LSS and Partners Establish New Resource Center to Empower Parents
The Consortium for Parent Information and Education (CPIE) recently held its first annual outdoor Parent Resource Fair, September 6, 2003, under sunny skies on the Main Campus of Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The kick-off fair served as the official introduction of CPIE and the unveiling of its new Web site ( http://www.temple.edu/lss/cpie ) to the public. CPIE is an organization dedicated to empowering parental decisionmaking by providing parents with the information they need to effectively guide their children's education. CPIE is a collaboration of the Laboratory for Student Success (LSS), the School District of Philadelphia, The Philadelphia Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO), and the Pennsylvania Parent Information Resource Center (PA PIRC). Paul G. Vallas, CEO, School District of Philadelphia, opened the ceremonies and welcomed participants, who had access to a variety of educational and service agency information. Representatives from over 40 vendors and guest presenters offered an array of information.

This page contains links to resources that parents' can use for tips from baby sitting to child abduction. Let me know what you think about this page and its usefulness. Some tips from the Allegheny County Health Department Injury Prevention Program:
  • Know where your children are, what they are doing and enforce the laws. Question your children as to where they are going to or coming from, and make sure they are with the right crowd. Know who influences your children and who or what your children respects. Communicate openly with your children, include them in your life, and do things with them. Involve your children in church, school, cultural, and recreational activities - keep them busy! Establish rules, responsibilities, and duties within the home. Reinventing Education in Pennsylvania
A new assessment of the state of education in Pennsylvania Written for the Commonwealth Foundation for Public Policy Alternatives, Harrisburg, Pa. Pennsylvanians spent $9,830 per pupil on public schooling in 2000-01, and public school teachers there currently enjoy the highest salaries (when adjusted for cost-of-living) in the nation, at nearly $55,000 per year. Yet, the verbal and mathematics SAT scores for the 71 percent of Pennsylvanian high-school seniors who take the SAT are below the average for the nation — ranking 45th among the 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Environmental Education Newsletter Now Available for Teachers, Parents and Students White works to preserve funding of Slippery Rock-based Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education. Harrisburg – Information to help teachers and parents educate students about the environment is available from the Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education, said state Sen. Mary Jo White (R-21), who is working to preserve funding of the center. Based at Slippery Rock University, the Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education makes learning tools available to teachers, home-school parents and students, said White, who chairs the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. White said the center's latest "EE Connections" newsletter is available online. Highlighted in the newsletter are: Finding and Choosing Environmental Education Materials, new resources on biodiversity, invasive species, integrated pest management and a new "Wade Into Watersheds" program. "The Pennsylvania Center for Environmental Education is a statewide resource for environmental education materials, with a special emphasis on Internet resources," said White. "The center was established to provide increased public and private access to a balanced environmental education. Protecting the environment is our responsibility as citizens, and educating ourselves is crucial in meeting that responsibility."

Daily activities to help prepare your child to take a test:

  • Provide a quiet and comfortable study place for your child.
  • Encourage your child to make a commitment to do well in school and set goals. Support the commitment.
Math tips:

  • Talk money. Many children receive an allowance. If your child does, ask him or her how much the allowance would be next year with a 5% increase. Talk with your teens about ways to save money for college, a car or other major purchase items. Discuss your daily expenses like rent, mortgage, utilities, car payments, groceries and clothes. Your child can make a chart and discuss ways to save money in each area.
Practice using a calculator. Many standardized tests, including different sections of the PSSA, allow the use of calculators. Encourage your child to practice with the calculator before the test.
Reading tips:
  • Encourage your child to build his or her own library. Children love to collect stuffed animals, comic books, autographs and baseball cards, so why not promote collecting books! A personal library will introduce your child to a world of resources. If possible, include a visit to a local bookstore during a shopping trip. Provide your child with magazines about his or her individual interests. Magazines are available for children of all ages and all areas of interest. Younger children can learn basic skills from magazines, and older children can read about current events and get other information. Talk to your child about the magazines and articles he or she reads.

A Resource Guide of Best Practices for Pregnant and Parenting Teen Programs
Resources Introduction Coordination of school, community, statewide and national resources is vital to address the complex issues and needs of pregnant and parenting teens. Collaborations, referrals and coordination with available community resources promote mutual participation and provide a continuum of services while avoiding competition with or duplication of existing services and programs. When community agencies work together the ultimate result is a decreased need for financial support from the government. It is important to educate teen parents about the resources that are available to them and how they can access these services as a means to self-sufficiency, responsibility and employment. Identifying Resources Agencies and Organizations
In every community, there are varied agencies and professional organizations that provide programs, services, funding and expertise that can be used to enhance services for pregnant and parenting teens. Identifying resources specific to the needs of a local program can be done through many sources. Some of them include:
