nurse prescribing regulations, Part I Regulations need to be less restrictive By Christopher Guadagnino, Ph.D Published September 2000 Melinda Jenkins, Ph.D., CRNP, is co-coordinator of the Alliance of Advanced Practice Nurses and assistant professor of Primary Care at the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania. PND: What is the status of the nurse prescribing regulations jointly promulgated by the Pa. Boards of Medicine and Nursing? MJ: PND: Why do advanced practice nurses oppose the regulations? MJ: PND: Would the regulations prohibit those sorts of collaborations? MJ: PND: Were you surprised that the Board of Nursing adopted these changes? MJ: We lobbied the Board of Nursing with our points many times. I believe they were facing great political pressure from the administration to move these revisions, which were certainly not in the best interest of nurse practitioners.

http://www.phlf.org/phlfnews/mediaclips/1998/9806282tr.html
Education Department's regulations `encourage' expensive new buildings Dennis Barbagello : Capitol reporter for the Tribune-Review. HARRISBURG - When it comes to educating Pennsylvania's children, absolutely nothing is too good for architects, planning engineers, building contractors, structural demolition experts, land title transfer agents, school district superintendents and bond lawyers. All have vested interests in needlessly replacing older school buildings with expensive new structures, a coalition of preservationists alleged last week. And they may even be part of a disorganized conspiracy to bilk taxpayers in most, if not all, 501 Pennsylvania public school districts out of potentially hundreds of millions of dollars yearly. Since each, except school superintendents, is paid a percentage of the total project price, they also have individual and collective professional interests in keeping the cost as high as possible. And it's all being done with the blessing and possible encouragement of Pennsylvania's Department of Education.
